This brings back the memories when King Street and South Shields Market had life, today it's tragically desolate. I wonder if the people in this video would be horrified if they were shown a video of what has happened to the once heart of south Shields,
I came from the yemen in1977and lived in south shields for 20 years and worked away from there . i always look at the videos and pictures to chear me up . Thanks for the videos.
very fond memories of the mid late 80s as a teenager and 10p on the bus from Sunderland got me into South shields to the beach and fair. got very vivid memories of Jason Donovan blasting out too many broken hearts. got to say, me and my brother go up north as often as we can and I love South shields it is beautiful the coastline and beaches are incredible and the walks along the leas spectacular.
I was born in 1991 i think i just caught the tail end of the good days of Shields I’m watching this now thinking i just wish so bad that i could go back to those times even just for one day but sadly i never will be able to damn if only thank you for the footage my friend
I remember my mum and dad and extended family members taking me through king Street on a Saturday day out to the beach. Only time I ever got to know my dad as he was joyful in those moments.
This was my old stomping ground as the founder of South Shields Market skins (nutty boys) we all wore crombies and trilby hats, with black sta-prest and fred perry's. Best days of my life :) :) :)
I agree. I left in 1979, and returned 5 years ago. I was shocked, it’s a ghost town, so sad. Look at the people in the Market! I got my first Saturday job there in ‘73 selling shoes, it’s like a Jumble sale now.
The gooseneck crane in the middle docks brings back memories I used to work there and Smiths dock over the river I was probably on that navy boat docked. Its a shame the council ruined the town centre most of the shops are empty now. 10/8/2020
My home town..South Shields..a market town with an impressive market that brought hundreds of people three times a week...good for coffee shops, restaurants, pubs, and other business,s....killing the market killed the Town.sadley .it's no longer a Market Town...
i was married 1st august 1987 (Saturday) that means this video was shot on a Monday! i think you'd be hard pressed to get this amount of people on a Saturday in august nowadays
Yes Sir J hall has a lot to answer for with his Metro Center, I think I heard somewhere the number of jobs created was = to number of jobs lost in Newcastle. Progress not.
It's a shame the town centre is now just full of junkies and alcoholics ....it once was an amazing town ...10 years time I dread to think what it'll be like it's so sad ....

Was 7 months old at this point and this still makes me feel old...my kids would look at this like i look at something from the 1940s 😂

It looks like the Yemen now.
Lucky for some
It looks so busy! Really puts into perspective how down hill it's gone
I've worked away from Shields for the last 12 yrs now and always look at old videos and pictures to cheer me up. It'll always be home. Great video
I was 12 in 1987 and was a 'Shields lad at the time. Amazing to see King Street so busy :-D

Thriving, complete ghost town and dump now!
How completely terrifying would it have been to you to know this is still the case nearly a decade later?
