Backblaze has a severe security issue imho. When creating a backup, data will be decrypted on Backblazes servers, then zipped, and then sent to the user. So data will exist in unencrypted format on their servers. I wonder why nobody addresses this.
With that being said, if they ship you your data this closes the security loophole you are talking about as nothing has to be decrypted on site to make available to download.
You create a private encryption key and then when it goes to backblaze it is encrypted. If lose the password no one can help you so you do need store it safely to access the backup
That's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with Acronis for local system backup! In a similar vein, I wanted to recommend the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series. It offers a massive capacity of up to 5kWh, fast recharging, and versatile sockets, making it ideal for outdoor camping and ensuring uninterrupted power supply. It's definitely worth considering for your backup power needs!
Thanks for the review. Very insightful. Just purchased a 14 TB WD external drive for backup and it uses Acronis as the software for backing up. Then I have a 2nd 8T drive for storing video files I need regular occasional access to (sort of like my drive D:). This saves a LOT of space on my 1T C: drive. I'm planning to get iDrive for offsite backup to the cloud. It's not a matter of "if" your drive is going to crash, but WHEN...
This is Michael . It looks like IDrive is the best. Backblaze is worthless since it only does data files. That list of excluded files takes out EXE, dll, sys and many other files. Acronis is the best choice but it is priced ridiculously high and they are going to lose a huge potential customer base for ripping people off.
Maybe things have changed (?) but when I used Backblaze, 3 years ago, I was able to just remove/delete things from that excluded list (eg exe) and they were then backed up.
I was using SpiderOak One for years, but with recent issues I am in the market for a new solution. I really want to like Backblaze but the fact that I can't select which folders I want backed up (I generally only want to backup specific folders on my main computer). It's surprisingly hard it find something that works how I want. I already have multiple layers of backups (Daily OS drive imaging to NAS with Macrium Reflect, backup specific folders from my main computer to my NAS with Duplicati, backup specific share on my NAS with Crashplan. Then I had SpiderOak One backing up specific folders on all my devices. So that's the part I'm looking to replace. People keep giving me suggestions of Tresorit and Filen but these all seem like cloud storage not backup. I'm considering just using Duplicati and backing up to Backblze B2, but Duplicati can be unreliable.
Thanks for the great review. Am I missing something? From my research, Acronis can not be used when trying to restore to a completely new Mac in the case of hardware failure.
Can you share how you solved your upload speed problem. I’m having such issues with cloud storage. I purchased idrive. According to my speed test my upload speed is 20mbps. I have 900GB. According to my math that 12.5 hours. But I’m already in day 6 of uploading and still am only at 80%.
@@PeteMatheson wow. Thank you for that clarification. Tech support at idrive agreed with me on the 12.5 days and seemed stumped! I feel better. Thanks Pete
Most of them are, but there are some I've recently tried where you can select the geographic area to store your data. Synology, I think Acronis also - but you can specify Europe and not the UK specifically.
I would choose Acronis if they didn't force all the other bs on us or at least offered a BU only service. I don't need a nanny state telling me what is and is not a virus foraging through my files. What a shame.

@Alexander Deris I'm torn between Acronis & iDrive. Acronis is more feature rich, iDrive seems faster. Will decide by end of summer.

I'm so tired of Carbonite. I can't even find the files in my backup which are supposedly being backed up. They have little or no customer support.
I have been using Acronis for local system full backup for many years. They have NEVER failed me...ever.

Have an update for 2024?

How do you display your upload speed on the top right corner in the video?
Curious if you're going to do a 2023 update? The one you linked to in the description is online storage, not a backup solution.
Planning on an update yes! Which one were you clicking on and I'll take a look 👍🏼
Great video! Thanks for all the helpful info!
I honestly think Avepoint should be in this list
Did you ever do the video on Acronis? Will there be an update on best cloud backup?
Great explanation, thank you!
As I'm a photographer, I took your advice and went for Backblaze. Thanks again Pete.
can i back up full system images to the cloud with acronis? Struggling to pick between acronis and iDrive...

Can sync be considered a backup cloud storage?
I have the same question. I don't understand the difference between backing up and having it on two different cloud providers.
Can you explain why you think sync and dropbox are not backup?
@@PeteMatheson ooh i see ok thank you. Indefinitely need a backup then. 👍cheers
Great video and very helpful. BTW are there any UK based cloud storage providers or are they all US-based?

idrive is slow and constantly down
I don't have a Mac but I liked this video because of your hard work 😉
You should get one then 😂
@@reformed0671 give me money I will get it 😉
Can I use those for Windows ?
@@PeteMatheson thank you ❤️
Have I missed something, why not just use ICloud?
you mentioned cloud storage that are not even in the top 5 category. \'🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱
I guess you think Google, Microsoft and Dropbox are all backup services? They’re not.
