What it means if you have a Flashing check engine light "Catalyst Damaging Misfire"

- In this video I will go over and what it means if you have a flashing check engine light. And typically with a flashing check engine light it means you have a catalyst damaging misfire.
I was working on a Toyota 4Runner in this video and removed and inspected the ignition coil. The computer was setting a P0304 for a cylinder 4 misfire. But any cylinder misfire can cause a flashing check engine light.
If you have any tracking flashing check engine light you should definitely get it repaired immediately due to the damage it can cause to your catalytic converter. And that is because the unburnt fuel is going into your exhaust system. Which can cause your catalytic converter to overheat and be ruined or damaged. A flashing check engine light is typically usually relatively inexpensive repair though. Most commonly involving spark plugs and or a bad ignition coil. Its not always that, i redid all spark plus and wires and ingition coil so its something fuel like a fuel pump or fuel injector. Shouldve said that

Just to let you all know, there was a silver lining in my 2 year search and part replacefor my 2005 GMC savana v8. Replaced all coils ,plugs and wires but heard on TH-cam, to check and have the mechanic perform ,for code P0300, a crankshaft calibration/relearn procedure. It's essential and a low cost fix for high mileage vand and trucks. GMC is plagued with it . Check it before performing all the expensive services first.
Mine started flashing and so i connected a code reader to the OBD-II port and it showed up with no codes. It flashed for a about a minute yesterday and hasnt flashed since

My 2003 Ranger started doing this. For me, the light came on a week ago, but started running rough at a stop...then it started flashing. Runs fine, except at idle (stopped).

@@anthonyc1304 that's a misfire caused by valve problems man. Pretty common on ford rangers because they used cheap valves on the 3.0L motor.

Yes it will do it much more under load. That is normal for a cylinder misfire.

For me it was something like "intake manifold gasket" where the coolant was getting into the cylinder and misfiring real bad. It'd also smoke on cold start and sputter at idle

The misfire on my van scared the shit out of me. I'm not sure whether to junk the van or fix it. On one hand, it's a really reliable, fun van, but on the other hand, I have three cars to work on and it's starting to rust out underneath.

Thank man I was driving my dodge van 3500 and the engine light was flashing I pulled over then I turn the van off & 2 minutes later I turn it on and it was driving fine so it could be missed fire because the only thing pop up was emission p0455 that it so it have to be miss fire ????

With a Defective coil , I change all plugs and coils as a set .
What if you replace the misfiring ignition coil and spark plug and it doesn’t solve the problem? The flashing engine light still persists. Sigh

Isn't a cat problem related to a o2 sensor not switching from 1v to .5v flashing means imminent damage due to running lean and getting no closed loop reading I though

My Check Engine Light began flashing. I pulled over and immediately had it towed to a mechanic they replaced all the plugs and ignition coils. So I picked it up today and even though the check engine light is not on it feels a little shakey during travel? 2013 Ford F150 v6
Mallery Smith maybe they did a bad job in replacing the parts. Could also be something to do with air intake to the car
@@alexis_dc2 Bad mechanic is exactly what it was. When they installed new plugs they cracked one and sent me home in it. Ugh. Ended up costing me more to get it diagnosed because I told then the plugs and coils shouldn't be the issue since they were supposivly replaced 🙃 Got the bad plug replaced...truck feels much better now. Check for vacuum leaks or check the fuel injectors for the #6 cylinder
I had a flashing check engine light yesterday when I went to start my car. I freaked out and turned it off and I turned it back on haha it was gone once I restarted the car. It drives perfectly fine. I didn't feel the car running sluggish or anything out of the ordinary. I went to O Reilly and the reader didn't get anything. my dad replaced the spark plugs a couple of months ago when he changed the serpentine belt so it can't be that. Should I have a mechanic give the car a look over just to be safe? The car is a 99 dodge intrepid. It's only got 63k original miles and I had the oil changed a few weeks ago too. Idk how soon a mechanic could look at it tho and I'm a little sketched out about taking my car right now cause I feel like mechanics are gonna take advantage of customers cause it's tax return season and we just received our stimulus checks 😐

I’m experiencing the same problem. Mines actually happened yesterday. Once I turned my car on it started peeping and after I shut it off 20min later it stopped. I drove it a little today but it’s driving funny, it’s also shaking alot! What should I do? How much is it usually to fix this type of problem? I also have a bad Axel ..
It's usually a relatively inexpensive repair. You would have to first start by getting the codes read from your computer. A lot of places like AutoZone will read the codes for you for free. Once you find out what cylinder is misfiring then I can suggest course of action

Once fixed does a check engine light turn off right away or it takes time.
It can be cleared or you will have to drive it with no problem for a little bit and it will clear itself as long as the problem was fixed.

