I was a mounted patrol officer in a resort city. It seems that whenever people see a horse, they feel entitled to approach and touch the horse, as if it is a friendly pet. We would politely ask that they pet them on the neck or shoulder, not the head or face. Most people would oblige, but some people would claim to be “horse owners/lovers/etc.” and ignore our request. Sometimes they got bitten, and in more egregious cases, arrested. I really don’t know how those mounted guards put up with the constant harassment from tourists.
Hi kennetheavey8921 good morning, thank you for sharing your experience as a mounted patrol officer. It's unfortunate that some people may not understand the boundaries when approaching and interacting with horses. As you mentioned, it's important for the safety of both the horse and the individual to approach them in a respectful manner. Mounted guards, like the King's Guards, go through extensive training to handle such situations and maintain their composure in the face of constant attention and sometimes even harassment from tourists. They are trained to handle and manage the crowds while ensuring the safety of all involved. It's a challenging task, but their dedication and professionalism shine through as they carry out their duties. Thanks for watching my video, I hope you have an excellent Thursday! 😃
Would you be so kind to explain why to not touch the head? I learned that if you approach a horse from the side or back, it will be afraid, so you should approach from the front. Is that wrong? Also if approaching a horse, is it better to avoid eye contact or go for eye contact?
@@Sena121 In our situation, the horses that we had were not always the best behaved ones, because they were usually donated by individuals who could no longer keep them for various reasons. They were trained to do certain things in a certain way, and one of the most important things that they were trained to do was to stand still. If we had to interact with a person directly, such as to affect an arrest, the person in question would be standing next to us, just in front of our leg as we were sitting on the horse. The training was for the horse to remain still, and not to move or toss his head around. We tried to discourage people from petting their face or head, because it sometimes irritated the horse. People would also pull on the cheek pieces of the bridle, which could cause the horse to pull back violently and injure themselves or bystanders. We didn’t mind if someone wanted to touch the horse, it’s just that we tried to keep the interaction as consistent as possible so as not to make the horse nervous or anxious.

Would like to point out to those who have not had little, or no contact with horses that when a horse puts it ears back it is not happy, the further the ears go back the more unhappy they are about something and you should keep a safe distance.
They communicate by ear, body, head movements my deceased mounted horse NYC cop granddad used to say - his horse Sargent,he swore could read his mind. I believe him. ✌️
Thank you for your knowledgeable comment. I checked the information: When a horse's ears are forward, the horse is alert, paying attention and, or, is interested in what's in front of him~her. When a horse's ears are pinned back, close to the neck, it is angry and about to bite, or kick.' It's always good to read up on procedures, and what to expect, beforehand, when visiting places of interest, even with the public warning signs, at the location.
Love how the horse turns his head as if to say ‘I did that - the sign says I may bite, so I did.” The guard also seemed totally unimpressed by her histrionics. She invaded the horse’s space, ignored the warning signs (from the horse as well as the notice on the wall) so the horse took assertive action. If her play acting thought it would earn her a bit of compensation for her her terrible trauma she’s in for a disappointment. Those signs aren’t just warnings - they’re disclaimers. If they chose to ignore them it’s their look out. Besides, bringing a law suit against a horse wouldn’t have much chance of success. It’s a hard, and painful, lesson to learn - but one she won’t forget in a hurry. Horse 1 - Tourist 0 - and I’m 100% team horse. By the way - loved the little one blowing a kiss to the horse. But where were her parents? Toddlers can be as unpredictable as horses.
@@battles146 Arnie’s a star for that. He’s so patient will the little ones - but makes sure to have a nip at their parents for being so dumb. Some have no concept of the damage a horse can do if it means business. If you take the average weight of a 17hh Irish draught horse of around 800/850 kg, add the weight of the rider plus around 25-30kg for the tack, saddle and the guard’s uniform and not forgetting those iron shod hooves - v - a squishy toddler it’s not rocket science as to which would come off worse.

