Meander along a winding pathway-past tangled roots, unfurled branches and detailed animal carvings-to the base of the Tree of Life, the symbol of Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. Venture inside and receive a pair of 3D glasses before taking a seat inside the approximate 430-seat Tree of Life Repertory Theatre.
An “Off-Off Bugway” Show
Flik, the loveable ant from the Disney•Pixar film A Bug’s Life, invites you and your family to become honorary creepy crawlies by donning a pair of special “bug eye” glasses and watching an exciting 3D film and live show on the survival techniques of bugs.
During the show, dodge flying quills from a tarantula, feel a harmless “acid spray” from a soldier termite and inhale the putrid “defense stench” from a stink bug. But when Hopper-the grasshopper villain from A Bug’s Life-unexpectedly shows up, the theater becomes a swarm of crazy activity, led by buzzing hornets and tumbling spiders.
In the end, you’ll learn “it’s tough to be a bug” surely, but more importantly, that insects are our friends.
With dazzling 3D movie effects, Audio-Animatronics® figures and in-theater 4D surprises, It’s Tough to be a Bug! places you in the center of the fascinating world of insects, showcasing the incredible value they add to our lives.
A Disney Park First
It’s Tough to be a Bug! made its theme park debut before the hit movie on which it was based premiered.
As the concept for the attraction began at Walt Disney Imagineering, story development for the movie was well underway. At that time, the film’s only designed characters were Flik and Hopper. So Imagineering-with the help of a senior entomologist at the Smithsonian Institute-hatched the remaining insect cast and fashioned a story about the survival techniques of bugs.
Because the attraction was finished before the film was complete, Flik and Hopper went on to make their very first public appearance at Walt Disney World Resort-6 months before the Disney•Pixar film A Bug’s Life was even released.
Too Scary for Kids?
It’s Tough to be a Bug! may be too scary for very young children. This attraction celebrates the creepy world of bugs like spiders and termites, and some of the set pieces and scenes contain some startling subject matter.

This is what caused most of my nightmares and still does
I remember being sprayed by water when I was a kid and literally freaked out. Had nightmares for about a week haha. Now I look back and say aw it wasn’t that bad
This scared my sister and I to death when we were kids. We both left crying because of the stupid spiders and the movement in the chairs! They should warn you better before going in.

This show scared me so bad when I was a little kid (I believe i was 5 or 6). I believe I went to Disney World the first time in 2003/2004. The darkness and the spider part is what really got to me. After, I developed the fear of spiders
Crazy we’re about the same age bc I went when I was 6 in 2004 as well and I still sort of remember this, I thought the spiders were cool but those cockroaches were the end of life to me lol. I’m hoping to go back to see it again within the next couple of years.

Some people that go to these kind of Disney attraction need to lighten up. A LOT of people had the time of their lives because these attractions are so thrilling.
going in as a child without any warning as to how it'd be (vibrations, spiders, etc), this attraction really messed me up ngl

What I meant to point out is that there are more people who enjoy it vs the one’s that it scared. And a lot of attractions get shut down over a few people getting “scared”

I have arachnophobia and this give me hella nightmares as a kid

@@jenna6421 because it's a cool show. Also I'd like to clarify with my original comment since it is 4 years old (that's crazy) that the attraction doesn't necessarily get "hate" but more or less most people just don't like it because bugs creep out all ages from kids to adults. Although, part of the fun with this show is the fact that sometimes adults are screaming loud if not louder than the kids because they don't realize what the show is and they have some fear of bugs. I mean you literally get stung in your seat, they have little bumps in your seat that just poke you enough to freak you out if you have no idea it's going to happen.

I remember this, saw it once..
At like the 7min mark just abouts, they had these things that would flip out the chair and hit your bottom or leg as the imaginary bugs runn under your chairs in a row. Freaked me the F out.
You're thinking of the mice from Honey I Shrunk the Audience. At that timestamp, the closest thing is the wasp sting, which comes from the top of the backrest.

Ok I have never been on this ride before as I don’t live in the US but why did everyone scream when it was dark like before the spiders came and at the end?

The secret is they have sulfur pellets and they shoot compressed air and that’s what gives off the stink bug smell

Honestly, I don't see anything that scary. this attraction has, in addition to the 3D movie, some special effects, which can be frightening. But for you to have an idea, I was at this attraction 3 weeks ago with my 3 year old grandson and he loved it...
