  • An elevator boy (Frankie Darro) and his detective brother solve mob-related murders.
    Mantan Moreland (September 3, 1902 - September 28, 1973) was an American actor and comedian most popular in the 1930s and 1940s.
    Monogram Pictures signed Moreland to appear opposite Frankie Darro in the studio's popular action pictures. Moreland, with his bulging eyes and cackling laugh, quickly became a favorite supporting player in Hollywood movies. He is perhaps best known for his role as chauffeur Birmingham Brown in Monogram's Charlie Chan series.[3] At the height of his career, Moreland received steady work from major film studios, as well as from independent producers who starred Moreland in low-budget, all-black-cast comedies. - wikipedia

    I love all these old movies especially Mandan Moreland, he’s in a class of his own. I don’t think some of those productions would of made it without him!

    Mantan Moreland was my cousin. I was wondering if he had any children. My mother Mildred Elizabeth Moreland mentioned he was a Hollywood star, when we were growing up but we never met him. I wish I knew if he had children. I'd love to connect with someone. Does he have a STAR on HOLLYWOOD's walk of fame? He should!

    Love Mantan but people forget just how much chemistry he had with Frankie Darro . Darro was a really solid actor who served his country and contracted Malaria! He was too short to be considered a leading man but for that time period he was smooth!

    Mantan was the man in black comedy in the 40s, but he made some all black comedies during that time where he is WAY rawer and looser than he was in the Frankie Darro and Charlie Chan films, such as "Lucky Ghost" (1941), Two Gun Man from Harlem (1938, with Stymie Beard of the Little Rascals), and "Tall Tan & Terrific" (1946), which as far as I know are the only ones of this type that still exist. There are some others that I presume are lost, such as "Up Jumped the Devil," "Mantan for Mayor," "Professor Creeps," and "Mr. Washington Goes to Town." I hope someone finds this stuff.

    He was a wel-rounded actor...to kow-tow to the white race and act the buffoon in films took real acting and a very hard outer shell allowing, him to peservere in his craft, while depicting absolute comedic brilliance!!!

    • @susanknight4841
      @susanknight4841 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mantan Moreland is always great value. He makes us laugh out loud, with his fantastic comic timing and natural delivery of even the silliest lines - but we always laugh with him, never at him, and see him not as a buffoon but a really smart sidekick! I doubt these films would pass the P.C. test today.

They also stereotyped the cops as dumb and inept and usually Irish, the press as unprofessional and unscrupulous (maybe today), hotel managers as simpering and effeminate, country people as bumpkins, young women as airheads, the Irish as hot tempered drunks, waitresses as gum chewing wisecrackers and the list goes on. At least they opened the door for blacks and other minorities to get a start in movies.
