I cannot over state just how powerful Floor's voice is in person, it's simply jaw dropping to hear her in full flow in person
As someone who recently had the opportunity to do just that: can confirm.
Tuomas, the keyboardist/songwriter, said about this song Storytime, that when he came up with the chorus he knew right away, that's it, a moment of gratification!
It takes him about 18 months to write songs for an album. He challenges every part of every song, trying to make them better. He then introduces his demoversions of the new songs for the band, including the vocal lines, and then they start rehearsing to make the songs even better. Conserning the latest Nightwish albjm, Floor asked Tuomas about certain songs: Where do I breath? Tuomas: "You'll figure that out"!
Usually it's recommend not to react to Nightwish - The Poet and the Pendulum, Wembley Arena 2015, until you know Nightwish better, but I can't wait for you to react to that one. A 14 minute in five parts, a masterpiece - composition, arrangement, vocals. Very personal song for Tuomas. Will propably never be performed again. The usual adviced is to find out about the story bihind the song. It is about the aftermath of firing the original female vocalist of Nightwish.
I recommed you watch Nightwish Making of New Album Episode 8. Nightwish members visiting Angel Studios in London, where the sinfonic backing tracs of Nightwish songs are recorded. The album is Endless Forms Most Beautiful, influenced by science, evolution.

A band consisting of fantastic musicians, an unmatched lead singer and a genius composer/songwriter (Tuomas Holopainen, on keyboards). Their songs have a huge variety, both musically and lyrically, so I'd love to hear your opinion on more of their songs. Give the song 'Shoemaker' a try. And it is just the first song on the timeline of many operas. Oh boy, ....... I love how much you know and appreciate about this band and of course the wonderful amazing Floor. Tuomas is a true musical genius, writing all of this amazing musical soundscape. This performance at Wacken 2013 must go down as one of if not the greatest performances of all time, .... seriously. The Gift of Nightwish a Story and a Performance in Each Song.. Tuomas writes and creates the Complex Sounds, Floor and the Band makes it Look Easy when it is not. They Have Songs of Anger, Despair, Wonder, Deep Mood and Science. Try Ever Dream(Romantic), Romanticide(Anger), Song of Myself(Mindfull), Dark Chest of Wonders from (wonder) all from Wacken 2013. The Big Ones "Poet and the Pendulum" (very dark and soulful) , The Greatest Show on Earth(History) there are so Many it is a Journey of Music and Lyrics by High Talented Musicians. There Earlier Songs by "Tarja" Nemo, Phantom of the Opera, Over the Hills and far away, Bless the Child, Sleeping Sun. (Floor and Troy) (acoustical) "How's the Heart" is empathy to humanity. Where to start ? Could do floor beste zangers with shallow, fantom of the opera, or u wanna get growl, try yours is an empty hope. Beautiful folk , I want my tears back. Just beautiful, personal..wheres the heart. A Disney cover..why not her daughter loves the song, frozen. She literally can do any style of music at an incredible level.
To my mind, The poet and the pendulum is their masterpiece. It won't be performed anymore as Tuomas says he passed it and Marco is not in the band anymore. So take that opportunity to see it one more time. Did you know that Floor started her solo career besides Nightwish (pop songs because she never done that before with an emphasis on mental health). Just a few adjustments to account for Northern European pronunciation. Jansen is pronounced “Yansen”. Wacken is pronounced “Vacken”.
I've always been interested in the note-choice of the early part of the verses. A simpler approach would have relied more on the root and more common minor derivatives, but instead Floor's line seems to dance around and below 'what is expected'... Initially I thought it was an attempt to 'be complex', as if to make a statement by not doing wjat is expected... but now, I feel it might be a way to not let the lyrics/vocals get in the way of the very eerie/evolving musical soundscape that is unfolding. This pre-vocal introduction is quite straight-forward, musically, but as soon as the lyrics begin the intricacies start to unfold (chord progression and beat emphasis shifting from measure to measure). Straight ahead vocal-note-choice would not just hide the music, but it wouldn't fit the theme... 'there are stories around every corner, unfolding before your very ears'. And while the band definitely pulls back their use of the 'vocal range frequencies' to give Floor room (i.e. to decluttered the 300-800 Hz range), she ALSO dance around those same edges... to me, this leaves 'ear space' for the listener, which helps create that mysterious feel.
Anyway, this is such a fun song on so many levels.

Not the best song to highlight floors' ability. Dead boys poem at Buenos aries shows her lowest to her highest, and in between. Give it a listen..also for her operatic, stargazers at Tampere. 82,000 people here.

Why do you say "Nightwish with Floor Jansen"? It is just Nightwish.... Would be the same if people say "Nightwish with Emppu Vuorinen". Annoying to bring up only the singer. Imo.
Because it could also be: Nightwish with Tarja or Nightwish with Anette. Those youtube video's are still there and reacted to.

