    Thanks for the comments on the handwriting. I'm using an inexpensive Lamy italic calligraphy ink pen. A good book on music hand calligraphy is Music Manuscript Techniques: A Programed Approach by Paul Harder. A bit old fashioned....

    Merci for this analysis. I was so bad at music all my life I joked with people that I was born with two left ears. Now after my retirement I'm watching this and learning.

    Haha - I thought this was going to be "correcting a Bach Chorale exercise" but looking through whilst you were writing I was thinking "it's perfect". Then I realised it was Bach himself 🙈

      To be fair, even Bach does some "mistakes", intentionally or not (eg the Bass can't reach the Eb in the end)

      @@Gregggggggggg They used to : in Bach's time voices were a little lower than today. But even today some bass singers can reach the D.

    My book lists it as Cant. 180 under the title "Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele" and is in F. How come ?

    • @bkehlenb
      @bkehlenb  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Bach Chorales can be found under various publishers and numbering systems. 180 is the BWV number of the cantata. BWV is a cataloguing system of Bach's works from the 20th century: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis At this link you will find the chorale, as you said in F major: imslp.org/wiki/Schm%C3%BCcke_dich%2C_o_liebe_Seele%2C_BWV_180_(Bach%2C_Johann_Sebastian) Other collections such as the one published by Breitkopf and Härtel (1871) list it as #22 and it is in the key of Eb major. Here is a link: imslp.org/wiki/Chorale_Harmonisations%2C_BWV_1-438_(Bach%2C_Johann_Sebastian)

    No, you are perfectly incorrect. GenerallBass not functional harmony should be used to explain the "how".
    You delivery is awesome, the substance is however historically not true.,

    • @danekokojan3910
      @danekokojan3910 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What is general bass? I've heard that Bach did not conceptualize music in functional harmony. But, I still haven't learned the method he used to do so.
