I’ve had my Silvertone for ages, but it was destroyed by Delta so I used their Delta Tape for the patch - haha.
I sent a photograph of this to the rather wonderful Scott Baxendale who re-manufactures Harmony’s and Silvertone’s. Scott does these beautiful conversions where he takes off the top and puts brand new struts and bracing in. He can take a guitar that sounds dull and turn it into one that has a more rounded and sophisticated tone but still sounding absolutely beautiful.
So we are sending him my Silvertone and he’s going to work his magic on it. Luckily for us, they were kind enough to film their re-manufacturing process!

A lovely result. More than a restoration, it really has been enhanced with a new fret board, the tail piece is gone, new tuners, scalloped X brace. Clearly, a lot of attention to detail went into the work. This one sounds like it will record well.

How an acoustic guitar records and sounds has been my mission since I started in 1974. I like it when you don’t have to EQ much or add tons of compression yet still have the guitar sit in the mix and sound balanced and full. These all birch models have a very nice focused sound that seems to have its own natural compression. Every note has the same amplitude and clarity without the guitar being tiny or bass heavy. Most Martin D-28’s require substantial EQ cut on the low end to keep it from sounding tubby. These guitars don’t have that issue.
Scott Baxendale A good recording guitar is worth it’s weight in gold. Players can spend their entire life buying and selling guitars to find the right one. Being able to get this in a vintage guitar, with a long service life ahead of it, is a big plus.
I've never seen a guitar rebuilt. That was amazing and Mr Baxendale is both an excellent craftsman and an amazing artist.

I was taken on a tour of Scott Baxendale's Luthier School Workshop. There were instruments there being rebuilt that they chose to not divulge who owned them.

So awesome to finally see a repair like this reach fruition. I saw a project like this started once as research for an interview article, but I nearly fainted when the technician began deconstructing a really fine vintage instrument. Thanks for another treat Warren.
The disassembly process look a lot scarier than it actually is once you have learned the process. It takes a keen sense of awareness and a bit of finesse while you are separating the parts to avoid disasters.

90% of those post war Harmony/Kay and most post war Regals have Undesirable Necks! I’ve X-Braced Kalamazoo/Cromwell’s and Gibson LG-1 ladder models-their necks are decent. I went a step further with My 1938’ Gibson recording K- I Installed large Carbon Truss Rod and Tapered the neck for superb playability . --It’s a Cool thing to see those old Guitars brought back to life👍

Late, but not late to the party here. I saw you when you did this video originally, then got sidetracked and lost your channel somehow. However, it convinced me to find one. Guess what? I found one :). I actually talked to Scott before I bought it. It was the exact model you're holding/playing. It is my favorite guitar, particularly for old school fingerstyle blues. I don't think I ever thanked you properly for turning me on to Scott, so consider yourself properly thanked my friend. Great channel as well and please keep up the great work.

i remember when my sister gave me les paul knock off ( i think it was an Austin ) . my friend fell off my bunk bed and broke it. i miss it now that i don't have it and my sister is no longer with us. great memories though. cool video Warren.

Jerry McKenzie it’s mid priced! To take a 500-600 dollar guitar and make it sound like a 2-4K guitar is a big deal for me! It saves wood, uses the original wood and transforms it to a next level instrument! Plus eAch guitar has its own story and personality
Warrens guitar sold for $19 when it was new. Now I would put it up against any new Martin or Taylor.

One day, back in '91, I picked up my then-girlfriend up at LaGuardia. Her baggage was busted open, and her stuff strewn all over the carousel. I can't remember for certain, but I'm pretty sure she flew in on Delta. Not that they were the only airline guilty of baggage mishandling, but I'm just saying.
Adam Fox haha yes those days you didn’t really have much recourse! You would just call them and write letters and they worked on the theory that if they dragged it out you’d go away and of course most of us gave up!
Fantastic. I was just given a '60s Stella for Christmas. The body and neck are in great shape I just need to replace the nut and bridge. Currently without a whole nut I'm only able to play with a capo, but the tone is surprisingly good for a guitar older than me and who is missing some parts (The guitar, not me...I have all mine.) :) It'd would be cool to have someone like Scott improve it more still.

