I think that obsession with will they won’t they romance in modern fiction might be part of why modern dating is so screwed up. Kids learn a lot about what romance should look like from stories, since most of the relationships the observe in real life are already well underway. The hot and cold trope undercuts men’s hope that admitting interest might result in something positive and tells women they need to be incredibly subtle if they don’t want to come off desperate. But relationships like this, where it seems so steady, so sure, these are the romances I wish shows of my youth actually did.
That's how my wife and I were when we met. No melodrama, no cliffhangers, just two people looking for a serious and positive relationship and we happened to have a lot of the same goals for having a family. It just clicked. No cliffhangers or filler episodes, just straight to the punchline.
I hate that. We generally never got to see them get together properly, or see the relationship unfold. So we never saw a sustainable relationship. I also hate when characters get together right at the end of a season after all the drama, they when the next season starts, some time has passed and they break up right on episode 1 or have broken up off screen. All the relationship and good times were offscreen so we never got the pay-off for withstanding all the drama
Sometimes, the best things come in unexpected ways. Who’d have expected someone as paranoid as Question and someone as distrustful as Huntress to end up together and actually make it work? That scene with them in the that hospital room is my favorite scene between them.

His character was perfectly done, from the voice casting to his overall casual handling of his investigations. Like when he’s investigating Supergirl’s clone and he’s singing as he loudly breaks into the lab 😂
Question is one of those characters that doesn't seem to work on his own; his solo series hardly ever lasts all that long, and he's never had any series outside of comics dedicated to him (as far as I know), but that's alright because Question shines in another way. When Question has someone to bounce off of, that's where he really shows his worth in a story; he needs other people to make him work in the best ways possible. Question works best when he has others to work with, which is interesting when you think about it. You would think his archetype would be best set up as that type that works alone and goes off to do his own thing, but he usually works best when it's the opposite; having others to work with makes Vic work as a character better than having him work alone. And having Huntress as the one he bounces off of most, at least in the DCAU, works surprisingly well, primarily because of how their personalities are established within the framework of the DCAU, but I think that could still be the case if they were to get incarnations side by side in some other continuity.

JLU really was such a special show. The attention to themes, dynamics and plot threads in wonderful. The amount of things I didn't catch onto as a kid cuz I was just enjoying a real feeling world of superheroes with cool action and characters that I get to learn about now that I'm older is awesome. Characters that are obscure being given time in the spotlight, creating some of my favorite ships lol and still has me wanting more after all these years is something I was I saw more of. Idk of any series that feels like it has as much depth as this show has.
I wish this couple appeared more in the continuity outside of the show. They really balance each other out, Question balances out the violent side of Huntress with his inability to take things at face value and Huntress balances out his paranoia and self doubt with her own sardonic style of speaking.
Question/Huntress might be my favorite thing ever from this show... and this show is one of my favorite shows ever. Thank you for shining the spotlight on this.
"Her love is so great that she convinces a God to break into Hell to save her man." Loved this reference to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. I like this couple and Double Date is indeed one of my favorite episodes.
I actually kind of dig how Huntress takes a passive interest, but never derides it. She seems to respect his intuition, even if it seems absurd. And to be fair, Question is not always wrong. Eccentric, yes, but in a world where people can run faster than time and out of dimension, where a man of Steel can fly beyond to the edge of space, gods and devils alike roam your planet, multidimensional travel....is anything really crazy if you can link it accurately? After all...."I do my homework." It's a good line for The Question, the hero who lacks powers, and definitely a budget like Batman....but his Detective skills can always rival Bats. The only reason he isn't smarter is because he sees ALL the small details, which can distract. That all said, JLU did a wonderful job throwing some bones to the less-popular heroes.
Man,its so nice to find someone who can appreciate the beauty of this series. The details you go through is truly remarkable. Specially the pairing of characters, this was so well thought out in the DCAU.
That Birds of Prey episode idea sounds great, but this was also a great episode. I don't know how a situation can be both lose-lose AND win-win, but I think that's what I'm looking at. Question & Huntress are a surprisingly good couple, which is something I say about basically every DCU pairing except You Know The One. In fairness, without all of those bruises, Question probably wouldn't look half-bad. But I can buy that he'd be secretly insecure. Looking forward to his episode.
Vic Sage, Question's real name, is a TV personality. He's not ugly, and he knows he's not ugly. Pretty sure calling himself that was actually not done in seriousness :)
I would love it if you talked about Tom Taylor's Nightwing run as well as Dick's relationship with Barbara which is honestly my favourite. I know a lot of people like to argue about whether or not Dick should be with Barbara or Kory but personally I definitely prefer Barbara. One of the many reasons I love Nightwing as much as I do is because unlike Batman he is able to have stable and healthy relationships which is why both the one with Kory and Barbara are great in their own ways but personally I much prefer him with Barbara.
If Question and Huntress decide to get married, they will probably toss a coin. Heads, they will go to Chicago, and get married on The Jerry Springer Show, by Reverend Schoor. Tails, they will go to Las Vegas and get hitched in a wedding chapel, by an Ordained Elvis.
Out of the many genius moments in this ep (what happened to Simone's writing eventually??), I never noticed until now just _how_ hard Huntress goes trying to flirt with Question to get help in their first meeting. Cross that leg, nope the other way; stroke the underside of that bolt in the wall! Yeesh, lolol! "Okay, bored now."
This episode is the reason huntress is my favorite super heroine, if weren’t for this episode it would probably be black canary or Hawk girl, but this episode alone stuck with me ever since I was a kid

