An in depth video essay on Fable 2 and how it plays from a modern perspective. I felt the need to put together this video along with the fable 3 video coming out at the same time due to the lack of any major critique based coverage for the game despite its release more than a decade ago. Which aspects do you think should get carried over into the upcoming Fable 4?
If you have any constructive criticism to leave in the comments below I’d love to hear it since I’m always trying to improve my videos over time. Thanks for watching!

Well found you after watching salt factory’s fable vid and fancied some fable content and dayum boi this be some quality content, gonna binge some more of your stuff now
Same here man.
Word Salt brought me here as well
Same here!
There is a little bit more to the morality system then was explained. the concept for good vs evil and purity vs corruption is supposed to be how you effect the world around you and how you effect yourself, though rent and shop prices are an exception. eating too much, paying for prostitutes, having multiple families, or making your family unhappy will also make you more corrupt. it also effects attractiveness in fable 2, where purity make you more attractive and being corrupt makes you less so. if you understand what actions cause good, purity, evil, or corrupt points to be made, you can easily max things out during your first visit to oakfield. grind some money to buy caravans, then jack up or turn down prices and max out your meter. donate the 5 minute income to the temple of light or go on a murder spree until you max out your meter. it seems complex, but its simple once you understand it, and honestly thats the way i like it.
Please do more of these long-form retrospectives. This was phenomenal
I didn't know that there were people that had nostalgic feelings for Fable III. Fable II is one of my all time favs!
Fantastic video man. I subbed.
I think I may be a bit older than you, as the more nostalgic era for me was 04/05 with vanilla wow, fable 1, etc. Even so, I gave this game a shot a few years ago, and I couldn't stop playing it. For all its flaws, it's still so great.
I drove my girlfriend into insanity working as a smith and hammering on those medals for hours on end...another really great review
I wonder how she reacted when you discovered the bartending job
I remember this game being my first introduction to the Fable series and I enjoyed the combat the most. There was just something with how smooth it felt to play that made taking on hordes of enemies very enjoyable.
Something small I'd add given you didn't do the marriage stuff is at one point if you have multiple partners/children you get blackmailed about it! Such a small detail but it always stuck with me.
Loved it, great job!
So, i have...a very dark connection to fable 2...the game dropped 2 weekss after my dad passed, so everyday i played it, i was my escape, now when i hear any part of the ost or the game i...break down back to a awkward teen and yea...BUT FANTASTIC VIDEO subbed
Dude I’ve been looking for someone to do a full on critique on fable 2 and 3 and I’ve only ever found fable 1 critiques! Your channel is already amazing just for these two videos alone
If I remember correctly, you CAN die but it's not until you've gotten all the scars you possible can.
On my first play through, my halo appeared right after I'd downed a bottle of wine and I spent a good hour or so thinking it meant I was drunk and in complete confusion. It also had happened between battles at the Crucible so I didn't enter the next round for about 20 minutes. Lol.
The minute I had passive income I cheesed the system by setting the clock as far in the past I could, entering the game to save, then backed out and advanced calendar as far as I could, then load the save and get your payout. Lol.
Gunslinger with the legendary blunderbuss, was a win every time.^^
I always helped the farmer that was a sheriff, the pay out later was well worth the wait. always
You are definitely improving as you do more of these, keep going!
Also, it would make the videos better if you can show examples as youre mentioning e.g. Stephen Fry voice in the game, I would have loved to hear it as someone who hasnt played the game
Pure nostalgia for me, from the “strength, skill and will” perks to choosing your preferred weapon (long sword, katana, cutlass, hammer, axe, cleaver) I wanted to use them all at once
I know I’m rather late to this video but I’d like to start off by saying this video does a fantastic job at mentioning all aspects of this game’s strengths and weaknesses. No other channel I’ve watched so far has accurately been able to talk about Fable 2 in retrospect as good as this channel has. For that, I’ll have to say this video is simply marvelous at hitting key points of the Fable 2 experience and that you should keep up the good work!
