To his credit, like Ray Harryhausen, David Allen was able to imbue his stop motion creatures with personality and emotion. That was especially true in "The Primevals". The Yeti, particularly the last one we see, went above and beyond what it was doing in that you could tell what it was feeling. No mean feat, that. A great and fun film to experience... Worthy of the old saying: "They don't make 'em like that any more.".
We need more stop-motion animation and less CG! Perhaps The Primevals will inspire filmmakers to use more stop-motion...we will see.
I agree with you. Stop Motion rawks !! the humans are traditionally the weak link. David Allen was a genius. I waited years to see this - after reading it about in Videolog ? when it showed up as a 3 disc set - in a lunchbox - i was beyond psyched. Such a great saturday-sunday/first cup of coffee movie. felt like i was 10yrs old again.
Yes, with stop-motion animation it's the most important aspect to the movie. Fortunately with The Primevals, the story and acting is decent enough so that's another plus.
I was on the fence, but you convinced me to check it out. As a '78 kid that grew up with O'Brien & Harryhausen films, I'm sorry I haven't check it out sooner. Laser Blast is a classic. Q and Puppet Master? Bride of Re-Animator? I am shamed.
Yes, Dave Allen was one of the great stop-motion animators of all time, so glad Full Moon released The Primevals.
While I agree on your comments on Dragonslayer, I think that the work Jim Danforth did for When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth is also up there, as far as natural and smooth stop motion goes.

Agreed, I love Danforth's work including the stop-motion work he did for Flesh Gordon, although I believe he used a pseudonym in the credits lol.
I'm so excited to finally see The Primevals. I remember reading articles about it in Cinemafantastique when I was a kid in the 1980s.

I just happened upon this movie, "Primevals," here on the tube, WOW! How did I never hear of this movie! Then Your video about the Movie! WOW! Thank You Sir for sharing this information about it! This is going to be a MUST for me now! I am really looking forward to this!

Thanks again for the update and review about this movie. It looks to be a lot of fun. I know of at least 4 people who've been talking about and wanting to see this movie. In fact, 1 of whom was the first to talk about it as I hadn't even known this existed. I will make a point to watch this soon.
It is a lot of fun and an absolute must for fans of stop motion animation. David Allen was one of the best and The Primevals is probably his crowning technical acheivement.
Hammer films almost made an earlier draft of this story as Pterodactyls Vs Zeppelin in the early 70s, but the studio was running into big financial trouble and it got canned.
That would have been great to see from Hammer.