Ormonde is my favorite of all the horses. He is a no-nonsense, do not get in my space, I have dealt with far too many fools type of horse. Always entertaining to watch.
I was bitten by a horse as a child, yes it hurt and I had a huge bruise, all of which I had to conceal from my mother as we werent supposed to be in the field. No time for drama 😂
Love this horse!!! He is mad, personal space, that’s all he wants. Wouldn’t it be great if the horses were trained to bite people, then the tourists wouldn’t dare come close without severe consequences. I also love that the guard doesn’t care either. Well done, well done! ❤
In some way they are being taught to do that. Whenever a tourist comes too close or grabs the reins, the guard shouts and even kicks the horse forward (rightly so!). I can only imagine how annoying/startling it must be for the horse, so a smart horse will do the chasing away itself instead. That way he can control the events. 😊 This is a clever horse!
I don't think getting close was aa much of an issue as the way she did it! With her back to him & too close! Established no greeting, just gave him her back! Asking for a corrective nip in his world ❤
what do you mean, the guard doesn't care, he's not allowed to do anything, the signs say it all, there's nothing he can do about it, he's on duty the tourists can read, if they decide to ignore the signs, & get toi close to the horse, they can't complain, & they 'll get no joy, if they try to sue, hope she learned the lesson, follow the rules, they're 'there for a reason, 😮Amen!
I had one horse that liked to nip, especially from behind when he was on a lead rein, got me a few times on the back and shoulders. Sometimes it would leave a nice bruise. Never any need for that overreaction thought. Perhaps she is a footballer.
I’ve had the same thing and learned to stay at least a necks reach from back legs and neck unless when grooming. Just humming, whistling softly or talking as if they understand is beneficial to animals of all types. Dad once had goldfish which, I swear, communicated with him when he talked to them.
I liked the lady at 2:30 who reassuringly approached the horse head-on, gave it a respectful hand to sniff without invading its space, and then took a photo of the horse and rider WITHOUT PUTTING HERSELF IN THE PICTURE! Someone who clearly likes and appreciates horses. Not all of the tourists are awful.

That is what I said it's there own fault.
Any animal in the. world always show warning signs that say do not approach me , except. crocodiles and alligators , as you say ears back don't. come near me.
One pathetic drama queen. He didn't make her bleed!
He barely touched her, and it looked more like a tap than a bite anyway.
Still hurts like hell when they nip you with their teeth. I know first hand ..
@@monicawarner4091He gave her a little bit more than a nip! He full on gave her a tasty warning bite! Buy not a bad 1! He wasn't being mean, just teaching her a lesson!
she didn't bleed...externally
Were you there?
I love this horse! He keeps everyone in line 😅 get to close BITE! act the fool BITE! disrespect the Kings horse BITE!! 😂😂😂😂
Got to love Ormonde here.
Walking backwards to a horse is the most stupid thing the woman does.
Is that Ormande? I love the way the Guard keeps a stone-face during the whole situation. You just know he can't wait to get back to the stable with "He got another one!"
Your comment on my video made my day! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
That horse just took a bite out of entitlement! I can't stop laughing :-)
OMG 😂. she played that up well. Should be on the stage
Just loved the way the horse stood there looking like butter wouldn't melt!! 😀😀😀
What a perfect horse, makes his own stay away line 😂😂😂❤
Yes ,a perfect horse 🥰🤩stupid humans have to stay away !!!
I am not a horse person at all, but I could totally tell what that horse was trying to say. Stand back, go away, don’t stand here, don’t stand there. The body language was easy to recognize. Interesting.
Your comment on my video made my day! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I shouldn't be saying this, but thanks for the bite. I love you! !
That woman deserves an Oscar, what a performance!! 🤣
Just wanted to say a huge thank you, for leaving a comment on my video! Your support encourages me to keep producing high-quality content. 🙏 Have a wonderful Saturday! 😀
Not an Oscar..... a rotten tomato
Not only is the horse happy, we are absolutely thrilled to bits . I’ll bet the rider gives his horse an apple tonight and will draw almighty guffaws from his fellow soldiers whenever he tells that excellent story .
