My father immigrated to the U.S. From Italy when he was 16. He shared all his favorite music with me, Domenico Modugno and Claudio villa (Luna rosa) were two of his favorite. I can hardly keep a dry eye when I think about his last days with lung cancer. He would whistle this song even with lung cancer and copd, as the sickness progressed his whistle was reduced to a barely audible whisper. I would hide myself in another room to cry. Thank you Daddy! @museack It's about being a nation. Hard to understand if you are from some place that is just a country and not a nation. Doesn't matter where you were born, if you are Italian YOU ARE ITALIAN. While in those countries without identity, mainly in the Americas, they just have a country, but not a group of people that understand each other and make up a nation, race and culture with an identity. We all have to do with it, it's our race. Now, if you talk about the Italian State, country, etc. That doesn't really matter. Same you could say about the Jews for example.

It came 2nd songs of all time at the "Congratulations: 50 Years of the Eurovision Song Contest" show in the 2005! Right after Waterloo, which won in 1974, the same edition which the Italian singer Gigliola Cinquetti came 2nd.
You know what? In the Italian wikipedia page of this song there's not even mention to the Eurovision facts, neither that it's the most covered ESC song.

my mother was agonizing, barely conscious, when a friend of her came to visit her and started singing volare. my mom woke up for a while and smiled, made an effort to sing, which she couldnt of course, and all the family joined singing. these were the sweetest, saddest and at the same time, the happiest moments we had with her. she died exaclty 2 years ago. everytime i hear this song my face is covered by tears and a smile, and my heart is full of love and gratitude.

Italian is the most beautiful language for me to hear. The way the words are pronounced, the way they use their gesture to accentuate the meaning. I am always in awe when I hear my friend from Milan(Lombrata) have conversations with his mother. Just an incredible language that has many dialects but has been preserved for so long.

Bellissimo! Ricordo quando avevo 6 anni e guidavo su una station wagon Mercury del 1957 su una superstrada di Los Angeles. Questa canzone è arrivata sull'autoradio. Non l'ho capito ma l'ho adorato. È ancora un ricco ricordo per me. Ho 68 anni e adoro ancora questa canzone. È stata la mia prima introduzione al mio amore per la lingua e la cultura italiana.

My mom and I both play accordion, or she did when she was in full health. I'm learning this song for her now to help bring back her memory of her time as a young child in her Sicilian grandmother's house. All my best to you. I picked it everytime on the juke box for my dad and for me...we loved this song even tho we didnt know what he was saying! I wanted to grow up and marry an Italian and I almost did.

1958 and one day my dad came home with the 45 of Volare. I had two older brothers and two sisters, but my dad gave the 45 to me. Twenty one years later I married a wonderful Italian girl in Italy. Go figure!
I was happily in a relationship with a wonderful Italian man, a pretty little younger gal who came from big bucks came to work where we both worked and altho it took her a year, she did steal him away...altho he came to me several times to say he would marry me as he loved me..we did see each other several times ...but in the end I lost all trust...so I gave him my blessing and moved on and they are still married to this day.
