    Excellent video! I gave a class to over 600 students on the dissertation module last month, and spoke about your videos. something they asked me for was to see real examples, and so I have now uploaded lots to my channel, where I give a commentary about the strengths and weaknesses while going through the proposal live on screen, I even gave a mark, my students appreciated getting their professor doing a demonstration like this

    32:10 literature review. The purpose of the literature review is to provide adequate context and background. To situate my research within my community or conversation
    Two types of literature reviews:
    1 literature review for proposal. Provide Context of Key Works Only. Also use it to come up with your gap.
    2 This one is for your thesis or dissertation. You try and gather ALL of the significant published literature on that topic.
    Through the Literature review my goal is to simply outline what other people have said. You can critics them for what they said. You can link this together to show whether they are strong or weak.
    In my literature review I do not provide my analysis of the paper or novel. Only provide analysis of the literature I have read.

    In my nursing literature review there is a specific grid for organization. We are required to use it. And we have to choose a nursing theory/framework also. I guess there is some differences on this sort of thing for nursing/medical vs. non medical?

    • @peakdavid

    David, thank you for the lecture, it's another great video. When using literature for journal articles, how do you know when the source is too “old” in the frame of time, as in: "better not to use it if published 10 years ago" etc.?

    • @peakdavid
      @peakdavid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your question, Goran. There is no arbitrary number such as 10 years. Some articles are "seminal" in a field. Some are out of date almost as soon as they are published. As you gain a background in the literature of your field, it will be clear which articles has stood the test of time. Good luck!

    Thank you professor, this was certainly enlightening. Can you kindly notify us on when you will be addressing the Theoretical Framework.
    Secondly, I am researching an issue that is well documented in the Middle East. However there is no literature in South Africa.
    As an insider, I have extensive knowledge of the issue and elders to consult. How do I fill the gap without literature?

    • @peakdavid
      @peakdavid  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Here is my video on theoretical framework: th-cam.com/users/liver1Wc2JNta98 To confirm there is no literature about South Africa on the topic, I would need to know the topic. The second question is that you would document the elders as primary research. Because this is research, any assertions you make based on your own knowledge and experience would also have to be documented as primary research.

    • @sigithebum

      @@peakdavid The topic is on the risk of divorce in consanguineous marriages and the impact divorce can have on their offspring. • @peakdavid
      @peakdavid  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sigithebum The topic of consanguineous marriages in general is extensively covered in the literature. If there is a lack of studies on consanguineous marriages in South Africa, then this is a wonderful opportunity for you to create your own study and report on this topic from the South African perspective. Who is your thesis director?

    • @sigithebum
      @sigithebum 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@peakdavid My thesis director is Dr Nompumelelo Radebe from the department of Anthropology at the University of South Africa. I have gone through tens of articles. They all cover topics that are irrelevant to my research. Other studies have touched on aspects of my research but only superficially. I am Motswana, and have a wealth of information regarding the subject. I do not know how many sources I should use. Still how do I critically analyse something that is not in the literature?

    • @peakdavid
      @peakdavid  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sigithebum There is a ton of research, just on Google, about this topic. I would suggest a chapter on the world history of this type of marriage. Then a chapter on this type of marriage in SA. Then you need to set up your research methodology and conduct your research in your country. If an article is about this type of marriage, then it is relevant. Do you not have an outline of your chapters: intro, lit review, etc.? You really need to plan out your chapters first.

    Thanks, Prof, for the insightful lecture. Could you please tell us the difference in conceptual literature, theoretical literature and conceptual framework?

    • @peakdavid
      @peakdavid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Conceptual literature" is a literature review that focuses on concepts and their relationship. "Theoretical literature" is a literature review that focuses on theories and their relationships, their investigative support, and new hypotheses. A "conceptual framework" is basically the same as a theoretical framework except a conceptual framework uses two or more theories.

      @@adammousa6274 Thanks, Adam. Sounds like you are asking what inhibits these students' writing. I think your next step is to write a strong research question. You will also need to decide whether you will use a quantitative approach to data collection (e.g., counting the number of words produced) or a qualitative approach (e.g., questionnaires, interviews, grades given from teachers) or a mixed approach. Before doing anything else, I highly advise finishing your literature review and then a research proposal.