----------
Now however, I’d like to talk a bit about my own experience with the game as someone who recently got exposed to the series. First things first though, I started off the series by playing the original Fable. The original game was great but I would say it was far from perfect. I have to give credit to Fable 2 for improving upon mechanics from its predecessor and adding new features like: the town economy, making a passive income, owning a castle, more interactivity with NPCs, and the job system.
However, I firmly believe Fable 2 still falls short IMO. It’s game world and story (which I believe are very important parts to the series), are two of its more questionable game designing choices. Firstly, the drastic change in style from its mix of medieval/high fantasy/celtic-like cultural influences was “interesting” to say the least.
Fable 2’s heavy influence of Victorian-era styled culture was strange and so out of left field (at least from an initial reaction standpoint) that it left me wondering whether I was actually playing Fable’s sequel. This change made me question whether or not to accept a concept like being a mage/wizard in a surrounding environment that doesn’t very much fit for the role. That change was drastic enough on its own, that I avoided playing as a magic character almost entirely all throughout the many game runs I did. A major factor of why I enjoyed the first game was because I got to fully immerse myself in whatever class I wanted to play as-be it Archer, Warrior, or Mage/Wizard-while still feeling like my character belonged to that world.
Granted, I throughly enjoyed playing as a noble-turned pirate captain with the noble gentleman outfit, rapier swords, and victorian-styled pistols in Fable 2. But, I just couldn’t bring myself to play a mage character without feeling I’d be out of place. This just turned me off completely from enjoying the magic/will playstyle of the game. The drastic style change to the game world ties in a bit into my main problem with Fable 2-the story.
The story of Fable 2 was honestly lackluster and didn’t make a whole lot of sense. The fact that our player character’s purpose is to get revenge on a man that killed our sister is kind of a weak setup for a journey that would take us through our entire childhood and adult years all for the sake of revenge. Lucien isn’t a particularly powerful villain on his own, which is in contrast to the Jack of Blades being a legendary being of evil residing in a mask who throughout the generations has been causing havoc. The purpose for gathering heroes is questionable as the three heroes themselves don’t do much in the story, and there really isn’t a need to gather such strong allies all for the purpose of taking out an elderly Lucien who would die with a single gunshot.
Personally I feel like the creators could have chosen to write a more interesting story perhaps focused on the potential style change of Albion. Albion is teetering on the edges of change, from a high-fantasy rich world with magic and nature (like the first game). To a victorian styled Albion with factories, and maybe a corrupt government. Your alignment choices impact the outcome of the state of the world whether you’re in favor of this change or against it. Think of it almost like a civil war between two rivaling factions formed by the division of the two choices, and they need the return of a Hero from the legends of old to come in Albion’s time of need to make that choice. While also discovering the “dark” truth of why this sudden idea of “change” came to be.
Overall, my experience with Fable 2 is *just okay.* It could have been better, but I can say just the same about the original game as well. However, I feel like the drop-off in an interesting story and fantasy world for a more realistic open-world/side-quest driven gameplay style like Fable 2, basically puts both Fable 1 and Fable 2 on equal footing to me with not one being better then the other. If I was forced to pick a favorite I’d have to choose the original because it’s the one I enjoyed the most, but after all that’s just my opinion. Nonetheless, fantastic video my friend and a cheers to you, if you managed to read my post this far!
A major problem with 2's story is the lack of satisfactory closure. There's other plot holes scattered throughout the game but for casual gamers the one that's glaringly obvious is the lack of boss fight against Lucien. And when you look closer at the bones of the story 2 was trying to tell, that you DON'T fight Lucien in any substantial capacity makes even less sense.
Like, sure, revenge plot. Classic story. For basically the whole game we're beefing up Sparrow under the impression that Sparrow has a lot of potential and that they were set on this path by fate/Theresa for the express purpose of defeating Lucien. Only to get to the end and we kill him in one shot and it starts to hit you of whats the point of basically pushing Sparrow to the point of being a god amongst mortals. They didn't need this level of power to stand against Lucien, apparently all they needed was a clear shot and a ranged weapon. That on top of it being a game and Lucien has been set up as THE big bad so naturally gamers will expect you fight him, not shoot him , FIGHT him as such.
