I paused the video before I could even watch it, to say: Yes they really are that great.
I can't be arsed with them, on the other hand been listening to the fall a lot, winter is such a great tune, and not like anything else you'll hear
One thing I will always remember is that when I Believe In A Thing Called Love came out, I sat in my car listening to Jo Whiley on Radio 1 and she played it to Dave Grohl who was being interviewed. He just said in a loud voice "What was that!!!" in an excited exclamation and said how cool it was. I'm sure he was just as surprised as I was that a song on the radio had 3 guitar solos lol.
I think the world and his wife went "What was that?!!" the first time they heard IBIATCL. And that, for my money, is why it is and always will be the most joyful, sexy, fun bit of sheer musical brilliance. Particularly coming as it did after a decade or so of shoe-gazing, whiny, introspective dirges.
I remember that interview, Dave was so excited by jo saying “up next we have the Darkness” he was expecting a massive heavy screaming track, then IBIATCL came on and confused the hell out of him

It's kind of thrilling to see this video now - after Justin was so active recently in the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert, and even sang with Brian Johnson (AC/DC). Justin Hawkins is THE MAN.
I remember when The Darkness came to Providence R.I about 8 years ago they played a local venue and there was only about 150 people in the audience. They played like it was a stadium gig ..love these guys.

That's the way to do it. At my band's latest gig in April there were about 80 people in the bar. It's a small venue so it was packed and as far as I'm concerned it was like playing in front of 100,000 people. I was battling a nasty cold and there were a couple of times I thought I was going to pass out but I played hard anyway.
The Wasting Light album is my favorite album of theirs. Front to back, perfection.

They really give it all to the fans in their live performances. So much sincerity and energy in their shows.
Foo fighters are a great band with a catalogue of rock anthems and other classic songs ready to blast through at any venue. Anyone who's seen them live knows that the Foos kick butt and give their all every time without fail. After almost 30 years at the pinnacle of rock, they deserve all the accolades they get.👍
They are a mediocre pedestrian band in a world where there’s so many better bands than them
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 Not to mention they pretty much copied the whole arena rock sound from Pearl Jam. Listen to Corduroy by Pearl Jam (1994) and tell me that doesn't sound exactly like the music Foo Fighters were making by the end of the 90s/early 2000s
@@Yaqoot Pearl Jam didn’t invent that sound or style, the guitar riff reminds me of New Order which was a decade before and I’ve heard choruses like that in jangly 60s pop, Cheap Trick. Dave Grohl actually had some popular tapes circulating in the underground before Pearl Jam’s first album, he has always been writing the same kind of power pop rock music since day one. Foo Fighters always reminded me of Paul Mccartney’s Wings. He even said he was inspired by AM radio and ABBA. If you look at Foo album sales, it doesn’t suggest they should be an arena band at all, most if the people buying tickets probably don’t even own a foo fighters album, its more like white suburban families looking for something to do on a Friday night so lets go to a rawk en roll show.

Also I didn't mean arena rock as an insult! I'm talking about that sort of style or sound,not that they're only good in an arena or whatever you may have thought I meant
I'm not saying foo fighters did a Greta Van Fleet, Dave Grohl is a massively talented songwriter and he deserves his flowers, I've always liked foo fighters and even saw them live in 2010. I'm just pointing out that the sound and style from Pearl Jam's arena-rock hits is almost like a benchmark for the 2nd Foo Fighters album (The Color and the Shape), that whole album sounds directly Pearl Jam influenced. Both bands have a lot more to their body of work than just that sound, but songs like My Hero and Everlong put Foo Fighters on the map as a band that sound great on a big stage in an arena or stadium. I just find it weird how blatant it is on that particular album

I’m a 44 year old Hard Core Nirvana fan since 1992 and have really loved the Foos first few albums but the last 3 or so have been to commercial for my taste. Last good song they had was All My Life. I much prefer The Darkness 😉 seriously. P.S. There is definitely 100% a God and his name is Jesus. Yes I like rock and believe in the almighty creator. Your an idiot if you don’t think there is one.
I don’t like FF for their technical ability; I LOVE them for their enthusiasm about all things musical, and their super eclectic tastes. And, Dave’s avuncular relationship with up and comers like Nandi. Good guys. Just really good guys.

