I just love Jewels. They are so whispy in the gardens. I'm in zone 5 and brought mine in to overwinter and it did fine. It is quite large now so might try cuttings this year. Thanks Gramma from another Meme!
I was looking for information on how to germinate Jewels of Opar and some seconds of looking at your face were enough to make me subscribe to your channel!
Thank you for this video! I appreciate all the information on this flower. Thank you for letting us know about the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, because I live in Phoenix AZ and I found so many great hot weather unique plants to try growing in my garden on their website. Can't wait to see an update when they flower and give the pretty seed stems!
I have noticed this plant for a couple of years seeing it growing wild at the back of my house. I am just finding out what it is. Now I will make sure to dig up some and put it into my herb garden or in a pot.
Enjoyed the video. I ran onto this plant around ten years ago too at a local nursery and snapped it up having no idea it was edible. it self sowed for a couple years until I got into the bed it was in and did some renovating. I've been meaning to get more of it ever since. Those bright chartrues leaves are such a beautiful color and really set off the color of their tiny flowers. It is an enchanting plant and one I have been meaning to grow again. I'll have to check a couple western sources to see if I can get seeds.
I checked with floretflowers.com and found it - jewels of opar. Here's their blurb from their Facebook page: Floret is a flower farm and seed company located in Washington's Skagit Valley. Hello from Sweden! I just got this plant today, never knew about it previously and I fell in love with it at first sight, its so dainty. Amazing its also edible!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us!!! I am growing these from seed for the first time to use the seed pods in arrangements. But I was worried about how chartreuse the seedlings were! (Overwatering???) Thanks for putting my mind to rest. You seem like the exact friend I'd love to wander through the garden with and talk plants. :) Have a wonderful day.
One of my grandmothers names was rose she passed about 2022, my other grandmother was all about herbs as medicine and wild edible plants she passed in 2012, I have this plant keeps coming out every year in different places I’ve got a ton of flowers and seeds this year so I’m going to save them and spread them around my yard and to family
I have a community plant and seed exchange stand and someone left one of these at my stand labeled “baby’s breath.” I’m excited to grow it and it’s nice it reseeds easily.
Hey sweet lady What is the purple flower above the Jewels of Opar, spinach substitute? I too have never seen this flower. My spinach is almost done for the summer. I want some of yours please. I already have many of the seeds you gave me ripening into tummy's and beautiful herbs!! I miss seeing you at our Gathering. Hopefully next yr!! Robin
Hi Robin! I missed seeing you this spring too. The only thing flowering in that bed right now is Spiderwort (Tradescantia).Without going back and watching the video, that would be my guess. I'm pretty sure Southern Exposure still has the Jewels of Opar (Talinum paniculatum) seeds in stock. The ones in my garden came back from last year's self-sowing, so I don't have any.
Don't ask me. I have no idea. When I heard the name of this plant it sounded so familiar I had to check to see why, so I Googled it, of course. When I saw the reference to Tarzan, I remembered having seen that movie many years ago.
Yes it will survive the cold no problem. The plant grows a thick tuberous root system. It will handle temps down to freezing, & die back when below freezing... but will resprout in spring. The plant is extremely drought tolerant too. Again, it will die back to the roots, & remain dormant until it gets water.
HA HA HA 🤣🤣🤣🤣 You actually bought this? I got thousands of these plants growing everywhere This plant does grow like a weed. It all started with 1 growing with my Bird of Paradise, & in 1 season the plants have spread all over my greenhouse & property. This is a tropical perennial, that grows a tuberous root like carrots. In the winter the plant dies back down to the roots & resprouts in spring. The seeds germinate everywhere in everything. I don't have a single potted plant that doesn't have one of these growing in it. The plant is also extremely easy to grow from cuttings.

This was super helpful! I wouldn't have thought those leaves were anything else than generic plain grass

Me too, hit that like & subscribe button faster than a gazelle 👌😂🌸 Thanks for sharing Gramma Rose 🌱🙏
They are also called American ginseng and my father uses it to make tea. Thank you for sharing your garden with us.
Thanks for sharing!!
Does he make a tea from the root or leaves?
@@m.gilbert1176 Eat the leaves and make tea with the root. It is know as earth ginseng or ground ginseng in Asia.
Thanks for the video! You are amazing!!
You are so welcome!

I am in zone 8A. Is this plant able to handle cold weather around 15F?
I am also ZONE 8A in GA. I read it is a tender perenial in our Plant Zone.
