For large Country like India it is foolish to think that we can develop only by service sector. Only rich people will benefit by that for poverty elimination we need manufacturing sector to grow exponentially.

I don't think the govt needs to get invested in service sector that much as the investment size and barriers can be easily handled by private sector.
If manufacturing in India is inefficient it makes sense to focus on critical products like semi conductors and high tech products which are sensitive for us during a war situation instead of being dependent on China. The goal should be to clear out the imbalance between the share of high value manufacturing and services sector in our economy.

Well this would have worked in a normal country. Once we performed overbreeding and overpopulating there is no way you can employ all these people in service sector which produces much less jobs than manufacturing. So, focusing only on service sector will result in a lot of people still remaining unemployed. So, this is a matter of necessity.

From low value added to High value added !!! ….. there shouldn’t be any apparent issues I guess. Dump PLI and rechannelise that fund etc… very good. But the moment that’s done….theoretically, then these same set of Gyan givers will jump up and write a few more books on how the Policymakers are overlooking the job creation capabilities of those low value added sectors and instead aping the Developed Countries’ Economic models…And the same old hash about free speech, giving space to contrarians. Fortunately, the migratory birds do not spend much time in the warmer pastures, and soon flock back to their secular Nests, where apparently there’re no or less takers for their wisdom.

Let’s create jobs on entire curve so we are not dependent on any country. World is realizing what havoc their dependency on chip manufacturing in Taiwan created. Manufacturing locally also helps with bridging trade and current account deficit which in turn helps with stable Rupee. I used to respect Raghuram Rajan a lot. However, either he is speaking on behalf of congress or plain wrong. leaving China, there are countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh which can provide a base for manufacturing - we need to make use of our GDP strength to help build manufacturing industry - not to forget the knowledge transfer and parallel ecosystem of similar products that can be produced to served local population. India has already been doing well in services sector but we need to create products to be manufactured to be not bottlenecked if an unfortunate global scenario is created- case in point oil and gas dependency- we need renewable energy creation to avoid dependency on OPEC and West.

Same with chinese compony like byd and many more will be leading auto industries but they started with manufacturing now they will be leading the high end market and they have expertise in battery production . Great pushback Latha, you politely saw through their hidden agenda. Seems, one, he wants Indian Govt to spend public money on making high end coders, who can then be airlifted out of India by West and value taken out of India’s economy. Second, they want less manufacturing to be moved out of China to India. India needs to be a manufacturing country, small and large, as All Developed countries once were. They seem to want strings of Indian service industry to be in the hands of their West handlers. India has 42% agricultural workers who cannot code for Tesla or Apple, nor their 5 generations, but need small manufacturing jobs.

Protectionism is always bad (unless there are some Supply chain security risk).
Other than that, Import Duety should be 0% on all stuff.
But I disagree with him on manufacturing.
Yeah, we should try to produce such things which has high value addition.
(like Chip design, Patents, or even other services like programming etc)
But the problem is, not everyone is skilled enough to work on such Induistries.
There are huge amount of surplus labour which work in Agriculture sector.
If we could pull that labour and employ them into let say Drug Research, that would have been great.
But we can't because they are not skilled enough.
So for them Manufacturing job even thou is low value addition is greater than what they can earn out of Agriculture.
Yes, in next generation if we could employ most of the people in High value addition that would be great.
But for medium term there is a need for some manufacturing jobs for pulling surplus labour from Agriculture sector.

This same dude was baffling about India won't be growing more than 5, we Indians proved him wrong and we will prove these elite commies wrong once again when our manufacturing reach upward of 30% of our economy by 2030😊

Precisely we need to the opposite of what Mr. Rajan prescribes .... I am sure the Chinese are upset if India becomes low skilled jobs due to sheer magnitude of the no of these jobs and what that would do the 1.5bn population.

And leftist loonies are awaiting failure of Indian growth story - sadly not happening though. Gloom predictors like him will obviously be right once in a while. Remember, he also predicated a lot for the last 5 years or so, being proved wrong every single time. A fluke can go right for anyone - and he has studied economics so being right once is no big deal.

He is a great great economist....agreed.
But right now he is working as a deep state agent of the American govt.
      His job:
      1. Do a regime change in India. Bring a puppet govt of usa in power.
      2. Spread econmical propaganda, so that India does not go for semi conductor manufacturing. China is already challenging USA with own chips. USA does not want a second competitor.
A good economist does not mean that he also needs to be a true patriot or ethically correct too.....

Don't act to criticize Congress and praise Rajan in the same breath.
That does not work and you get exposed.
If u r a Congress supporter and TMC agent say that openly.
