  • Angela Rayner, the shadow education secretary, tells me she believes voters have felt powerless in recent years but that 'things have changed' and people are starting to realise they have the opportunity to transform Britain.
Subscribe to The Guardian on TH-cam ► is.gd/subscribeguardian
We took a walk around her constituency of Ashton-under-Lyne, where she told me she thinks Theresa May has shown arrogance in taking a general election victory for granted and how, for perhaps the first time in a long time, Labour is offering a genuine alternative to Tory austerity and cuts at the general election.
This interview was recorded on the same day as the cowardly attack on Manchester. Just want to make sure people know that we weren't avoiding the subject.

"The only way you get in there (grammar schools) is by having private tuition"
I attended a grammar school and got in without private tuition but with hard work from a working-class family. This argument is completely redundant because families who can afford private tuition use it not just for 11+ but GCSEs and other qualifications.

Over Labour's 13 year run, our pay and conditions were destroyed. It was a period where I actually wrote to the PM, so disgusted with it was I. The minimum wage was set too low and higher wages crushed to the minimum. Overtime has gone - bank holiday pay, gone. Night pay and attendance bonuses - gone. And the rise of massive employment agencies supplying workers on zero hours. Where were the unions and the TUC? Here in the South West wage theft has been as common as the lack of hot food, being in the same industry for 33 years I can say it was none existent pre Thatchers period. No one writes out an excel project sheet that shows a loss, but just in case it does loose, they have always got the workers wages to play with to balance the books. I want to see a "none of the above" box on the next voting form, reboot the system.

It was a good interview Owen, Angela comes across as an intelligent and caring human being - as opposed to a suited no marks slavishly following some political script; regardless. The attribute that sticks in my mind; regarding Angela, is the the fact that she has real experience of life and of the sort of genuine struggles that countless people face throughout their lives.
Although I was an active member of the Labour Party - Branch Secretary, Constituency officer, electoral agent and candidate - I tore up my membership card after Blair became PM in 97. (Kept the one with the original Clause Four though). Together with many like minded active members of the time, I KNEW that Blair and his New Labour backers shared an ideological and political narrative that had more in common with the old SDP and the softer end of the Tory Party than the genuine core values of the Labour Party. I say this even whilst recognising the broad church nature of the Labour movement. I believe that history supports this view. Whilst the Labour Government certainly did some things right and did them well (Sure start for example), they also did some things that caused a great deal of harm - (extending the privatization of NHS services via the internal market, extending the use of PFI for public works, the invasion of Iraq etc). One point often missed is also the effect they had on public discourse, for example, the idea of "conditionality" . "The rights and privileges enjoyed reflect the duties and responsibilities owed" - this phrase actually affected the public narrative surrounding the benefit system, health provision, education . If you consider that one mood setting phrase; it prepared the mind set of the many to accept such things as sanctions within the benefit system, conditionality in the provision of health services - even the forcing of offenders to wear "Community Payback" lanyards whilst clearing verges etc.
Even now, Owen, despite the fact that I like Jeremy Corbyn, agree with his proposed political programme and seriously hope Labour form the next Government (because five more years of the Tories is UNTHINKABLE) - I still can not bring myself to rejoin. I am a Green - together with several other former Labour colleagues that I know of.
Keept that alternative voice out there Owen - you are doing a good job.

Oh Angela, “the only way you get in there (grammar school) is by having private tuition”. That simply isn’t true. Any child who is bright can go to a grammar school; that’s the point - any child can do it. Private tuition has nothing to do with it. I came from a very working class background (my parents didn’t own their own home) and I certainly had no private tuition, but I went to a grammar school. I feel I should add that I am a fan of this woman, she’s inspiring.

Student loans are not debts in strictest sense. They're liabilities. You don't think of the hundreds of thousands of pounds in tax you'll pay over a working lifetime as a 'debt'. It's a student tax in all but name. I would get rid of it as the entire system is basically insolvent anyway, but kids really shouldn't be put off going to university because of state provided student loans. It's nothing compared to privatised, predatory system that exists in the US.

I really want to like Angela Rayner, but I just can't get behind a lot of her statements - to me it always feel like she's mouthing someone else's ideas. Whether or not that's true, it makes her seem incredibly insincere - and that's at odds with the kind of person I imagine she probably actually is.

Why do you even ask for debate Owen? These comments are getting worse and worse. England has the worst inequality in Europe yet any policy trying to address that is immediately dismissed as unrealistic - which seems odd when our immediate neighbours can do better (the problem of fancy accountants and bankers moving capital globally is not an easy problem however). Our education system is under extreme strain with cuts hitting schools very hard (check yours here www.schoolcuts.org.uk), to the point were teachers have pupils who don't even have pencils. Higher education is one of England's greatest generators of GDP but the idea of funding them better, to promote an accessible culture of free thought, is completely lost here. The mental health crisis, that will clearly cost society much much more in the long run, hasn't been mentioned once in all the top comments. The fact that we have Angela, who dragged herself, along with her child and bipolar mother at the age of 16, out of a perfect storm of all of the above, by caring, educating and empowering people is pretty incredible if you ask me. I think she's the very sort of person who should be in politics. The people who are trying to smear her for being under qualified need to find a more productive way to spend their time - I'd like to see how they would cope in her situation. Probably just masturbate and leave pointless comments on youtube.