I fully believe if Lucien was given a proper boss fight it would've been satisfactory enough closure as a game that most people who don't look too closely for the cracks would at least be satisfied. Ideally it would be nice to have the plot tightened up significantly because Fable likes to play fast and loose with a LOT of its lore, but the bare minimum of improvement would've been just following through with what buildup Lucien had as the game's Big Bad.
mad respect dude, this was really good
from my experience, most players choose the family option to get the dog back, since before dlc that was the only way to get him back and without the dog you are unable to complete a variety of quests. thankfully the dlc allows you to dig without him so this choice opens up the morality of the ending choice without logic having such a hamper on it.
I want to see that real estate system in a mafia game (term not series, but maybe series)
3 minutes in and I'm already hooked you got yourself a sub man keep it up
I remember when the trailer first launched a friend of mine had a big projector screen at his house we went over there after school the day after the trailer launched and just watched it over and over and over again
Good job on this critique. Keep putting out quality content always improving and your channel will take off.
Only recently bought the Knothole Island and See the Future DLC. The first quest of each you can undergo as soon as you reach Bowerstone, I was surprised to find.
Found your channel while looking for retrospectives for the Dragon Age series, i watched Origins and now i'm slowly going through all your videos. Phenomenal work JBJett, these retrospectives are thoroughly enjoyable and i love how all the information is presented in a non boring manner.
Some retrospectives can get daunting after a certain point however at least for your DA:O one and this - i found myself watching this through it's entirety in one sitting without it ever getting boring, looking forward to more and keep up the great work !
Subscribed within seconds of hearing your voice, I know I'm in for a treat.
neat video, definitely scratched an itch for me being unable to replay the game right now.
Just recently beat this on my Xbox one agin and I can assure you that it crashed every 30 minutes and I found myself saving very very often. But still one of my favorite childhood games to date
Such an underrated channel.
Fable 2 and 3 I enjoyed whole-heartedly.
Even if I hate the balverines in both games
You sir, have garnered another subscriber. Great work.
Meanwhile I brought my dog back and didn’t even think twice
Amazing video mate.
Would love to see you go back and do Fable 1
best music, sound and vibe of the era. RELEASE IT ON PC!!!
It's been a few years since I've played the game, but I do have to point out that there's at least one other moral choice. I know that you mention it later in the video, but I also consider the Oakfield dual quests to be a substantial moral choice. Sure, maybe it only increases the number from 11 to 12, but I feel that it's still significant
Yeess feeed me more critque channels :))
Awesome job man!
You deserve wayyyy more views and subscribers. I have no idea what it takes to get big in this site. Keep up the good work. You make videos all over an hour long. I guess watch time isn't as important anymore. Either way I'm sure it's just a matter of time. You're awesome!
Edit: that being said maybe talking a little slower and more clearly wouldn't hurt either, as you mentioned about how you were talking about the morality appearince system lol it would make you easier to understand 😁👍
He'll get there if he keeps uploading. He's already on his way.
How HOW does this have only 2.k views >:/ subbed bc I love this shit man.
Let me start off with saying this: great video! I love videos like this, and this is no exception. The voice over was of perfect quality and nice to listen to, the clips displayed fitted very well, and you do make a few interesting points I've not heard before, such as the Wraithmarsh cullis gate being real contrived. Also the lack of a solid map to check where things are, fully agreed. The ending bit was also quite funny :P A bit of constructive critisism though, to make videos like this even better in the future:
There's a few very small structure things that could be better. For example, near the beginning you mention dying has no real consequence, when later you mention the scarring. It's not a big deal, but it'd be a slight bit more comprehensive if that's mentioned the first time you mention the consequences of being knocked out, along with the XP loss.
You mentioned you have to figure out the banshee fight, but that's explained in the loading screens even in the beginning of the game. To be fair, you can ofcourse miss them, but with the Xbox loading times, it's hard not to see it at some point before the first encounter.
There's a few things you mention that you seem to present as if that's just the way it goes, but that just depends on the way you play. For example, the thing you mentioned where you kind of have to pick the gold in the game's final choise. You can have several millions at that point easily (the last paragraph of this comment goes into that if you're interested). For example, I always do go for the dog, as there's a lot of things you can't find without him. There's a few more examples like this troughout the video.
