      This is all dope, but something is off. Money is being made and not spent on some basic safety issues.
      Having your boys sleep like bums and labeling it toughness isn’t it. Someone is making money and not doing the bare minimum for these guys.
      Best of luck to you all! I hope I’m wrong, and all of y’all are champs one day!

    To anyone who doesn't train BJJ at the moment, I can assure you the bjj lifestyle does NOT require you to have torn knees, herniated discs, torn shoulders and the plethora of other injuries he mentions while at the clinic to stitch up his eye. You may not be a champion, but you can safely train this sport by picking safe training partners, having appropriate warm ups/cool downs and looking after your body/diet. Getting good at this sport requires longevity and training smart. I don't feel these guys necessarily have longevity in mind, he says himself if he breaks a leg he trains with one leg, if he breaks his neck, he'll always be glad he had his team. That's admirable but it is not a pre requisite for success in this sport.

    • @ethanm7968
      @ethanm7968 3 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      Completely agree but how people interpret the juijitsu lifestyle is so different and thats what i love. You have the SolCal surfing, skating, beach lifestyle. You have traditionals (gi only) often rejecting leg attacks. The nogi crew, like DDS. And then you have these guys who live and breathe jitz in a very hardcore way. Theres a lifestyle for everyone and some that have yet to be discovered. BJJ is very new theres so many lifestyles associated with it to be discovered

    • @smallswideawake
      @smallswideawake 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I don’t get the whole SoCal thing tbh, I lived in both Orlando, and San Diego, I’ve never trained harder, bled more, gotten injured more, than when I was in SD. Orlando was a bunch of casuals, which isn’t bad, but if you want to grind a good gym has nothing to do with where it’s located, which is the point they’re trying to make but still contradict themselves

    • @llai8501
      @llai8501 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@ethanm7968 I think it's much simpler than what you're saying here. The jiu-jitsu lifestyle to me, is exactly the reason we are all here. We love training jiu-jitsu and use it as a tool/vehicle for self improvement. Anything else we do (like skating, surfing, shakas, saying Ops, eating acai etc lol) are just extra curricular.

      It is dirty and the irony of the unwashed gis in a laundromat is real, but I train there and have never gotten staph, but I'm surprised I wash asap after being in the mats. I have gotten staph when I trained at "the lab" and it's an upscale pretty gym. After all that winning? Highly doubtful. They are college age kids living with their parents. You can’t possibly live in that much poverty and still physically perform at that high of a level.. is going to Hardee’s legit their only option for toilet paper and warmth? Highly doubtful. I might be wrong here, but I don't really understand so much hate towards these guys. I honestly think most of the people who hating just wouldn't last there a day and their best excuse is "I am just not dumb and I want to roll until I am 70, so I don't like this kind of training and environment". Good for you, then just be honest and say that this style is not for you, but guys do it and they have success, doesn't mean they all will be crippled by 40.
    I know it could be too big of a comparison, but if we post Navy Seal's boot camp videos here, people would be shocked as well. And the interesting thing is that 60% and more of the initial pool of recruits would just quit, or get injured, or get sick during the boot camp and would be weeded out. Because they and their bodies can't handle it.
    I think this gym is sort of the same. Those who stick around can handle it, and most of the people probably won't, so if it works for them, then it's good for them.

    To each thier own I suppose, I love jits but not enough to live in the gym and deal with all those injuries. I want some real longevity in BJJ and they might be able to find some longevity, but the chances are lower than someone that trains a bit less intensely. Then again I'm not too concerned with being a world champion either so if that's your goal you might have to sacrifice certain luxuries that the common casual practitioner are able to enjoy.

      I agree, if you want to build a long term legacy and be at the pinnacle of the sport than no. You'll be broken once you get to the podium and you won't be able to hold it very long. I agree with people like Firas Zahabi. He talks about how the Russian wrestlers train. It's playful and all about technique and drilling. You have the really hard tough rolls of course but not every single roll. Your body breaks down. Real intensity is for fight camp. If you watch the Danaher squad roll in Puerto Rico it looks like they're almost flow rolling a lot of the time, they're not going super hard. Drilling and technique is king and then you got your strength and conditioning of course. Once you got a camp, dial up the intensity more permanently. (I'm not saying no intensity ever, but definitely not intensity all the time)

    I’m a 42 year old 5’ 4” 175lb (3) striped blue belt. I am not an elite competitor. This is the extreme side of competition. Anyone the is an elite competitive athlete is obsessed about their thing they complete in, and everyone has their process that works them. These guys have very specific goals, and they are accomplishing them. That being said at these levels you have much higher rates of potential injury. Plus these guys are young and heal faster than people at my age. I am developing old man BJJ now. I train about 7-9 hour per week, I roll with approximately 20-25 rolls per week. I’m get bumped and bruised from time to time and occasionally get popped in the eye, nose, or lip, but never like these guys. BJJ is far safer than any other functioning martial art. I also do Judo on Saturdays and that Judo day hurts me more that all my weekly BJJ rolls. Also can you really go all out in boxing or kickboxing for 5-8 bouts per day? Not really. BJJ is my therapy and addiction. I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs, I don’t eat poorly, and don’t smoke. I lift weights, eat right, keep my weight in check to facilitate and improve my performance in BJJ.