Many thanks, for leaving such a thoughtful comment on my video! I hope you have an excellent Saturday! 😃
I absolutely loved it, was hoping she peed her pants.
Horse barely had its mouth on her.
Acting is that good that she didn't even expose her bare skin while showing all the family an she hoped all public were watching
@@funches897 I proper laughed out loud at your comment, brilliant. 😂
Fantastic Horse who definitely knows how to handle the crowds and demand these Tourists give him the and space and Respect that he Deserves 👏👏👏
The horse stands there, eyes forward "It wasn't me"
My favorite horse ormonde he 💗 his personal space
If you ignore widely written warnings, often only the healing power of “Ouch” will help!
A big thank you, for taking the time to leave a comment! I value your feedback and am glad to have you as part of my community. 🙏 Hope you have an excellent Monday! 😀 🙌
She didn't greet him, but immediately gave him her back! Actions asking for a lesson in horse etiquette!
A lawsuit against a horse 😂
@@BaronessFahrenheit We have seen dumber 🤣😂
It’s the way the horse was eyeballing the next woman. It was looking at her like she was a lunch option 😂😂😂
Horse has feelings too. So be kind people,❤
Ormonde’s doing a great job ⭐️🥰

I appreciate this poor horse still has healthy boundaries, and let's people know when he's had enough, and to get out of his space. The signs people!... read them!
I don’t understand why people think that this is funny! No respect! It’s not funny to ignore the horse when he is clearly not wanting your attention!! Get a life people and don’t mistreat animals!
Drama queen! Best laugh i had all day
Amo a los caballos..son muy inteligente y nobles.. aprenden todo lo que un humano le pueda enseñar!! Argentina 👏
Love that horse!
Hilarious that the next woman, having seen the first one get bitten for taking no account of the horse's needs, still tried to inch closer while the horse bared his teeth and flattened his ears at her! Great photo to show her friends - look at me annoying the heck out of a long-suffering animal. 🤣
Your comment on my video made my day! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Oh dear oh dear, looks like she didn't read the sign,
One up for the horse 👍
This is hilarious, she's acting like the horse bit her arm off 🙄
🤣🤣🤣🤣
The accuracy of that horse - awesome!
Thank you for commenting on my video!
So happy the horse is OK 😊

😂😂
I absolutely love these black uniforms with these helmets. So debonair. I really like this King's Guard; so handsome and he's genuinely a nice man.
your not looking at just one Soldier the Horse is a Soldier too ..PLEASE SHOW THEM THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're absolutely right! I couldn't agree more. Both the soldiers and the horses deserve our utmost respect and appreciation. They work together as a team, and their contributions should never be overlooked. It's important to acknowledge and honour the efforts and dedication of both the human soldiers and their equine counterparts. Thank you for emphasizing the respect they deserve! Hope you have a fantastic Saturday! 😃
Serves her right dont have any sympathy for her. Can she not read the sign
The horse keeps trying to establish its space but people aren't listening
I ❤️ Ormonde! He never disappoints! They should put a special sign up saying “This is Ormonde. Approach with caution”.
Guard is there to protect the Kings household not the tourists
In some way they are being taught to do that. Whenever a tourist comes too close or grabs the reins, the guard shouts and even kicks the horse forward (rightly so!). I can only imagine how annoying/startling it must be for the horse, so a smart horse will do the chasing away itself instead. That way he can control the events. 😊 This is a clever horse!
I don't think getting close was aa much of an issue as the way she did it! With her back to him & too close! Established no greeting, just gave him her back! Asking for a corrective nip in his world ❤
what do you mean, the guard doesn't care, he's not allowed to do anything, the signs say it all, there's nothing he can do about it, he's on duty the tourists
can read, if they decide to ignore the signs, & get toi close to the horse, they can't complain, & they 'll get no joy, if they try to sue, hope she learned the lesson, follow the rules, they're 'there for a reason, 😮Amen!