You also mentioned that it feels as if Theresa strung together all these events, and made that sound like a point of critisism, as if that shouldn't be like that (or at least, that's how it felt to me), but that's the whole point. She DID set this up so she could properly see the future and in doing so, save Albion from greater threats. To be fair, you do expand on it well later on, but it'd be slightly better if that was mentioned in that section.
Also one thing, it's Castle Fairfax, not Castle Bowerstone :P again, not a huge deal, but getting these small things right can improve your video.
But again, not saying the video is bad, it's rather good actually, just a bit of friendly advise :) Of course some of that only goes for this particular game, but still.
For those who want some advise for their next playtrough:
I've never, ever picked the option to go for the gold in the Spire, because I always had well over 2 million at that point. Instead of buying a bar or houses, or anything like that with your first stack of gold, go to a blacksmith or gift shop (ideally one with a discount), buy as many items of the most expensive types you can get, then sell those to the walking traders in the Fairfax gardens. They overpay, so you can get A LOT of money in no time. I turned 50.000 into 1.000.000 in about 15-20 minutes with some youtube content in the background. Then once you've got that much, THEN buy all the buildings you can. That way you'll end up with millions by the time you're in the end game.
Use that money to buy lots of XP potions, healing potions, and especially, every chance you get, resurrection phials.
I enjoyed this game and now that I have a better understanding of games I think this video killed my nostalgia for it.
I also had a lot of nostalgia for this game, and replaying it a few months ago, I genuinely believe that it holds up. Some of the mechanics can be redundant if you know what your doing, but it's still incredibly fun and charming
The things you say about the morality system is very dramatic. It's way easier than that. With minimal effort I've been able to do just about any combination without donating to any temple. It just takes the right know how and exploits if you can even call them exploits. Also I purposefully did evil things to make my allightment go back down a little because I find the presence of a halo over my head annoying and very immersion breaking I wish they would have a switch in the options menu about that.
The big issue I had with Fable 2 is that sharing magic, strength, and skill is quite tedious and requires more grinding than any other game in the trilogy.
Perhaps I should just focus on skill and magic next time I play instead of trying to split my experience.
59:47 if you have the opportunity to watch some gameplay footage or better yet play Fable 2 on an Xbox series X I think you'll be blown away. Most of the graphical issues you mentioned aren't present and they gave it some Polish that seriously improves the way the game looks. I actually found myself a couple times I'm not whole island just stopping to admire the snow
12:55 Just casually unloads an entire clip into Hammer's belly.
I always thought the selfish gold choice was one of the biggest slaps in the face because a million gold really isn't that much in Fable 2 I feel like they should have given you the maximum amount of gold you can earn and then there's almost nothing to spend it on and you have to live with that.

45:23 That name is familiar
Dying? Whats that? We're fable 2! We don't do that!
was trying to replay fable 2 recently while my gf watched. shit kept crashing every hour and a half. was so annoying to replay shit because i hadnt saved the game lol
Comments are good for the TH-cam algorithm. (:
Old Gregg! Nice "mighty" sounding character there lol
Tried replaying this a little while back when I dusted off the xbone. Didn't even get all the money for the music box..... was sooo sluggish in the controls I couldn't bare it! Don't know if it's just a bad port or if I just mis remembered the quality back in the 360 days or if it was always like that and I just had little to compare it to back then but it just controlled horribly! Desperately needs a pc port!
Were you playing from off of a disc, Game Pass, or download from the store?
@@UncleDeadly1031 I believe I downloaded it while trialng gamepass on a one s that I slipped an ssd drive in
@@maroonstarsface I’m having the same issue, I think (and hope) playing off the actual disc might fix the sluggishness, as Game Pass, even if you install, still has that streaming aspect that adds a delay I believe.