Oh, drummer and bass player has changed too... There are several videos where Marko and/or Jukka plays too... So just Nightwish it is. It is whole band, individuals goes not above.
*sigh* yet another song ruined by this obsessive pausing and back and forth. :( A few no-no's (not saying all of these happened in this video) Never, effing EVER pause during chorus or guitar solos.
One excuse for the pausing is to comment and/or give "expert" opinion. Fine. sure. But then stop talking during the bleeping song TOO. Make up your mind, pause and say your stuff, and then be quiet when the video is playing. OR, never pause, and respect the music by letting it *flow* .. 😕
Absolute crime to have subtitles when reacting. #1 they are wrong constantly. #2 they draw your attention away from what is happening.

Another great one for you to comment on would be "Ever Dream" from this same show. Floor has commented that it is one of the most difficult vocal challenges in the Nightwish catalog. Floor is brilliant, but it is not by accident. Even though she is classically trained, she has spent her whole life getting her instrument to where it is, and she is so good at it. This song was not written for her at all. You can tell she is holding back during the whole thing, then at the end, she can really let loose on that part that is made for having a small choir of backup singers.
Warning! If you play this version while driving, you will add 20mph to your speed. If you want Drama, Epic songwritting, Tears and Floor's voice of a Goddess commanding skills, go for The Poet And The Pendulum. Cheers from the UK Nightwish Army.

For reference, Floor initially thought this song wouldn't be possible to do live, but aftet much public demand she gave in, with the usual stunning result :-)
Hey Dr , so glad too see you back , yea this is such an uplifting , fun song , seeing Nightwish perform this and every song for that matter is an experience youll never forget .
Floor is so in the pocket with the band during this song , incredible quick singing and of course the operatic section is just goosebump heaven , then she just brings it home at the end with those soaring slides .

Thank you for the reaction and analysis. I love to see how you singing specialists break down what "in this case" she needed to do to achieve the sound she wanted. I know Marco has left the band and all of us lost an great singer in his own right. I'd like to see you react to "Kiss while your lips are still red" song where Marco has the lead, also it is very soft song. So you will see side of him many reactors miss. Everyone knows his growling or "Metal voice" in his mind but rarely we see softer side of him in these songs or concerts. And Hello from Finland, hope to see more reactions soon.

Maybe you can also check out EPICA, a Dutch symphonic metal band ( combined with other forms of metal) The founder of the band is Mark Jansen ( not a relative of Floor)
He founded the band after he left After Forever ( Floor’s former band)
The lead singer is Simone Simons a good friend of Floor, who had a similar training. Check out any music from their 10th anniversary concert called Retrospect ( about 10 years ago) The have a complete orchestra and a male and female choir. Also during this concert Floor featured in 2 songs. Sancta Terra and Stabat Matar Delarosa, you will like the last one where you can admire the duet in opera style of these two phenomenal ladies.
During the wakken concert, many cover ghost love score 1st. It was late in the set, and Floor in an an interview said she was sick before the show. Yet wakken is just amazing. Every song a jem. When she agreed to help the band finish their tour commitment, she only had 48 hrs to learn the entire set. She made those songs her own in many ways, but Thoumas constantly told her , "Sure, try it out, see if it works. ". And it did . They offered her the job full time, while touring. They knew they found the perfect person.

Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bull whip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch.
Awesome tune , although it is kind of a popish sound (originally sung by Anette,The second singer of Nightwish), but Floor gave it soooo much POWER !!!
Nightwish lyrics are often a bit interpretive, and not as "straight forward" as many other bands, because Tuomas ( The Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen: founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish.) prefers people to put their own interpretations and life experiences into the lyrics. you connect with songs on a personal level when there is something there that relates to things you have gone/are going through, and you may even find new connections later on in life when you have gone through other big events/emotions. there might be songs you are quite indifferent about (oh, nice song) and then you go through something big and all of a sudden it makes you break down in tears because now you relate to something in the lyrics you didn't before, and see it from a whole new perspective. imagination and life experiences are powerful, and Tuomas has great appreciation of this.

You took a little dive into the lyrics, maybe I can offer some food for thought here.
It might help you to know Tuomas uses several pseudonyms to refer to himself in various Nightwish songs which he writes from experiences, observation or imagination, he says he is a man with a boy's heart and you will see that directly in places even with boy narrators sometimes. He often goes back to childhood memories and experiences but seen as an adult.
Digging into his lyrics is almost a second bite of the cherry although invariably metaphoric, sometimes very ambiguous and nearly impenetrable. He likens it to a painting, you decide what it means to you.
He will also use poet, dreamer, writer/song writer or ocean soul - Tuomas has an affinity for the ocean, he was studying to be a marine biologist.
So here, "A writer by a fire. . . . . ." Tuomas is speaking to you directly, he is the story-teller - "Took a journey into a child-man’s heart" would be Tuomas the boy but he has grown up from being a Peter-Pan, the crib is empty but he's thinking back to those exciting childhood days. Just about everything else in the song now makes sense to the referenced stories and imagination.

The song is from the second lead singer Anette Olzon era. Anette has more of a pop/rock style, and didn't do the operatic parts. Those were done with a choir then. Floor can do them, so she took over those parts when she joined about 10 months before this show. Every song here at Wacken was written for one of the 1st 2 singers. (GLS was an original lead singer Tarja Turunen era song).
Tuomas (keyboards and Primary songwriter) likes themes of stories and childhood innocence. He's also a fan of Disney and composer Hans Zimmer.
