To me, there is no tennis without Serena and Venus. End of an era. Watching her matches helped me in trough dark times in my life. I wish she knew this
She kept opening her eyes big trying to hold back the tears. Glad she let it out in the end. Glad she could end Toronto with a familiar, friendly face in Bencic. It really hits different when the camera zoomed out and you realize she will never play on this court again after over two decades of legendary tennis. No one else will ever fill that void. No one else will ever play tennis like Serena. Thank you, Serena!
Good riddance. What she, and her sister (their fathers instructions), did was bring howling and screaming to tennis. Without the screams, take away a few slams and other titles from both of them. The most unsportsmanship-like tennis players ever. She wont be missed by Honest tennis fans. There have been other much better players who didn't need to scream and howl nor use steroids.
It hits different when you realize she will never play Miami again, where she won 8 times, or the Australian Open, where she won 7 times. It would be like if Roger did his farewell tour and skip Cincinnati, shame.
One of the greatest of all times? Who comes close? None. She is by far the greatest of all time and I doubt if any female tennis player can eclipse her records in the near future.
That's was emotional , tennis will surely miss the dominance and fiercness she's brought to tennis over the decades ..Love from your best fan..I feel emotional myself
Serena we love you. It's sad to think we will never have another you the greatest of all time... But we will always have the memories and we will always have the videos to go back and watch of your greatness. Thank you for giving us more than we could have ever asked for as tennis fans for your entire career.
This is so so emotional. I just couldn’t hold back the tears. Serena is a legend that there will hardly ever be another like in the history of WTA. Exceptionally outstanding player👏👏👏
This was very beautiful. Thank you Toronto. Like everyone else commented, the tears willingly flowed. A remarkable woman with a remarkable career who left us many remarkable tennis memories. #GOAT
Serena and Venus helped open my eyes to the world of tennis as a new player in junior high school. Seeing them play their first US Open final against each other was mind blowing… and then Serena just took OVER! She will be missed. I still talk about her fight and comeback attitude on the court with the players I currently coach. All the best to her and Alexis and Olympia… and their future addition.
Im literally crying, i dont want it to end. I will miss Serena with all my heart. I wish I will be able to meet her and talk to her in person about how much she has helped me all these years 😭😭😭
Hats off to Toronto for such lovely presentation 👏 Serena is closing one chapter of her life to start a new one .Thank you for all those great game of tennis. Enjoy your retirement.
That was so very nice what they said about her thanking her for all the years and giving her the two shirts and the beautiful flowers they really love her there I even got tears in my eyes she’s a remarkable person she will be remembered for years to come
Truly end of an era, I watched Serena and VEnus WIlliams play from the age of 6, I'm 32 now.... I couldn't help but cry and think about everything good and bad that has happened to my life during this time
Respect! One of the greatest fighters in the game, authentic, always spoke and played her heart out, simply the greatest of all time. We will miss you Serena. All the best in your future. Love from Canada
OMG I got so emotional watching the match and then the love of the people of Toronto! I have watched Serena and her sister Venus from the beginning. I cannot imagine tennis without the two. They have given so much to the game and so lifted up girls and women and especially young Black girls. Everyone can play tennis and they have opened the door to kids of color. Yes! I just love you Serena! Good luck and I am praying for that new baby so Olympia can be a big sister. God bless you and you family. Much peace and prayers always
I've had the good fortune of seeing Serena play a few times, teens, 20's and 30's all at Flushing Meadow. I will be going again to see her farewell. Anyone that doubts that this woman is the greatest female player of all time is just in denial and foolish. In her prime she wipes the court with anyone else in the history of the game that has ever picked up a racquet. Both legends that would have a claim to being in that conversation Graff and Navritilova without hesitation agree Serena is the GOAT.
Can't just hold my tears, but it's tears of joy, who will i watch again because ? I just started watching tennis because of ger intensity and emotions in fact i love Serena
I am not looking forward to the US Open and her final match this has brought me to tears realising my favourite player of all time is finally retiring.
I've been saying for year I love her but I want her to go live her life! Now that the moment is here I realised that I'm not ready 😭😂 The only little black boy, in my area, standing on the court because of her. Hanging out at country clubs, going to tournaments in random cities, becoming a better student, and the love for tennis! Im grateful to have witnessed the last 20 years, and witness the writing of a legendary story. Thank you!

I am very touched to see the greatness of a serena,,, a very good tennis player, strong, full of enthusiasm and has a very tough tenacity,,, Serena deserves to be a legend and will always be remembered for all time,,, we love u serena..
I live on Toronto now and this would've been my only chance to see her play in real life and I wasn't able to get tickets. It's a bummer that I missed out on this legend. May she have an even more successful life post tennis.
She so naturally emotional that it'll be difficult dealing with crowd support etc the rest of the tournaments she plays in!!! So many memories - give her flowers please...
I can't even conceive how she'll be able to play in New York! She wears emotions on her sleeve, and this shit is emotional as HELL!!! Shit, she got ME crying lol
My first intro to tennis was Monica Seles. Then came Venus Williams, who laid the foundation for little sister Serena Williams whom I remember 1st seeing play in 1998 at The Lipton Open in Key Biscayne, Fla against Anna Kournikova I believe then she lost to Martina Hingis in a tough 3 setter. I knew then she was gonna be a force to be reckoned with. What I love about Serena is that she didn't wait for anything to come to her, she just took it. The way she played and the way she moved around a tennis court was anything short of admiring. She made tennis look easy and understandable. And I could always tell how she was gonna do by the way she was moving. Her game was her movement; the serve and the powerful groundstrokes were always a constant. Her style of play is what I termed "technique tennis". Thank you for the years, the tears, the ups and the downs. Well done to a great and stellar career. Thank you for changing game and bringing more tennis players of color along the way. Best wishes in the chapter of your life.
You will surely be miss by everyone, including me as a fan . All that thrilling matches from the start way back late 1990's with Seles, ,Graf, Hingis and all the likes up to this season. Tennis will never be the same without the vibes of Serena or rather, the Williams sisters at the court. Can't wait to see her play in every matches. Good luck on her new journey ahead . Job well done to her 👍.
This was so emotional. I don’t know if I’ll be able to look at women’s tennis as I have before. What an amazing career she’s had and what an amazing champion she was
THAT is how to treat a tennis icon. She has had decades of success around the world. She has treated adversity with much more class than they way she has been treated. Here's to having as much success from here on in as she had on the court. She is the #1 of all time when you consider the competition she has faced. To do it for over 20 years is simply amazing. Congrats Serena and you are welcome back any time.
Good bye ! Please don't cry! We both know this is not what you need right now, but we will always love you our black queen of tennis who had made us all interested in the sports since 1999.
Nope it's either Margaret Court if you just consider the slam counts, otherwise it's Steffi Graf hands down as she achieved the golden slam and we saw how tough/nearly impossible it is to achieve as we saw with Djokovic last year!
Not a big fan of hers but nobody can deny what she and venus did to women's tennis. Her dominance and longevity is just simply amazing. She really set the bar way up there. Have a happy retirement serena!
It has been an emotional evening for me. Serena I wish I could turn back the hands of time but I can't. May God continue to cover you and Family under His Wings. Words cannot explain how I miss you . You are the reason I started to watch women tennis. If you could only see me right now tears running down Oh how I miss you . Lots of ❤❤❤❤❤

I bet she doesn't have another, maybe though. It gets more risky with her age, but still very possible since she turns 41 next month.