For me, Question was very similar to Rorschach. But, without the psychopath part. And his appearence in the animatied series, reflected a time where conspiracies were becoming more maintream (through the internet). The Huntress-Question story was so good. And, like many good things, was a stroke of luck. And having Jeffery Combs do the character, the icing on the cake :)
I watched the show as a kid and I had no idea about this ship. Love it! I wish DC would make movies on the superheroes I'm so over the other ones at this point.
Fun fact the question and huntress episode was originally meant to be a birds of prey episode with batgirl, huntress and black canary teaming up in it. But the bat embargo of the 2000s meant batgirl couldn’t be in it and so it was changed to a question huntress team up (likely inspired by the comic batman/ huntress cry for blood) Edit: well damn. Should have watched the full video
Man you made me smile and cry. This has been my ship in the whole serie and seeing this analysis was the best thing you could have done. They are still my favorite couple when it comes to superheroes and I dreamed to find someone who looks at me and tells me that I'm not the ugliest guy in their eyes. Also finding Question comcis had been a pain for me!
They are perfect example of great characterization with romance. Even though we only had one or two episodes with them together, each time made us as the viewers want to see more of them. It’s a shame we didn’t but I’m glad of what we got.
Didn't know about the embargo, it makes more awesome to know JLU got away with it in some episodes, I remember that in "Grudgematch" Huntress goes to Bludhaven and they show Nightwing silhouette watching from a rooftop
I love this pairing because it felt very real how they took a little bit to get to know each other, and shortly after decided to date, only for their relationship to grow more and more.
dude this is like a prime example of what a generic video essay is, an overanalyzation of a cartoon episode with citings from research papers sliced into pretentious commentary and i actually love it bro 😂
A lot of people don't seem to know this, but Question and Huntress as a pairing actually wasn't originally from JLU and does have a comic basis! It's from a miniseries called Batman/Huntress: Cry for Blood! In the comic, they go through a similar arc as Double Date, where Question finds Huntress at the lowest point in her life after being expelled from the Batfamily. They fall in love as he makes her reconsider killing in revenge, just like in the show. Sadly, they break up at the end, but their time together is still referenced later on when Huntress meets the second Question! (Also Green Arrow showing up in the episode is relevant since he and Question teamed up a bunch in the '80s.)
I went to a comic convention (Not sure if it was LA Comic con or San Diego comic con) one time. There was a marvel anniversary panel, they were announcing the guest speakers( no one very famous but they all got respectful claps) and when Gail Simone popped up it was silent. They had to reintroduce her a 2nd time and still no claps afterwards the guy with the mic asked the crowd to clap for her. They moved on eventually when they were able to get a 3rd of the crowd to applaud for her. Random but whenever Gail Simones name pops up I think of that awkward moment.
I always wish they had more of Q dealing with internal affairs, imagine if they had a running gag of him preventing crazy conspiracy’s and nobody believing him, it writes itself.
This is weirdly one of the JLU episodes I can vividly remember, it might seem insignificant in terms of the overarching plot, but it was touching and I guess it really resonated with me
Bravo! Bravo! A supreme masterpiece! Hopefully, a decent producer will see this video and it will inspire them to make a fantastic live action series...
Looking forward to that Question video as I read through the O'Neil run! Would also be cool if you looked at the evolution of his character from Ditiko to O'Neil to JLU (Always thought of the JLU version as mix between the O'Neil and JLU version)

