    not to be an ex-christian but my favorite part of Comedy is the blasphemy. This guy literally makes himself look like Moses in front of the burning bush. in a song making fun of how self-important he's being, he visually sets himself up as some sort of Prophet of Comedy appointed by God himself. It's exquisite

    I think every time a joke starts with "whoever walks into a bar" the punchline is either racist or hateful towards that specific group of people, by saving a seat for "the jew" he's turning that around.

    The whole "Jew walks into a bar" thing. There's so many old jokes that start "so, a Jew walks into a bar" or "a Jew and a priest walk into a bar" it's a classic starting line for a joke. So, a Jew walks into a bar, and he saved him a seat, it's like he's saving a "seat" for comedy. That's how I interpreted it anyway

      I think "saving a seat" is meant to be a showy yet meaningless token of being inclusive and considerate to minority groups. Bo is pointing out that changing the ending of the classic joke to be more inclusive is an example of "healing the world with comedy", which obviously doesn't have any meaningful impact. This fits with the theme of the song, which is "making a literal difference, metaphorically"

      @@Geomitron Oh shit! I took it as rather than the usual mildly offensive punchline for a joke that like, instead he's saving him a seat and thus healing the world with comedy. BUT I hadn't considered this being yet another callout of performative activism. What an excellent take!

      It might be a distinctly American type of anti-Semitic joke. for the record I’m jewish (non-practicing). I don’t hear these jokes anymore but growing up people were always yelling ‘a Jew walks into a bar joke’ or ‘a rabbi’

    Comedy = Tragedy + Time
    Time = Money
    Tragedy = 9/11
    Comedy = 9/11 + Money?

    "saving a seat" is an "inclusive" or politically correct punchline/ending to one of the most generic (and often racist) incipit of a joke: "a jew walks into a bar..". He's "healing the world" with a joke by "helping" the jew within the joke itself, which actually won't change a thing, and that's the ironic part, which Bo's aware of

    In America when a joke starts “a Jew walks into a bar…” you know you’re about to hear some grade A racism.

    The "jew walks into a bar" joke is a play on words. You can "save a seat at the table" for someone, meaning that you've included him in the conversation. But there are also stereotypes about Jews being stingy and always saving money.

    • @plexus
      @plexus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow... somehow connecting “saving a seat” with the Jewish stereotype of stinginess is actually pretty racist on it own. Lol. Nice cards. I fold.

      @@plexus Well I'm curious--how do you understand the lyric?

    • @plexus
      @plexus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lavachebeadsman it’s pretty simple. “A Jew walks into a bar” is a classic racist stereotype joke. Instead of saying something racist, he says “and I saved him a seat”, an act of kindness. Which on its own isn’t even really a joke, and not funny at all, if it were told out of the context of this song. But with the added context of the song, it actually becomes a really funny joke, because he’s subverting the expectation, and using the typical racist joke as a way to put a more progressive message of inclusion out into the world, aka “healing the world with comedy” . But the whole point isn’t actually to “heal the world” with comedy, it’s actually commentary on comedians who actually think their comedy has that kind of power and is so important, and that the world is losing something so precious when COVID hit, shut down the comedy scene entirely, and they can’t perform anymore. Hence the “making a literal difference, metaphorically”
      What’s doubly ironic though and I don’t think was really intended at all by Bo, and something he would scoff at and deny, is how this comedy special, in the end, made a way bigger impact on people than he really realized when he made it, and actually did provide many people some degree of healing by connecting with it on a deeper level. He’d scoff at it because it makes this seem like he actually does think his comedy has this “indescribable power”... which was completely facetious when he said it. He really meant the opposite. But it kinda turned out to have more power than he realized.

    As I have a smoke tucked behind my ear at the moment I figured I would take a sec to give you an explanation. I work by myself a lot and can only take a smoke break when there are no customers. The time it takes to dig out the pack and get a smoke out can be the difference in if I get to smoke any of it before someone arrives. So I take it out ahead of time and keep one behind more ear for speed. You do need the right ear shape for it to work though.

    A Jew walks into a bar is a genius line from Bo.
    It's classic way to set up a joke, "So..a jew walks into my bar, right....."
    But also, it's a nod to the ever present paranoia Christians have regarding Jews

  • @pastafarians

    The 'joke' was an anti-joke. People expect from the first line it is going to be the same old lame (sexist/racist/etc) joke they have heard so many times before and are expecting to laugh or groan from the set up first line. An anti-joke takes that expectation and throws it away. Hence the reaction of 'I don't get it. I was expecting a lame joke' from the audience. That is the comedy and genius in what Bo does.

    The (jew walks into a bar joke),in my opinion was him saying, "Classic comedy is kinda immature and often mean for no good reason." Thats why the seat was saved. It is also a play on the fact that comedians are always being canceled for offensive jokes, so he gave us a non-offensive joke to show that comedy is actually good for people, he just delivered it in a way that was non-offensive in order to get the point across for all those overly sensitive people out there. He's kinda mocking the idea really.
