  • On this day in 1971, shooting began on the DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER pre-credits sequence in which Bond (Sean Connery) kills the fake Blofeld (Charles Gray) in a mudbath. The mud was actually made from mashed potatoes. Production Designer Ken Adam said, “After 24 hours those mashed potatoes began to smell, and the smell became unbearable. The whole stage smelled of it.”

I will never understand the distaste for this film. I love Connery, Charles Gray, the story, the soundtrack, and the action. I understand that coming from Majesty's makes it hard to compare but for me it's a nice transition.
My head cannon is Bond spent his "Holiday" tracking down Blofield here which turns out to be a decoy. I believe every Blofield in the film is in fact a decoy. FYEO shows the real him still injured and that’s when Bond truly gets his revenge for Tracey
I do wish Laznby came back (Though Connery still did great for me) and I wish there was some more gun action in the film but as it stands, I still love the film very much.
No nostalgia attached for me either as I had already seen Casino Royale, Skyfall, Brosnan's first three, and all of Connery's films at the time. With all that competition and comparison I still love it.
