  • Coral Reefs Impacted Globally Due To "Largest" Bleaching Event
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the United States, has said that the world is experiencing the biggest coral bleaching event ever recorded. Since February 2023, 77% of the world’s coral reefs have been affected by rising ocean temperatures caused by climate change. Coral bleaching takes place when they expel the colourful algae present in their tissues. Without the algae, the corals become pale and vulnerable to starvation and disease. This is the fourth time when a major bleaching event has taken place since 1998. It’s worse than the last one between 2014 and 2017, which affected about 66% of reefs. However, the NOAA hasn't called this coral bleaching the "worst" yet, even though it has affected reefs in 74 countries.
