  • Picture Bride - movie 1994. Working as a Marketing Management Trainee for Toyota Hawaii, my task was to deliver a Toyota T100 truck to the filming location on the North Shore of Oahu. Lead Actor, Akira Takayama, never seen this truck before (a full size Toyota pickup truck). T100 was a U.S. model only. We talked breifly about the T100 truck, and other (U.S.) Toyota products. He then asked me to be an extra in the movie. Sure. My boss also allowed me to be there, off work, for 4 days. I guess that was work, marketing..

I watched Picture Bride when I lived in Hawaii in the late 90s. Before that I lived in Tokyo for three years.
I've forgotten about this movie but these short clips bring back fond memories. It's a charming movie, a small piece of history.
I also read "Hawaii" by James Michener, a very recommendable book, which also gives insights into the Chinese and Japanese imported labor, which shaped this state.

I bought the DVD on Amazon (because I was an "extra" in the movie.) There are other clips posted by others on TH-cam.

I'm trying to find a movie for my friend. The movie was set on a farm on an island off the coast of Washington state. A Japanese/American family hired a farm hand to work for them. The hand ended up having an affair with the farmer's wife. He entertained the 2 kids by doing such things as listening to a radio station on his comb. I believe this film came out around 1970.
