See how to use the MID, SEARCH, FIND and LEN functions in a TRUE FALSE formula for Conditional Formatting. See how to add formatting when only part of the text srting meets the criteria. For example, highlight when ped in somewhere in a text string like The ped is OK.S

Hi I found a shorter formula on the Mr.Excel board =ISNUMBER(SEARCH("ped",B11)) - it works but I don't understand how "isnumber" is used to help find text.
Of all the excel tutorials on you tube, yours are the best, because you are a real teacher, please keep making videos!

    Dear jpmovie1m,
Total Cool! Yes, the Search returns a number and then the Isnumber asks whether it is a number!!!

I wish the video actually showed what it said it was going to show! What you have is formatting the entire cell based on part of it, but your description says you were going to show how to conditionally format only part of the text of the cell. (That's what I'm looking for.)

Right? Wasted half my day searching for this solution and I thought this was it, finally the video to explain it, nope! At this point, I might as well go through the Excel spreadsheet and manually highlight everything, just seems painful :(

109 was removed, many of the earlier videos were removed and replaced with better versions. If you are watching is sequence to learn Excel, it is best to watch the playlists:
    1) Excel Basics
    2) Highline Excel Class
If you know Excel already, go straight to the Highline series. The 1 st videos go over all of Excel basics in high speed, then moves on to intermediate and advanced.

Great video, I am making a calendar, and am trying to keep the text in a box and not allow it to bleed into the adjacent cell, even if some of the text doesn't show. I want to keep the border lines up front and have the text behind it. I am making a calendar and want to keep my lines the same. I am formatting the cells, messing with text wrap and fill but it is not working. Any suggestions. Thank you so much in advance.

This almost answers all the questions I have but it doesn't seem to work when I want to find multiple different texts. example would be if in cell F12 I had the word BED and wanted the format to first check B10:B50 for Ped and then do another search for BED in B10:B50 again. I have 20 different texts that I need to search for within the B column but it seems to only look at the one cell within the column. Any help would be great. Thanks

Hey! I found another way to do the same task. "Home" Tab ->> "Styles" Group ->> "Conditional Formatting" ->> "Highlight Cell Rules" - >> "Text that contains" ->> $F$11.

Well just looking for Ped this: =ISNUMBER(SEARCH(F$11;B10)) does the job. Not a very good video this one.