Love the Foos, some albums are better than others but every album has a handful of cracking tracks.
I just finished reading Dave Grohl’s book. Dude loves all sorts of music and I love the way he writes songs and puts on a great live show.
What was the book like - full of himself etc ... or just "you know dabbled in drugs, alcohol, saw the light, got married, my wife helped me through some shit, had a kid, kept touring, wrote songs, became a puppet and produced boring music after I made some fucking great shit in the beginning with Foo and Queens... but my contract stated .... I needed to keep going .... "????
Book is great. I haven't actually read the book, but I listened to audiobook. It was a great experience, since Dave actually reads the book, so it gives you the feeling of him telling you all those great stories from his own POV. I would recommend everyone to give it a go to the audiobook.

I’m a huge Dave grohl fan from all his drumming projects ..not really a Foos fan but I will say this..I saw the Foos in Australia a few years ago and they were/Dave was incredible!! So damn good live and he knows how to engage a crowd! So charasmatic! Love you Dave!!
Wasting Light I think really showcases the band's technical talent in all aspects - songwriting, vocal range, melodies, harmonies, drumming and the heterogenous nature of the album. They're a "great band" in my opinion - whatever that means.
their best album by far.. killer songs with so much heart... the recent records lost it though... and that 666 movie gave me chills... that´s not Foo like !!

Dave Grohl is definitely one of the coolest Rockstars of the last 30 years and by all accounts an incredible frontman and storyteller but… the Foos music with the exception of a handful of songs, leaves me indifferent. I just never found that ‘personal’ connection to them.

Same. With the exception of a few tracks from The Color and the Shape, it just goes in one ear and out the other, nothing grabs my attention or stays with me. Gotta say though, the guitar tone on that album is INCREDIBLE.
If there's anything great I'm missing I'm def willing to give it a try, but yeah
Dave’s so much better behind the kit than on vox. QOTSA, Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures (lesser known, arguably his best drumming ever imo)
@@wickharr I like Dave as a front man because he is so very charismatic. Having said that, he is an absolute beast of a drummer, and I do wish that Them Crooked Vultures would make another album. Talk about a super group!

Seen them live at fenway Park when Dave's leg was broken still put on an incredible show in a kick ass giant chair. Fun fact Dave recorded the first album by himself played every instrument and then recruited the band to play live shows.

I'm enjoying the content Mr. Hawkins. I appreciate the insight you offer to the thought processes behind your opinions. I find it shifts the focus from agreement or disagreement to understanding and contemplation. I find myself thinking about my own songs after these episodes and how I can improve.

This is great! I absolutely love both The Darkness and Foo Fighters, so it's cool to hear you take as objective a view on their stuff as you can (for someone who doesn't listen to them).

I grew up in the 70s and music has been my everything. When I heard the Foos first cd, that Dave recorded basically alone, I loved it. The first true rock band in a long time. XStatic..love it. I bought every cd. About 2 weeks after "One by One" came out and I learned every song (sang in bands in my 20s and play piano) I went to ER. Very sick, 3 kids at home. I had sepsis from a kidney infection. I was out of body for days. Played every song in my head. Drs told me I was incredibly lucky to be alive. The power of music. Would love Dave to hear that story. I've puzzled over this many times myself. The Foos seem like they have all the constituent parts that would make them era defining rock gods. Some of their best songs can feel like they're going to be hanging out at the top of your all time favourites list forever....but there's just something subtlety missing that means they get boring really fast. I bought numerous Foos albums over the years and had periods of listening to them a lot but I never seem to go back to them, ever.
The only conclusion I've ever been able to come to is that there's a lack of emotionally honesty/vulnerability. The songs appear to express emotions such as happiness, anger etc but it's like there's something unconvincing about them. Once you've heard them many times, the emotional content just doesn't seem to ring true on some level. I'd love to know if anyone else has noticed this or its just me!

