Grindelwald didn't even have to manipulate people cuz they were already thinking and feeling deeply about these things already for a long time, he was the only one bold enough to speak out about it, if not him then someone else will, they just want to live freely and being oppressed and suffocating to death is no life at all, with his legendary skills, elder wand and devoted followers the dream can become a reality and the impossible can be accomplished , they just want to live the life they crave and desire deeply in their own hearts and minds , it's awe inspiring and empowering to see someone of your own race leading the world being able to help achieve the dream
This comment section confirms for me that Grindelwald was a better Dark Lord than Voldemort. He's extremely charismatic. He got people to follow him because they loved(for lack of a better term) him. That's how he managed to take over so much of Europe. Whereas Voldemort's rain of terror stayed for the most part in the UK.
Lord Voldemort had travelled the world and had followers all over the Globe. If Lord Voldemort was to take the UK; he 1st must take Hogwarts and the rest of the world would soon fall to him. He was a worldwide threat. Remember he went travelling after leaving his job and killing Mrs Smith.

There could've been other civil wars in other countries during the 1970s like France and Germany, and other effects of a Wizarding Cold War from Voldemort or other dark or social threats. Even though Voldemort was British and went home (like Hitler taking Germany over), if the UK fell to any dark lord Voldemort or Grindelwald then the world would fall. Britain's victory in WWII was paramount for this reason.
