Hi Nils, any advice how to stay stable once bearing away? On that downwind course you’re faster than the waves and you obviously go over them (while standing right above your gear, which still is somewhat uncomfortable to me). I have had several times that the board would catch a wave with the windward rail which got me out of balance (and I tend to get into a defensive stance trying to avoid catapults, but by that I’m killing the speed). Any special tips, of is is “ just go for it” (and hope for the best ;-). Thanks for all the effort you punt into these video’s and thanks to the all our windsurfing friends who comment on these video’s helping each other. What a fantastic sport it is to us all!
Nils. You are so important for my 58 y.o. windsurfer practice! So many thanks! Please keep. explaining your windsurf technic . It's really important for me! Thanks . Regards from Lisboa
I did 30.2 knots yesterday on my old Isonic 122 with a 32 weed fin and a 7.3 Duotone S-pace. Totally out of control in harsh chop just stepping the pedal and hoping for the best. The biggest challenge is not really equipment, I have done + 30 knots on wave sails and freeride boards. The biggest challenge is to find a spot, where you have plenty of strong wind in the right direction - and NO chop or waves. All the best Per - Denmark
Absolutely fantastic content! All your tutorials are so worthwhile. I hit my 30+ on a medium slalom board and in the right circumstances can indeed replicate. Now it's time to hit 35+ but I need a small slalom board for that. After achieving that I might consider a speed board.
My first 30kts, I reached with an over 30 years old 88l Board with a rondom GFK fin. The rigg was as old as the board. It felt like racing with an oldtimer 150km/h and the whole car is rattling. haha
Nice tutorial! Maybe one thing to add, which isn’t to technical, is having the right amount of downhaul. I see al lot of people with just not enough downhaul, this makes te sail heavy and inefficient with the result of slowing you down. So crank that downhaul!
Excellent advice on an excellent subject. Interestingly I just bought a smaller fin for my Fox105 specifically to be able to go faster. The board is 65cm wide, and I got a 32cm fin. I can sometimes get just over 30knots, I think I'll do better using some of the technique you are talking about here. Thank you for the great advice!!
Suuuuper helpful! I have been on the right track with nearly all that you presented. Can't wait to get back in the water in a month or so. I feel I may be on too big a sail for my weight and board size so will be looking to get a good slalom sail around 6.2.
Hi Nils, how about a tutorial on helping older windsurfers go fast. Seems like most of the younger folks have transitioned to kiting. Right now I'm iceboating with my DN60. I'm 60.
This was incredibly good advice, thanks! Finally a how-to for beginners :) I'm a serial sheeter but I'll try the different grip asap, hopefully that will do the trick ;) one thing: could you maybe include a little arrow indicating the direction the wind is coming from in your videos? Esp in 360 view I am not always certain of the angle you're surfing on
Nice tutorial, nice goal for this year :) Now i need some big balls to go and do that 🤣28 knots is my fastest now on the big board :) Need to get some confidence on my medium board :)
That was very useful ! How much do you think weight affects your top speed ? I'm 58kg, (7m sail and 90l board) and i really feel i miss some weight to go really fast. I can reach around 27/28 knots in 20 knots of wind, but i need almost 25knots to go past 30. I also felt i missed some lift with a S1 slam, just got an ERD carbon fin, which i'm stoked to try :D
weight is a huge factor, for example i will probably never be able to be as fast as the 2m 100kg Speedguys, so better to compare yourself to others in your weight class! on the bright side you will be able to go onto smaller equipment much quicker! I had the S1 Slam many years back, and yeah it does not give good lift ;) however once you go down that journey prepare to spend a lot of money on carbon fins ;)
I honestly don't know, I use Epidemicsounds and just look for my music there for YT, usually looking for the right mood of the music to fit together with the action ;)
7 cambers??? i guess that sail has a sweetspot but will be superdifficult in overpowered conditions no? however great speed with that, would be cool to take a couple of my dads antique boards on a speedspot sometimes and see how fast i can go on those!
@@WindsurfingNils definitely try it. In max speed the old boards aren't too far off from modern boards just harder to control due to length.. and as far as overpowered sailing: hook in and hold on for dear life 😂😂

Me too !! I'm looking forward to the next "speedsurfing-guide"-video !!

small slalomboard should be good for that, or look into bigger speedboards (~52-56cm) they feel a lot like slalomboard as well!
@@WindsurfingNils, I lack flat water conditions. I'll take it step by step :)

i went last summer on an old sunset race (55cm wide 27cm long) on my lake and did 31,7 knots, felt like 40 for sure :D

Very true, prob. I use 1cm more downhaul compared to what most slalom guys use.

It's just a rule of thumb, but works quite good, for slalom i add 1-2cm ;)
@@WindsurfingNils I think it is a good rule of thumb for a start point at least. All I need now is some wind to test the theories!!
Thanks for sharing this. Last year I scored 27 knots at Garda Lake

I'll get onto that in 33 years when I'm 60 🤙😅
Trust me, that time goes by faster than you think.

would be kind of har to set up correctly, but would be cool ;)
Great content and awsome "old" footage!

Finaly did the 30 Kn :D on my Local Lake with Isonic 80 and nxc 7.5 didnt thought i get it 1st time with my bigger setup. 🚀 next Goal 60 Km/h
Nice, Congrats, there is always a next target in sight, makes it so addictive ;)
This is just great stuff!
Great explained 👍 what watch or measure tool are you using for measuring the speed seriously?
TNX greets from Tirol
gt-31, for official purposes you need any device that records with Doppler (GT-31, GW 60, Motion, Coros)
That was very useful !

@@WindsurfingNils Yeahh carbon quickly empties your wallet !! lol
I am cycling aswell, 2 very expensive hobbies !
Thanks for the tips for speed :)
I am struggling around the same limitations. I am light and short and have a 7.3 sail on a 95l board.
Ace video very very good
First comment so i am a speed follower
Loved the music at the end! Who is it?
I honestly don't know, I use Epidemicsounds and just look for my music there for YT, usually looking for the right mood of the music to fit together with the action ;)
Looking for the same on foiling speeds as well :D
Thanks for that: been looking to get over 30kts for ages..
good luck with you journey mate :)
keep it coming - I am soaking it up :-)
35kts on oldskool gear; f2 thommen 285 (110L 51wide) and NP VX3 6.3 (7 battens 7 cambers) you dont necessarily need new gear to be fast 🤙

Could you give some technique for speed sailing in a more choppy condition
good idea ;)
@@WindsurfingNils Yeah, would love that!
I'd like this too. And also examples of what is fast in choppy conditions. I sail a coastal lake, its not flat but its not open ocean either.
really nice guide. but please watch the sound levels
I already turned the music down -3db, maybe next time -5 ;)
can one for 30 knots on foil?
Biggest key to break 30 kts: wind. Trying to break 30 in 15 kts of wind is not going to happen. Rig big on the day that looks scary.
yes, 18-25 would be ideal for that i think...
Bearing off this much ... So much uphill climbing the rest of the afternoon.
Not with the right setup, one downwind run, one run back up 🤙
@@WindsurfingNils depending on the conditions.