Yes, this is exactly how I feel about FF.
One might make the claim that what's missing is the "balls". Seems to me with FF It's only ever angry, loud or fast ENOUGH to function as rock but never really dares to go harder in fear of being "too much" one thing or other. So safe is the word, I suppose. It's good enough (lol) music but I can't imagine them inspiring too many mosh pits.
I haven’t been super impressed with a Foo Fighters record since Wasting Light, which is almost 10 years old now. However, the newest album is their best since Wasting Light IMO. I’m devastated by the loss of Taylor Hawkins. Even if I haven’t loved the last few records, they’ve been one of my favorites and a huge influence since I was a little kid. Still doesn’t seem real that Taylor’s actually gone. 💔
Rope and the title track grabbed me from the get go and I remember as far as energy and speed the rest of the record is solid. I'll admit they give you a show when you see them live. I saw Dave after he broke his leg and fun from start to finish

I am not a big fan of the Foo Fighters but I will say that the have produced quality music for a long time. Every album they have has had a least one or two songs on it that are really good. To do even that consistently for that many years is impressive. Plus Dave Grohl seems like such a nice dude that you can't help liking the guy and celebrating his success.

The Foos have been my favorite band since 1997. I love the comfort they provide. I love the melodies and percussive guitars.
I love that the band has become more musical on the past two records.
‘Wasting Light’ and ‘There Is Nothing Left To Lose’ are my favorite two albums of all time.
I wish they varied their set lists more, but that’s my only complaint with the band I’ve unconditionally loved for 25 years.

Part of the appeal of the Foos is how great they are live. I've never really doven into their records but saw them live once and had a blast, great showmen.
I was a big fan from Colour and Shape to One by One as far as albums go, after that there are only a few songs I like and many that did nothing for me, still Dave seems like a great guy, a true rock musician, and I'm happy to see the band still going.
Hey Justin, love your show, and your incisive wit. For something different you should check out Keith Jarret's Koln Concert and the backstory to that recording. Very interesting and I think you would dig it.
Just started playing guitar and trying to get into the muso space out of sheer interest rather than imagining I'll improve. I do like your dissection of songs, approaches, ideas etc. At 50, I'll keep enjoying tinkering with my guitar and realising how good everyone else is. BTW; loved you at Tribute show.
When the world was full of rock and everyone listened to it I turned my nose up at FF, after all, there was real serious rock to be had.
Now I love them. The big rock anthem. Simple and fun but still, not many people delivering big rock anymore
I think I know around 3-4 songs of the Foo Fighters, never had any moment where I felt their music inspires me enough to follow their journey, but I never felt that I dislike them. Actually, I think they're pretty cool.
I'm on and off with them, their last album wasn't very good but concrete and gold was beautiful
I feel exactly the same. I feel like I must be missing something but i I know their biggest hits and think they're OK, surely I'd be grabbed enough to take in the rest of their catalogue.

Waiting on a War is one of my favourite rock songs of recent memory, right up there with Rock and Roll Deserves to Die ;) Both start with pretty acoustic parts and by the end you want to headbang until your head snaps off.
Some of the Foos can sound a bit same-y but they know how to write catchy hooks and use interesting lush chords (with 2nds, 4ths, 6ths) and progressions.
In Your Honor part 2 is probably one of my favourite albums of all time and it's all acoustic if you want to hear them branching out. Lots of pretty sounds on there.
Great video! All points incredibly accurate. For me, it's a resounding, "Yes, the Foo Fighters are great". Just the guitar parts alone make them great, for me. Three guys, all playing loud, but all fitting in to this giant jigsaw puzzle that comes together and is just perfect. But, I'm a guitar maker and player. If you just break them down member by member, Pat Smear was in the freaking Germs! Huge! Dave Grohl didn't even play guitar in Nirvana and didn't sing lead. He went into a studio ALONE and, recorded an album that was the inception of a band that has sold 30 million records and played 300 headline stadium shows. Taylor Hawkins is maybe among the best rock drummers on the planet, which you would have to be to play in the same group with another of the greatest rock drummers on the planet. Nate and Chris are solid, talented, incredible musicians and Rami is a great addition to an already complete and fantastic sonic tapestry. For those who weren't around back in the era of Stadium Rock and larger than life guys like Freddie Mercury, Bono and David Lee Roth, the Foo Fighters are kind of the last vestige of that art form. They are THE rock and roll band, loved by fans of all ages, all demographics, etc. I don't care how nice Dave Grohl is, and he is SUPER nice, no commercial enterprise would do what the Foo Fighters have done if they weren't...great.

