I've got a newer version of these. It's an 01. Finding parts for it has been a pain, and VW hates it's previous cars. The top is also a pain to replace. My car came with the auto top feature, but it stopped working when I saved it from the junkyard. The 2.0l is slow, but gets amazing gas mileage. I use it as a leasure car, even though I seem to be working on it more than I drive it.
Parts? Seems fairly easy. They share with Jetta and Golf. My top is like new, still. Its garaged. 2000 model. 22 yr old cars often need some work. I find it worth it for the summers.
I had a 97 Cabrio, same color as the one in this video. It was a fun little car when the weather was good, but reliability was very bad. First the A/C broke, then the clutch, then the electrical system. I put way too much money into this car, and finally got rid of it after 10 years of ownership. I may have fond memories of it in the summertime, but it rather soured me on VW.
I had the mk. 1 in the 90s, it was super slow but so tossable just like a GTI. The second gen here somehow managed to be even slower and it was a turnoff when I test drove one. The leather is nice but the rad 90s "neon worm" fabric is the way to go!
I’ve driven both, test drove several Cabriolets and a few Cabrios 3 summers ago. I was Sold on the MK3. Love them both, but theMK3 felt more solid and some features (power trunk, power locks, alarm, air bags) are too nice to be with out.
When we first got married my wife wanted a Cabrio, we bought a 1999 model. Absolutely, hands down without question and no close second place the worst new car I have ever owned. Constant electrical problems which the dealer never could seem to fix. VW corporate had a very " blame the customer" attitude. At the same time my brother had the first generation Audi TT which also had multiple unfixable electrical problems. He actually got rid of his Audi and replaced it with a PT cruiser which was vastly more reliable (if significantly less fun). Either one of us ever have, nor ever will consider another Volkswagen product.
@@super-kami-guru That's the kind of myth making that keeps Volkswagen in business and keeps the unwary buying them. Point is, VWs are SO unreliable that even the automotive world's whipping boy the PT cruiser is a vastly more dependable daily ride.
Besides luxurly level manufacturers out of Germany (like the big three, Merc, Bmw and Audi), I did not find anything Germany built comparable to their Japanese variants up until to late 90'-mid 00's. So this VW of it's time, for me, was no comparison to what was coming out of Japan at the time, both design and engineering wise.
Well, it depends entirely on the model and brand, the Golf with the 1.9 TDI engines is one of the most dependable of all time, easily reaching 800.000 kilometres with proper care. Many japanese cars from this era were rusting like crazy back then. With that said, there were of course also bad cars, like the Opel Kadett, seemingly rusting from the get go.
@@djkenny1202 My comment wasn't on limiting things to whether a vehicle had 4 seats or not, rather the general design and engineering of cars in the aforementioned period from Japan were much better compared to what was coming from Germany. If you need to HAVE 4 seats you'll be stuck with this picnic basket from Germany, unfortunatelly. Better than catching the public bus I guess. lol
How? They blew too much wind on people. These are much less windy. These feel much better built. The added safety is nice. Handy features like power locks and power trunk. More space inside. Better engine. Just a more livable car to use regularly. I srsly considered a Cabriolet, and after seeing several, realized the Cabrio was the better purchase.
I had a red 4 door Wolfsburg from this era, it was my favourite car I ever owned, great instrument cluster, seats, dashboard, and steering wheel.
VW cabriolet 1980s ans 1990s is my favorite. Great and reliable car
this car has always reminded me of a picnic basket
lol nailed it.
Aye Boo Boo, let’s go gets some Vw Cabrios …
With two beautiful girls wearing sunglasses on the backseats.
@cacatua97 This would be perfect to take on a picnic.
@@BrunoMalan And how about a gorgeous girl in the front passenger seat, with her bare feet resting on the dashboard?
This really makes me wish it were spring already.
Dynamic with that classic vw styling. A rare beast indeed on today's roads.
Very nice and beautiful VW Cabriolet 95
At least this Volkswagen Cabrio has standard antilock brakes and dual airbags. I would take one with an automatic.
One of the most solid feeling convertibles ever made, very impressive
I would agree at the time it was, but convertible body structures have come a long way since this one
Agreed. My 2000 feels great.
Love the color-matching gearshift.
3:38 John: ALTHOUGH THE PASSENGER’S (AIRBAG) DISPLACES THE GLOVEBOX! LOL
We have this exact car! It’s a 95 in blue with the same leather interior - it’s awesome! Love our Cabby, wish you could still get them
I used to work at a repair shop where several lovely young female customers had these cars.
I miss them!

I'm sure they loved going topless 😂

"so cute, we could hardly stand it" Me: waiting for attractive young woman to drive up. Instead, just a giant beard capable of driving.
My wife still has her 1999 Cabrio . It is a fun little Whip
I remembered playing a diecast versiom of these as a kid!
These things have gone up so much in value for a clean example it’s insane. If it’s low mileage it’s even worse
snagged one for 3k🤑🤑🤑

The cabrio had a taller 5th gear than the golf / jetta. I bet that contributed to the good fuel economy, and somewhat slow quarter mile.
There should’ve been a GTI cabriolet.
I bought a 1999 in Sept '22 as a gas saver commuter. Now I'm restoring it back to new. Didn't expect to like this car that much.
I bought a 2000 model 3 years ago. Its really fun and nicely finished. Best small convertible that is practical, and seats 4.
I regret selling mine. Biggest mistake I’ve done car wise. It was economical, solid, fun to drive and so easy to maneuver. What a regret honestly. 😢

VW Easter basket
Volkswagen Cabrio: the official car of almost every high school girl in the 1990s
*rich girl. The average 16-17 year old Jane didn't have a $20k car.
This is the same exact year, color and loaded edition I have today in 2024 and still breaking necks

So this was the same price as a Miata, right? I don't really see any reason to buy this instead of the Miata. Maybe if you really needed 4 seats...
Precisely. I’ve got 2 kids, or it could be as your single car. Nice to have 4 seats. I really enjoy my 2000 model.
where did all these went? clunkers?
It would be cool if VW brought this back.
As tested price for this 95 Cabrio is very close to the price of a 95 M edition Miata they tested. Hmm.
I like it 👍

With the two valve per cylinder this engine is not sophisticated for mid-90s basically it's Lada and it's not fast at all even the regular GTI
