Saswati Sen, a principal student of Birju Maharaj is the jewel in the crown of his parampara. She is the true face of the Lucknow gharana as he teaches it. Yet she has put her own individual and personal stamp on the way she dances. I have never seen another kathak dancer who seems to float like she does. Her abhinaya though understated comes across loud and clear and her footwork is spectacular.

Saswatiji is sooo inspiring, enchanting, beautiful, lovely and talented. She's also very sweet in person. Everytime there's a sum, her pose and nazar is so breathtaking. I love that her parandi is magenta color here.

I do not know much about his students but from what I have seen of Chitresh ji, he is a passionate, energetic, dedicated dancer who is doing service to the art. The scions of Birju Maharaj are not. They are merely amusing themselves through life and are showcases of cringing mediocrity and self-satisfaction.
shiva4ever It's correct that dance style of chitresh das students is on top, I think that's mainly because of their Jaipur gharana descendence. Jaipur gharana is more focussed on perfecting dance moves and it excel in it. On the contrary Lucknow gharana don't focus on enough on dance quality. They just follow a particular syllable and stop working on their betterment once they have learnt it, therefore most of their descendants are fatty, not in shape, though I can make an exception for saswati sen. For these reasons I too feel that Jaipur gharana is best.
Even Saswati Sen is overweight and stuck in a plateau, since a very long time. Vishal Krishna, of the same family, is young but already has a 'set programme' which he is busy peddling to make money. So very sad to see that all this learning is for 'business' rather than the lifelong sadhana which actually MADE these gharanas what they are. Times change.
beg to differ Chitresh had to flee to the USA to garner any popularity because his style is sloppy and bow legged and developed "kathak Yoga" to distract from the fact that his style is not well realized and quite shallow (so what that they can take fast Chakkars) he and his students have obnoxious facial expressions sloppy movements and VERY limited repetoire... there are great guru's from within the jaipur gharana the represent the style to its fullest potential and there are COUNTless students of birju maharaj that are very talented
