  • Plant sales have seen a boom on both sides of the Atlantic since the start of coronavirus quarantine measures. Many are hearing the call of the wild for the first time and have responded by bringing the outdoors in. But before Swiss Cheese plants, succulents and aloes started to trend on Instagram, plant and interior stylist Hilton Carter became a household name with a remarkable collection of 300 houseplants in his home and studio in Baltimore...
    To find out Carter's suggestions for common houseplant questions, continue reading on Nowness.com or the app: o6g7.app.link/...

    Sometimes, on a beautiful day, I’ll bring all of my plants outside to enjoy the weather and get fresh air. Or during a summer rain I’ll take them all out for a fresh shower.

    So good to see, that l am not the only one who names their plants. I also talk and touch them. They just love it, and show it, by how well they flourish. Naming them, gives them a identity, after all they are living things. Beautiful and decorative.

    I have a money plant in a pot since 1993 and I call her mercy .
    Now am out in another country for 6 months . Hope she is doing fine at my place in my hometown.
    She has taken little or no maintenance but been potted in the oldest normal pot. I jus accidentally came across this video and there are few plants I name them and it builds beautiful relationship.

    I love my plants, but with watering, fertilizing, dusting, dealing with infestations, etc.... this must be a full-time job.

    • @Rubiecat
      @Rubiecat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      There are ways to make handling a lot of plants easier ! You can group plants that require similar care: if they are of similar size and getting the same amount of light just check the soil of one and water them all based on that. I do that for my succulents, Prayer plants, and Pothos/Philodendrons/Syngonium. Fittonias and Scindapsus will visibly tell you when they're thirsty so no need to waste time checking. Same for a lot of plants ! (hedera helix, pilea...)
      For fertilizing: simply put 1cm of a mix of compost and wormcast on top of your soil every 6 month. There you go you've saved a lot of time !
      Dust isn't as terrible for plants as we think it is so if you really don't have time to clean it can wait !
      And when it comes to pests if you don't overwater you should be fine ! I'd recommend adding AT LEAST 3 to 5 days to recommendations you can generally read on the internet, they tend to be only good for hot and sunny environments.
      The only plants that are TRULY time consuming (and pests baits as well) are the aromatic plants or vegetables because not watering them on time is not an option if you want to eat good food.

    I love your video. I am new to plant ownership and loving the process. I went from 3 to 12. I always thought that I could not keep them alive. I talk and sing to them. I am trying to learn, without panic, how much to water and how often. The air quality in my home has noticeably improved. After watching you, I have decided to go plant shopping. I have a question; what do you use to clean your leaves and how often do you clean them?

    Also Hilton is very lucky that he's gifted with this space with tall ceilings and tall windows and beautiful textured walls. The tall ceilings really ease the claustrophobia in a room crowded with plants.. Stylistically, they really work. What I'm trying to say is that not everyone can pull off the indoor jungle tastefully.

    There is absolutely nothing wrong with you. My apartment was my oasis, my sanctuary. And I've always had a lot of plants. The sunlight , the air changed my mood as soon as I stepped inside. I miss that apartment. Now I'm working on having a food forest. Our ancestors started in a garden. Why are we surprised that we need plants in our lives and feel better when we are in that environment?

    wooow. I loove your place. My mom is exactly the same like you, surrounded by milions of plants. I never understood it, until now. And I also started to surround myself with beautiful plants

    This is a wonderful video and it made me think a lot about how plants create a comforting space for me. Looking at dormant plants in my house through the colder months brings a comforting sense to my heart, as someone who is very impacted emotionally by season changes (especially from fall to winter). Watching their life cycle, I remember that everything is okay and that life keeps moving forward.
