Hey you guys did excellent exploring but keep this in mind: stay very stealthy if you wanna remain alive.

I still remember when the northern end of this lower level served as an underpass between the two platforms above. At one time the mezzanine was not entirely in the paid fare zone. Each staircase had its own turnstiles. If you accidentally went down the wrong set of stairs (uptown instead of downtown), you had to use the underpass to avoid paying a second fare. That's what happened to me on June 27, 1968. That lower level gave me the creeps even back then!

Anyone notice the graffiti on the wall that read “RIP SWAYZE”? This must refer to the late actor Patrick Swayze, who played the main role in the 1990 movie “Ghost”. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that one of the most important scenes in the movie was shot on this very platform. Patrick Swayze’s character, Sam Wheat, had been murdered by a thug hired by a business associate, and he becomes a ghost who can’t be seen or heard. He comes across another ghost in the subway system, a man who had committed suicide in the subway system and his ghost was therefore condemned to roam the subways for eternity. This ghost is able to move objects and Sam demands that the man teach him how to do it. The lessons take place at this station.

That's an interesting video. I thought part of the lower level of 42nd street / PABT was destroyed by the 7 line extension. Seems it still exists in it's full former glory! Yes, this level was used for special fare trains to the Aquaduct Racetrack, or special fare trains to Howard Beach/JFK.

NICE....Looks like its a storage for all the track transponders for the CBTC signal system

The Lowe level was used by Aqueduct Racetrack specials from the 1940s til 1980s.

Actually the station remained unused and untiled until it began being used for the Aqueduct Racetrack special in 1959. That service ended in 1981.

      (A) express SB track. You might still be able to see where the track going to the lower level switched off, though the track itself has been removed, I think.

@@TonyP9279 Thank you. It's so sad to see so many subway stations abandoned, was once the largest in the world especially. Hopefully they'll reclaim them to reopen and reuse them to its original glory.