Normally that is what you would do and my wife's 2007 Nissan Altima I've already changed the coil packs and spark plugs and I did not want to have to take that car apart again I just changed them a couple months ago so it's got to be something else it's definitely misfiring no doubt but I don't think it's from bad spark plugs or coil pack, I did have it running and I pulled the airbox off and it seemed like it got a little pep in it step so I think it might have something to do with not getting enough air but if I plug in OBD sensor up it's not going to tell me that all it's going to say is I got lean air and gas mixture. Do they make OBD sensors that tell you exactly what the hell the problem is because that would be great I would buy one of those in a heartbeat

i have the same problem with my 2014 Hyundai Veloster turbo i change the plugs but that wasn't the case and i am still getting p0300 codes so i order 4 packs of brand new ignition coils and wiring harness off amazon I'm a hundred percent sure that its time to changed them thank you for video two thumbs up

How to count cylinders, from left to right? Left one being first?
The firing order is diferrent for most cars. A quick google seach will tell the the firing order of yours.

What about a car that’s sat for 30 days? All I did was replace a factory battery and now it has an intermittent miss and a flashing check engine light that flashed about 10 times then stopped. Bad gas?
On a car that has been sitting, I would still suspect an ignition coil or spark plug wires. Depending on the type of ignition system it has. Moisture likes to build up in the spark plug tubes on and engine that has not been run for some time and the moisture can cause a misfire. Water and electricity do not mix. I would scan it for codes and spray the plug wire or coil of the effected cylinder with WD40 and see if the misfire goes away.

2006 Highlander, 3.3 V6 maintenance light now stays on. Engine runs perfectly fine and no codes. What is the problem? Two mechanics say it’s the computer.
Maintenance light or check engine light? It is possible for the clusters go bad because of age I know Toyota’s you have to turn off the vehicle, hold down the bottom on the cluster and turn it back on the on position for the maintenance light to go away I’ve seen many oil change places that don’t even do that right haha it’s really easy it takes less than 2 mins to do it.
I have a 14 year old 2005 chevy 2500 6.0 With 4500 miles on it. Yes 4500 miles. I just bought it 300 mile age. Truck runs great but I just started getting a PO307 code. Misfire on 7. So I changed #5 coil with #7 and It still gets the same code PO307. I'm thinking clogged injector on 7 from sitting for a long time or bad gas.. Sometimes check engine light blinks and say on. I put some Seafoam in the tanks and now check engine light blinks but doesn't stay on and just stops blinking. It started when I filled the tank with gas, so maybe bad gas. Some time when it flashes I can here a back fire. I'm going to try some more Injector cleaner in the tank. What do you think. Thanks
I fixed it. Took out the injectors and cleaned them.

Sounds like it was misfiring, unfortunately if it didn't set a code it would be hard to track down unless it is misfiring at the time of diagnostic. What kinda of car is it.

Yes you can burn your valves if you do not have any catalytic converters. I cut my muffler and my third cat off but have the two main cats on still

@@CanadianLag one thing. Why the hell are you flooring it? That's bad for you engine right there. If it misfires it a back fire. That means left over exhaust fumes are rushing out of the tale pipe.

I wouldn't worry about it but the computer will have a stored code even if the light when out. Probably got a coil going bad.

That’s GM for you, but then again, my 2008 Dodge 1500 has a check engine light with no codes, so I guess I’ll just reset it. Doesn’t even feel like there’s anything wrong. Checked all plugs, connections, cleaned mass airflow sensor, checked all fluids, and still drives and runs fine. Hopefully just a false reading somewhere in the system...

renault clio mk3 1.4 16v petrol 2006-flashing emmissions light only when car idling--------scan reads all the time misfire cyclinder-3-----4 mechanics at 4 differant garages cant find what is causing it carried out same test as you with new plugs and coil---put numerous gaskets on as differant ones thought it was vacum problem-changed fuel rail-throttle body 4 pencil coils new ngk plugs and ran scan on big garage diagnostic machine-misfire cyclinder 3-no other info-costing me a lot of cash for parts that appear not to have been needed-i mentioned cat as car seems little smokey( car driving 100% but wont pass mot test in uk with this problem)-they all dismissed this any help welcome thanks in advance
If it's only at idle I would suspect a vacuum leak or a burt valve in the cylinder head.

If there aren’t any major issues, just keep driving it! Trucks will last a long time! I have a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 with 325,000 miles, and just had the check engine light come on for the first time! Still all original drivetrain, and running great! Hopefully just a bad sensor!

I had this with my old honda civic. The car would start violently shaking and almost stall. I kept driving it and eventuallly it started running fine again lol. Check engine light was still on but the car just stopped giving me problems with stalling. Didn't change the plugs nothing.