Aside from that, they NAILED the casting for Helena in this. Amy Acker, who's always great. Is FANTASTIC as Helena.
was a good writer, now twitter hellscape
and even then strong armed DC by social media mob to keep working when they shouldn't of
Plus it’s kind of fun for Buffy and Firefly fans to see Fred fighting Inara.
@@magnusprime962 I UNDERSTOOD THAT REFERENCE!
This channel is SOOO UNDER RATED!!! Can't wait for you to blow up like you deserve
I wish this couple appeared more in the continuity outside of the show. They really balance each other out, Question balances out the violent side of Huntress with his inability to take things at face value and Huntress balances out his paranoia and self doubt with her own sardonic style of speaking.
I loved their relationship so much.
The whole thing with The Question in the JLU was what made him my top favorite hero in the series.
Im *super* excited to see the Question video!
Question/Huntress might be my favorite thing ever from this show... and this show is one of my favorite shows ever.
Thank you for shining the spotlight on this.
"Her love is so great that she convinces a God to break into Hell to save her man."
Loved this reference to the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.
This is everything I've been waiting for from this channel: Question content.
SAME
Man,its so nice to find someone who can appreciate the beauty of this series. The details you go through is truly remarkable. Specially the pairing of characters, this was so well thought out in the DCAU.
I love question, the second he said "please, I go through everyone's trash" he was my favorite character
I'm so glad you talked about them! Honestly one of my favorite JLU ships.
This is the DCAU shipping content I subbed for
I would love it if you talked about Tom Taylor's Nightwing run as well as Dick's relationship with Barbara which is honestly my favourite.
Sorry to tell you but that run is mid
@@kaine8911 Sorry you feel that way.
@Kaine it's fun but it does rely a lot on nostalgia and feel good moments and cameos
_Why_ do you prefer Barbara though?
I love Tom Taylor's run so much! His writing and Bruno's artwork I feel best captures Dick's kindness and competence
Imagine an HBO style The question series based on the Denis O'Neil run. It can be set in the 80s too ffs.
I remember watching this episode as a kid and loving every time they came back
Out of the many genius moments in this ep (what happened to Simone's writing eventually??), I never noticed until now just _how_ hard Huntress goes trying to flirt with Question to get help in their first meeting. Cross that leg, nope the other way; stroke the underside of that bolt in the wall! Yeesh, lolol! "Okay, bored now."
Putting Lacan into an understandable format, incredible!!!
These two were just magic together. Solid as always, thanks! 👍
This episode is the reason huntress is my favorite super heroine, if weren’t for this episode it would probably be black canary or Hawk girl, but this episode alone stuck with me ever since I was a kid
For those of you looking for Music details.

Wow, this video is totally a slightly belated birthday present to me. Looking forward to the Q-centered video coming up. You're spectacular at this!
Rorschach was based on the Question, so it’s only natural for the two to be similar
Rorschach is technically not a psychopath. He was just a tragic and broken man, obsessed with his moral code, which got him killed.
Jeffery Combs and Morena bacarrin as the voice actors was stroke of brilliance. Star Trek and Firefly in this couple.
Excellent choice, this episode was fanfastic and easily one of the best pairings I've ever seen.
Love them together.
One of the best animated couples ever made
I watched the show as a kid and I had no idea about this ship. Love it! I wish DC would make movies on the superheroes I'm so over the other ones at this point.
Love this pairing. I cannot wait to see your mercy graves video after the work you did on bullock
He was the Question, but then became her answer
Fun fact the question and huntress episode was originally meant to be a birds of prey episode with batgirl, huntress and black canary teaming up in it. But the bat embargo of the 2000s meant batgirl couldn’t be in it and so it was changed to a question huntress team up (likely inspired by the comic batman/ huntress cry for blood)
Edit: well damn. Should have watched the full video
One of my favorite videos, thank you for showing me great DC stories.
Man you made me smile and cry. This has been my ship in the whole serie and seeing this analysis was the best thing you could have done. They are still my favorite couple when it comes to superheroes and I dreamed to find someone who looks at me and tells me that I'm not the ugliest guy in their eyes. Also finding Question comcis had been a pain for me!
i love these two so much.
Just startin this one up, hope Trauma-man included the bit where Question is singing that pop song as he breaks into Cadmus.
This video is Actually Goated
Hilarious that Huntress's dad is god damn Tony Montoya.
Ur output is so good and the quality isn’t sacrificed because of it,I appreciate that very much
I was hoping you talked about them!!! Thanks to JLU the question became one of my fav dc characters
God I love the intro song so much
Damn he got to know huntress and went 'i can fix her'
They are perfect example of great characterization with romance.
Question is definitely my favorite character from this show.
Man you just put into words the things I've felt that made me resonate with these two, that was awesome analysis, this show was amazing
I love this pairing because it felt very real how they took a little bit to get to know each other, and shortly after decided to date, only for their relationship to grow more and more.
Question/Huntress ship is the best. Also love the line Lex delivers about power when he confronts him
dude this is like a prime example of what a generic video essay is, an overanalyzation of a cartoon episode with citings from research papers sliced into pretentious commentary
and i actually love it bro 😂
I went to a comic convention
(Not sure if it was LA Comic con or San Diego comic con) one time.
This is weirdly one of the JLU episodes I can vividly remember, it might seem insignificant in terms of the overarching plot, but it was touching and I guess it really resonated with me
I freaking LOVE this show
Bravo! Bravo!
A supreme masterpiece!
Hopefully, a decent producer will see this video and it will inspire them to make a fantastic live action series...
thank you for spotlighting one of my favorite ships
Looking forward to that Question video as I read through the O'Neil run!
Would also be cool if you looked at the evolution of his character from Ditiko to O'Neil to JLU (Always thought of the JLU version as mix between the O'Neil and JLU version)
