Hey y’all. I just wanted to say that the reason I made the comments about the veggie police being on my tail lately is because it blows my mind that some people still don’t realize that food insecurity is real. Sally isn’t worried about affording a carrot when she has kids to feed. The point of my entire You Tube existence is to help. I am not a dietitian. I am not a nutritionist. I am simply a person who knows what it’s like to grow up with moments of being food insecure. If you tube existed back then, it would have helped my parents so much.
PS.. to those veggie police.. pasta sauce is a veg. 😂

Amen! My parents could have definitely benefited from these videos, too. You are doing a wonderful service to folks in need. Right now I'm no longer in that category but I'm saving to buy a house. I don't want to waste money unnecessarily on food so I'm looking for ways to stretch my dollar as far as I can. Every budget meal I make is more money into my savings account.

And furthermore, Veggie Valerie needs to worry about her kids and family, not everyone else. If you have a budget that allows fresh vegetables, then by all means, veg it up. But if you are Frugal Franny just trying to decide how to feed her kids until her first paycheck comes in or after she had an unexpected car repair that wiped her out, these videos can be life changing.

You must keep in mind that common sense ain't that common. If someone has ever truly been in this situation and need to feed your family with so little, you look for items that are filling and stretchable if possible. Brooke I think it's great that you give mama's ideas that are realistic! Much respect from NC!

I've grew up where we fell between the cracks of foodstamps and making " to much money". We were poor. 5 kids, single Mom, she worked, by the time she payed rent utilities, gasoline to get to work we had very little. Fruits and veggies were What was on sale ,as was hamburger. If no clearance produce no produce was had. That's real life. Not complaining my Mom did all she could for us. But people a hungry tummy don't care how much produce is in it. Some situations its a treat, instead of cakes or candy. So get over your snobby selves. Poor and greatfuland very proud my Mom was a great woman. You do awesome Brooke. Your a kind, caring, resourceful, helping WOMAN.

There was a time I was volunteering at a soup kitchen. A woman came in with her three kids and we got to talking. She told me how bad she felt when she took her kids to the grocery store and they wanted a piece of fruit.
Hunger is real, has been real for a long time for a lot of people. Many folks feed their families what they can. Be respectful and know that these mamas are trying their best!

I’m so happy I found this series. While my family is (THANKFULLY) not food insecure, we should all learn to spend more mindfully. There is way too much food waste in this country, and we all need to be more mindful of that. When you know better, you do better.

Those whom complain about adding veggies probably never shopped on a strict budget to feed a family.
As long as it fills belly's.
I learned to toss meats rice or potato in a baking dish when feeding my children budget meals.
I would go as far as using salad dressing for seasoning for my mix ups.
Even ranch to roast potatoes. It works.

We're vegan now (not because we're against eating meat, but because of health problems) so we eat a significant amount of vegetables, but when my husband went back to college in Missouri and our family of five was broke as broke could be for 5 years, we ate what we could afford. Our priority was never WHAT we ate, it was THAT we ate. Yes. Food insecurity is very real. Thank you for that reminder!

Growing up my mom made a lot of one pot meals and they were all good my favorite was when she made either using turkey legs/wings or chicken thighs whichever she had at the time, she would season the be meat boil them until they were falling apart then pick the meat and add green peppers and onion and a bag of egg noodles to the broth it was delicious! Kind of like a soup but not as much broth. It's a cheap easy dinner to feed your family

On are days when its close to pay day I will get a dollar box of beef flavored rice (I use 2), half pound of some kind of cooked ground meat. 1 pack taco seasoning 1 jar of taco sauce, and a small amount of shredded cheese. Cook rice according to direction on the box. After meat is done add taco seasoning. Then add seasoned meat and taco sauce to rice mixture. Put in a 9 x 13 baking dish. Sprinkle cheese on top. Heat in oven on 350 for 10 to 15 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted. We use in soft shell tortillas or like nachos. We also use the chicken flavored one the same just use cooked chicke

I have been waiting for someone to do a series like this. I have watched so many people do low budget meals but none of them do it to where if you had nothing in the house. I appreciate this so much. I have been where there wasn’t enough money to get food, which I relied on the food bank. However now, we are okay. But I love seeing you feed your entire family on very little. It reassures those with kiddos that it can be done. I’m a wife and momma to 3, this is so inspiring and I can’t wait for the next video. Keep up the amazing job! May God bless you and your family!

