      these kind of one-liner political shows are horrible set ups for academics...it was the same thing with jordan peterson - that setting just doesn't work to explore and elaborate on complex ideas, thats why i prefer the long term format for these kinds of discussions

      Oskar Ström
      A man that thinks carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are going down ain't that smart.
      Also, the damage we have inflicted on the environment and biodiversity is unimaginable. The price is not worth it and we better change the way we measure progress.
      The rain forests are being cut down. The water, both fresh and ocean, is polluted heavily. Plastic use has done damage to ocean life. Use of insecticides and antibiotics destroying the eco system. The proliferation of slams and mega cities that are actually food deserts and filled with pollution and carcinogens. The disintegration of family and social life where people don't care as much for their fellow neighbours and the aged.
      To top it all, the concentration of money and power into fewer hands.

      global carbon emissions are actually beginning to plateau, and will likely fall due to efforts outlined in the paris agreement. who are you to say he's not smart? if you are that concerned about deforestation, water degradation, and antibiotic use I hope you're vegan ;)

      M. Fink
      That is patently false.
      There are more vehicles running on fossil fuels today. More electricity being produced by burning coal, natural gus or biomass.
      More freight either air, land or sea. More traveling.
      More consumption of goods that require electricity to be produced, transported and preserved.
      The Fukushima nuclear accident has resulted in the switching off of many nuclear power plants especially in western Europe and Japan that has resulted in more electricity being produced by burning fossil fuels.
      I can go on and on.
      Maybe try to put up a link to your point.

    • @kundakaps
      @kundakaps 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mori ko
      *beginning to plateau*
      That's vague. The charts of carbon emmision have steadily been going up for over a century now.
      *will likely fall*
      That's the hope. But that has yet to happen. Pinker is wrong on that.
      *who are you to say he is not smart*
      Where did I say that?
      I was responding to the comment on top that classified him as one of the smartest people.
      Clearly being wrong on something as basic as carbon emissions and the environmental damage just to reach this very unqual state of existence where the richest 100 humans have more wealth and will continue to do so under the system than half of all inhabitants is a disappointment for a suposedly one of the smartest dudes.

      If we have the universal constructor (a self replicating 3D printer or "artificial plant"). You can battle global warming quickly, terraforming Mars, as well as giving you tons of energy when it creates wind and solar harvesters, and tons of houses and stuff when its used to build things. People don't understand the ridiculousness of exponential growth, 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256 512 1k 2k..., in 40 generations is one quadrillion.

    The confusion between points Bill and DL were saying and Pinker's points is the perspective. Pinker has stepped back and looked at the broader picture, whereas Bill and then DL were looking at specifics. [The same mistake made with weather and climate change.]
    But the screaming people in the audience actually makes this show very difficult to bear.

    • @chachacha0011
      @chachacha0011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you listen again to 5:40 onward, you may see that Bill IS looking at the bigger picture, and Pinker agrees with him.

    • @snowstrobe
      @snowstrobe 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, of course they agree, Bill said as such from the start. And since is Bill's quick on the uptake he got Pinker's point. But that wasn't what was happening for most of that important discussion, which I wish had gone longer.

    • @chachacha0011
      @chachacha0011 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bill's no idiot. He may be a comedian, but he is extremely well-informed, as is his audience. Climate change is an extremely complex issue, and he would be doing viewers a disservice by simply agreeing with everything Pinker said. From reading the comments on this video, I see that pretty much everyone thought Pinker should have had longer to speak, but that's not the format of this show. Guests are brought out to promote their books, and the audience benefits by being introduced to writers they may not be familiar with. I actually had never heard of Pinker, and now I'm going to listen to all of his lectures, of which there are plenty on YT. Just the fact that Pinker is a guest on Real Time lets me know he's worthy of a listen.

    Balance is certainly important... but while good news is nice to hear, it doesn't require attention the way bad news does. We hear about bad news more often, not only because it sells better... but also because it's the news that needs something done about.
    When the plumber comes, you don't give him a tour of all the fixtures that work... you take him to the toilet spewing crap all over the bathroom.

      New Message Bad news is diaster porn, infotainment, it's not there for people to do something about it, research shows people get empathy fatigue, so all this news is doing is desensitizing people, making them more apathetic.

      Jonathan Olson, Pinker is not saying that what we've been doing is working. Listen to 5:40 to the end.

    • @jonathanolson772
      @jonathanolson772 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lava Lover maybe not what we've been doing is working, but what we've been doing has worked to get us to this point, and it would be good for us to understand why it has worked and why it may not be working very well anymore and into the future. What we've been doing is what the developing world is doing to get itself out of poverty. Our growth in the first world is slowing down but that doesn't mean that what got us here was wrong! What got us here was absolutely necessary and we need to continue to learn from that and develop new policies for the future

    • @chachacha0011
      @chachacha0011 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jonathan Olson, I don't know if I agree that what we've done to this point was absolutely necessary. There are many ways things could have been done better, e.g. paying workers fair wages instead of slavery, taking care of the environment all along instead of trying to fix the disaster we now face, allowing women to vote earlier, not forcing children to work in lieu of an education (still happening today), there are tons of examples. The capitalist system only functions on inequality, and externalized costs aim to negate damage done to the environment. Much slower growth would have been far better, IMO

    This segment highlights the biggest problem with the format of this show. Interesting guests with interesting things to say are given very little airtime and then Bill and his guest panel talk over them, many times reiterating things they've already said with no direct bearing on the topic. This could be solved by (1)letting the guest speak, (2) A more 1:1 format for such guests (3) the guest panel could be sent the book or a briefing on it beforehand to allow for a decent discussion.

    Many many improvements without a doubt. At the same time there are so many interconnected dependencies across the world now with food, trade, resources and power supplies that things seem more fragile at the same time. Any problem can have a massive ripple effect.

    Assuming the vast majority of your viewers are not going to read Pinker’s book, you should actually let him be speak for more than 15 second increments.

    Pinker is so much smarter than Maher and what he has to say is more important than the cheap jokes Maher is interrupting him with.

  • @karlpj1
    @karlpj1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I completely agree with Pinker in general terms. The problem for me is his tendency to don't accept exceptions to his rules. The fact is the man never had the ability to destroy the full world as now has, even the violence in general has indeed decreased. He should integrate that concept in his general theory in a more elegant way.
    He does something similar in the blank slate book when he denies the influence of the parents to a great extend. Yes, parents are only a fragment, and probably not the biggest of what will become the personality of the children but he minimizes their importance too much.

    Brilliant, deft work by Bill who eviscerates Pinker swiftly and thoroughly with his two points: nukes and pollution - all the while leaving Pinker to think it was a friendly interview. Among Bill's best interviews.

    I like how the entitled black guy didn't want to believe anything Pinker had to say, he could feel his victim-hood credits dissolving away, so he took over Pinker's time with pointless stories, good thing they cut it out. Pinker should have been the interview guest.

    Are we not taxed enough? Income tax, social security tax(because they are never going to give us our money back), gasoline tax, sales tax, property tax, and now a carbon tax? Who is going to pay for that? And how is that exactly going to solve the problem? The carbon tax is just going to hurt the poor and middle class. Not only will the corporations pass their carbon taxes to the consumers, but those same consumers will be taxed for their every day normal activities. So the carbon tax will be a double slap in the face to the most vulnerable in this country. How can anyone be on board with this?
