- Colorado Trail Segment 24 is one of the scariest, yet most amazingly beautiful segments of the trail. You start with a hike through sheep pastures, while keeping an eye out for the Great Pyrenees that guard them. The CDT splits from the CT and you ascend up and over the Continental Divide once again before taking a huge descent with 28 switchbacks down through the Elk Creek Drainage area to the Animas River. The segment ends with another huge climb back up to Molas Pass.

Thank you for another great episode! The avalanche was fresh in 2019, highly discouraged at the time, we opted for the alternate, which was surprisingly amazing and beautiful. Can't wait to get back and do this segment again. Been looking at maps to put together some type of loop out of Silverton.
That sounds awesome! I watch your video on this segment and you took the bike route on the Jeep road? I actually ended up accidentally taking another Trail (for a mile or so) around mile 5.6, so definitely interested in what loop you put together.
@@GIRLplusDOGAdventures That's the one, the bike route is the official alternate, a rough and steep jeep road. There are definitely other trails in the area, we're anxious to get back!

It’d also be easy to take the CDT and make a loop using the Creede cutoff

@@Ponchosadventures I would say Breck and Creede or Lake City, then Silverton. Breck is super easy as the TH is right on the free bus line (no hitch needed) and it has all the amenities plus a good old mining town downtown. I also ski so I have a bias for Breck since it's one of my favorite ski towns too. Creede or Lake City will also be old mining towns with lots of charm, but LC will require a hitch (easy off of Spring Creek pass TH) and Creede you'll need call a shuttle (Lori-$20 or 40 depending on where you get picked up). But I absolutely LOVE Creede. I didn't do a zero in Silverton since I had already been there a couple times on other road trips, but it'll have a similar vibe.
If the CTF ever issues an official CT Soundtrack, your Switchback Song needs to be on it!