@@UncleDeadly1031 maybe the disc sorts it, maybe it just doesn't like the xbox one and original hardwares the way to go. Either way this video satisfied my nostalgia enough that I'm not going to waste money trying to get it running since looking back I don't remember liking any of the sequels as much as the original that runs perfectly fine on my pc
i was at a cousins house when I was probably 12 and they turned on Fable 2 for me. I remember playing the intro part where you play as the young sparrow, then when I grew older I downloaded the game myself and played it. It’s definitely my favorite fable game, maybe because of that sentimental value but I just can’t get into Fable Anniversary or 3. 3 barely feels like a fable game to me and I don’t really like the clunky graphics and movement of Fable 1 💀
16:26 - 16:35 You just described me doing my job :D
I think you meant to say that balvarines are Fable's name for werewolves not wolverines.
Ste-phen not steffan!
OK while mostly good there are a few problems with the video that bug me. First happened when you claimed that all bandit leaders had will abilities. No they don't, only a single named bandit leader from a side quest has such abilities. There's also a single named highwaymen that uses some magic, but that's a different enemy type. Second is calling the wrathmarsh stuff contrived when the reason you can't just take a boat is because Bloodstone is a town of pirates, and would likely raid any non pirate ship that shows up. In fact it's even stated outright in a loading screen that pirates are the reason you can't just take a boat. Granted this makes taking a boat back to Bloodstone not make any since but taking one out is far more likely as it's probably a pirate ship that transports people as an alternative source of cash. While I believe that it's kinda bad writing to only have this information explicitly told in a loading screen it's still not contrived just sloppy.
Rarely comment on videos, but after realizing how few views this has gotten compared to the time you have spent on it and the quality it has... I'll have to criticize it.
The choice that you make in the end of the game between 1 million coins, reviving your loved ones or saving the workers isn't really that obvious atleast for me. I had started buying property from the beginning of the game to rent them out to buy the castle in the end of the game, but this is also for the reason that I knew I had to make alot of money to do good for the game world. I think the game had good end game choices but they implemented poorly to signal the player that they will need that kind of amount of gold in the end of the game.
Another thing that I disagreed with you was the annoyance of the balverinse knocking you out was that I think balverines were created to be the antimagic monsters, to counter players from building only magic characters, I think the developers wanted you to build a character that could do all of the combat moves. Fable isn't min and max RPG, it hardly feels like an RPG when it comes to leveling up your characters, it expects you to be a jack of all trades. You can chose one skill you want to level up first, but the expense to level up the other skills is really cheap as you make progress that it doesn't make sense not to level them up. Min maxing is fun in more complicated RPG systems, but I like fables alot because of their laid back nature, it's just fun without the player having to think nearly at all while playing them, it is what makes them feel so cozy...
I loved your video and will subscribe, after watching this I kind of feel like I might discovered a hidden gem channel.
No PC WTF lol
Edit: oh god the framerate...
I usually got my real estate money by buying all the weapons in hte market and selling them to weapon vendors at fairfax.
2 things... you mean DOPAMINE not seratonin. And its INTENTS AND PURPOSES, not intensive purposes.
Need pc port so bad
Fable anniversary was the best I feel like with each sequel they lost something special....
30:21 nice spoiler...
why did that dragon age origins snippet look like unadulterated ass bro lmao
Play Neverwinter Nights... seriously it has more choice and player coustomization.. and it did it better earlier.
Weak game compared to the first and a better version of 3. They butchered the spell list, the armor, stats, medieval vibe, killable Heroes, longbow, boss battle etc.
Exactly, like where did all the good spells and armor go?
TBH, Fable 3 is held back by virtue of it being a Fable game. Its storyline and themes of more overt gray morality don't work well with the binary good/evil system Fable has in its current state. There's no room for compromise, there's no room for the concept to be fully realized. I'd probably be more forgiving of this and the other plot holes (like I am with 2) if they smoothed over the small awkward technical difficulties and quirks though.
@@notjimpickens7928 Guns make the armour irrelevant.
The spell list was mostly compressed into the aimed vs AoE versions or even outright combining some spells together.
Magic is ABSOLUTELY busted, the lightning spell is far and away the best and honestly kinda ruins the game.
Bro you sound too young to be talking like you are about these games in the intro
A damn good review, would give your more than one sub if i could :D