It could make the difference between our families very life or death. I'm not about to complain that there isn't fresh fruit and veges or not having the time to cook from scratch. It is a blessing knowing how to keep my family fed, warm, and safe. I'm not trying to be doom and gloom but I'm not one to mince words. My family means everything to me and I am so very grateful for any knowledge of how best to do that. I believe in praying for the best but preparing for the worst. I think this is a fine meal idea. I been where I needed $6 and did not even have that! Stretching food dollars is very important, especially when you have kids. I want to add some ideas. I buy frozen vegetables when they are on sale as they are so good to bulk up meals. I used to buy broths too. But then discovered the add to water kind of broth makers. I have 2 kinds now. Chicken and Beef. You only need one tsp. for a cup of broth. I have them both in my pantry now and use them in crock pot recipes.

Brooke, having lived in the mountains for over 40 years and having been snowed in occasionally in earlier years, I maintain a pantry. I would enjoy a make-it-to-payday series with first the meal you can create using store ingredients only, then a meal with the same store ingredients plus basic pantry ingredients that can be accumulated on a tight budget - and maybe even a third version including home-preserved items. I think that could be helpful in showing the benefit of having even a small pantry to fall back on.

I would tell the veggie police to kick rocks. If they don't like the dish don't cook it. Some people really have nothing better to do than to pick and nag at people that are actually doing something. I have been in this situation, unfortunately. I went back to school after my husband and I divorced with three kids to take care of, at times I could only feed them and it was whatever I could afford and they were happy and healthy. I didn't know how to cook yet, and back then no youtube, internet, or mom around to teach me. I think your channel and others are amazing. I am a great cook now and all but one of my sons are grown and out on their own but boy they love coming home to Mama's cooking now. LOL Keep your channel just the way it is, if someone has veggies they can always add them to your dish, it's not rocket science.

People be like "well , if you were standing on your head and your money fell out of your pocket,I bet you couldn't do it". 🙄 Ignore them. They couldn't do any of it. You rock girl.

Anyone who complains about a lack of veggies isn't lacking in $$$ but definitely lacks situational awareness. A beans & rice dinner is a (tasty) staple for a reason.

I just remembered a Depression-era dish my mother taught me - a can of tomatoes UNdrained, a can of peas UNdrained, heat it all in a pot and then slowly add a beaten egg. Tomato, pea, and egg drop soup! In fact, I may make it one day this week after work.

Hi Brooke!!! Thanks for the great videos and recipes! I’ve tried quite a few and everyone loved them! Im definitely trying this one! As far as the haters are concerned don’t give them a second thought! Yes of course it’s better to include veggies but sometimes it just can’t be done based on what’s in your wallet. Anyone who has ever really struggled knows that your first priority is to fill your kid’s bellies! Take care you’re awesome!!!

I recently noticed myself craving a gently seasoned meal. My using less of a bold flavored packet, I save most for later & still enjoy a great meal.

Your videos are great. I like to save money on my meals and I too will not shop at some places because of the cost. You did an amazing job with $7. I can not tell you how much macaroni and beans I have eaten when money was tight. I never thought of vegetables during these times. Good job mom.

Mac n cheese w/sliced hot dogs is a favorite in our house. It’s something both my husband and I liked as kids, and now our kids like it too. Nothing wrong with having inexpensive meals in your menu rotation.😊

Make it to pay day veggies are canned. Always cheapest unless hit a huge discount. We eat lots of canned veggies, put into casserole, soup or stir fry works great