Jason Simmons have you tried Elixirs? Or the new Sono-Tones? Any opinion on either?
@@Producelikeapro I have tried the Elixirs and they lasted a long time I didn't like the coating on them. It gave a funny feel to them. I know the difference is minimal in feel but I couldn't get used to it. Haven't tried the other brand you mentioned but I might give them a go now that you have mentioned them. Thanks for all you do for ppl like me. I've learned a ton from your videos. 👍
Produce Like A Pro As a Luthier who has been restoring guitars professionally for over 40 years I can say we do not like Elixer strings. They are a life saver for the guy with acid hands, however. The coating changes the sound which on a tinny or crappy sounding guitar smooths out the harsh high end and makes them sound a bit better. However, on an acoustic guitar that has world class tone the coating dampens the sound and dynamic range of the guitar. We prefer phosphor Bronze or nickel strings without coating. I’m a huge fan of flat wounds on archtops!
Just curious about why they changed out the floating bridge?
NedFumpkin the new bridge was a vast improvement in sustain! It sounds amazing now!! So much richer!
The floating bridge and tail piece design works by the strings setting the top in motion by pushing down on the bridge when you pluck the string. Violins are made this way, and when a string is bowed it works great, but the sound has very few overtones.
With our tuned scalloped bracing similar to a pre-war Martin the top is set in motion by the strings pulling up from under the bridge. A much more sophisticated tone can be achieved with this design vs the tail piece design which gives a clear fundamental tone but very unsophisticated overtones. Our bracing with the standard pin bridge design provides the best tone, balance and headroom. This gives the world class tone that is so essential for great acoustic guitar recording.

Superbly refurbished! But is it worthy costwise? I guess it's worth every penny because it has a sentimental value.
SkankTv RO it’s worth EVERY penny! The guitars are made of solid wood! The thing that let them down the most was the bracing! Once the bracing is upgraded it performs like a guitar 2-3 times the price! And, very importantly it saves trees! This is a 40-60 year old guitar that now makes great records!
It’s totally worth it cost wise when you consider that for around the cost of a new Chinese made Blue Ridge or Low end Martin made out of Formica you get a “New” remanufactured guitar made from wood that is anywhere from 60 years old to over 100 years old that has stabilized to the point where it is basically impervious to drastic changes in temperature or humidity. Plus it has new tuned scalloped bracing that you normally can only find in new guitars that cost over $5000. Sentimental value has nothing to do with it. Once it is completed the guitar sounds better than any new factory made guitar at any price, and is at home in the studio or on stage. I’ll put the all birch guitar we just rebuilt for Warren up against any Eric Clapton Martin and our rebuild will win every time. Do you think a guitar that can do all of that is worth $1000? Our remanufactured guitars come with a full new guitar warranty for all structural and playability issues, making the new real relic guitars.

@@scottbaxendale323 now i don't know, but here where I live, there are the best on classical instruments on the country, they works with great woods and your works for me it's the best on that area, and I found many great instruments from many people but the works from they, its really amazing, i don't know if you know from the Ramirez brother's, they made the best acoustic instrument from Venezuela, the best musicians from the national classical orchestra, Simon Bolivar here they play with your instruments, I remember when I was talk with they that the violin cost between 400 / 2000 us dollar's, and maybe some more, its depending of the instrument. There are others guitar builders but I don't know if they still working here because many people get out the country about the bad situations. But here are very good people who work's the Luthier job.

Completely off-topic: I made myself a present and boght Outer Space by Audiothing, a kind of Space Echo plugin and is so awesome. This is by far the best delay plugin I own or have tried. I'm not affiliated with them, but using that thing is instant fun and a creativity booster. It topped my beloved H-Delay, STA-Delay, EC-300 and is par to Echoboy. Sorry for the long shout out, but I'm so happy with that thing, I had to share it.

The painted position markers get sanded off when we straighten the neck and re-radius the fingerboard.
We generally prefer real mother of Pearl dots over the painted white blocks, however if a customer requests the blocks we will repaint them on the fingerboard. Everyone’s tastes are different.

Hi mietschie he straightens the neck, flattens it so it’s even and then re-frets it! Truly amazing!
Those blocks were just painted on the fingerboard and when we straighten the neck they get sanded off. Usually we just inlay pearl dots, but if the customer requests we can repaint the blocks.

Ok this one was a wreck but generally ladder braced guitars are invaluable treasures that should be preserved, nothing sounds like them and almost no one makes new ones. So i think its a terrible trend to ruin them by X bracing.

Lol is it me or does Warren play the same riffs over and over again? There's no complaint, but it's just something I've noticed.

We all have our standard guitar testing riffs. In our shop with ten different luthiers there are 10 distinctly different guitar testing riffs. lol.

On most Harmony and Kay models its a flat rate of $975. this includes all the parts and labor to rebuild your guitar. the rebuilds we sell range in price from $500-2500 depending on model, woods, age, collectibility, patina, etc.