In Medieval days, horses WERE trained to bite and trample the enemy. It's an art that seems sadly to have been forgotten!
I like this horse!😅
8nk he's been taking lessons from Arnie.
Yes Ormond is a beautiful and clever horse. It must be very stressful for him dealing with these tourists.
Finally a horse that stood up for itself
I had one horse that liked to nip, especially from behind when he was on a lead rein, got me a few times on the back and shoulders. Sometimes it would leave a nice bruise. Never any need for that overreaction thought. Perhaps she is a footballer.
😂😂😂 ditto
I’ve had the same thing and learned to stay at least a necks reach from back legs and neck unless when grooming. Just humming, whistling softly or talking as if they understand is beneficial to animals of all types. Dad once had goldfish which, I swear, communicated with him when he talked to them.
Ormonde is giving out souvenirs. Teeth marks.
Love that horse. May he bite many more of his tormentors.
Ormonde.
Grandissimo.
Punisci una maleducata per educare cento!❤❤❤❤
A man walking by obscured the actual bite but golly what a drama queen that woman was.
exactly, then she bends over trying to remember it was her arm not her back,.holds her arm..the lovely Horse didn't even have a second with her sweater covered arm..
Arnie taught this one very well
Yes people, the sign says I may bite. Read the sign people😂😂 It was a nibble 😊 and yes, I've been around horse's all my life and I've been biten due to my own stupidity 🙃 God bless these beauties ❤️ and the wonderful guardsmen too😊

The first girl who got bit was soooo dramatic that horse really didn't even bite her she doesn't know what get bit by a horse actually feels like
"I'm watching you young man!" said the horse to the boy @ 8:56.
This is the COOLEST horse in the stable. I know him by the marking on his face .Stay away from me ! I won’t tolerate you in my space .
Love that horse!!
I had a horse that was just like that. He was my ❤ but he was mean to most people. We did Endurance rides and he was so great.
That's wonderful to hear! Horses can have such unique personalities, and it's amazing when you find a special connection with them. Endurance rides can be so rewarding and it's great to hear that your horse was a reliable partner during those rides. They truly are magnificent animals. Thanks for sharing your experience! I wish you an excellent Saturday! 😃👍
Keep your distance and be respectful!! No need to get so close especially if you heed what the sign says!!
Good for her now she and others will give respect to the guards and horses! Stay your distance!! Don’t get too close to them period!! They are not toys!!
Totally crazy how many people kept getting close to the horse while he was snapping at everyone. 🤦🏼♀️
They shouldn't be allowed to even touch the horse. Respect for the guards ❤❤❤
The way the guard looks at her after the bit 😂
Tourist ,please remember you are on the horse's patch, not the other way around, if it bites you then it's hard cheese, the sign clearly states that horses may bite, stand near at your own risk.
I'm glad they added the don't touch the rein.
Your comment on my video made my day! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Way to go horse. Read the sign lady.
Now that horse knows what to do when he is fed up😅! I am totally shocked that this hasn't happened more often!
So dramatic 😮
Какая умница лошадка
These magnificent horses are working. Stand back and admire but don't invade their space
Read the sign. Can't expect the guard to verbally warn each person about the horse. At the end of the day....HE'D be hoarse! 😂
Excellent acting skills on that drama queen (blue sweater, striped shirt). I thought she was a goner, for sure!
So did I. The blood just poured out onto the pavement as her arm hung off!!
@@Sandy-n4n 🤣🤣
@@Sandy-n4n 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The sign clearly says he may bite. Ears are pinned back and his body language should be pretty clear to just about anyone. The guard doesn’t bother to try and stop the crazy people!
Adoro esse cavalo ele realmante impõe respeito .e o lugar dele
People disregard the horse's warning signals; you can tell when he's becoming clearly agitated and people keep touching and petting him. All animals need to be treated with respect.