The thing about Foo Fighters fans that gets me, and even a bit in the case of Justin calling them 'the other guys' here is that no one acknowledges that Nate Mendel was the bassist for possibly the greatest emo band of all time - or one certainly up there
I just always felt he deserved a bit better. SDRE, especially Diary, is so bass-heavy and bass-driven in general as well.
@@jackknowles5295 I hear you man. Seriously. All those guys are freaking fantastic and have pedigrees that are pretty amazing. Chris was in No Use for a Name, an amazing San Francisco punk band. Taylor Hawkins played with Alanis Morissette at the absolute height of her popularity. She could have hired any drummer on the planet and Taylor Hawkins was the guy. Sunny Day Real Estate gets mentioned quite a bit in the documentary they did a few years ago, so maybe check that out. It's a great doc as well. Anyway, hear you, bro. It think it's a case with the Foo's of a ton of talent and only so much spotlight to go around. But the real fans know that every one of those guys plays a part in the success of the band.
I only really found this channel in the last few days and I think I've watched a few hours of your content. It's great stuff. Have you considered doing musical theory lane? I know Rick Beato has done a good job of that, but you come across really well informed and that like Rick, you enjoy teaching. Any chance of doing a few vids of deconstructing your songs and the intentions behind them, then move on to other artists? Probably asking too much of you, but I do enjoy listening to musical construction and I'm not alone there.

Their 90s stuff still holds up great, as does Wasting Light, but maybe I have my rose tinted specs on as they were one of my gateway bands when I was discovering music and I saw them quite a few times when I first started going to gigs and festivals. They've never written breathtaking, nuanced music with layers of depth that makes you rethink music like, say, someone like Radiohead, Tool or Arcade Fire does, but they're great at what they do, which is big, loud, fun guitar rock. A bit like The Darkness really.

For the record, I think Justin could give (Uncle) Dave a run for his money in terms of being the "nicest guy in rock".
Nothing left to loose, one by one, and some n your honor are great varied albums by them. Probably my favorites BUT I will say aside from waisting light alot of their newer stuff after echos silence patentice and grace.just hasn't grabbed me like their older stuff

I put on Everywhere But Home last week. Their One By One era tour dvd. That band is no more. But what a machine of a band the four of those sound like a powerhouse. Only four songs in you have had major hits. And that is not a problem because the set just keeps going with great stuff.
Last two times I watched them on a festival with their intermissions and Queen covers etc. Totally different thing. But yeah it is hard to say they are not good. As much as I stopped listening to their albums after Wasting Light, you can't deny their body of work.
Darkness songs are way catchier. Plus they have those rock ballads that no one seems to mention, like Conquerors and Living Each Day Blind. Foo Fighters are easily two points down from The Darkness.
I'm not really a fan of Foo Fighters myself. But when I open my ears and give them a chance I hear little bits of the history of the American underground scene of the last 30+ years combined with really sharp pop sensibilities. Dave Grohl started playing with one of the best DC hardcore bands of the '80s Scream, so he knows how to blow the doors off if he wants to. That and it doesn't hurt that the second guitarist is Pat Smear from the Germs, another underground punk legend. The creative well they can draw from is off the charts.
They have like four guitarists including Grohl...right?

It’s easy to just go “yeah, okay” in reference to Foo Fighters- but “There Is Nothing Left To Lose”, “Wasting Light” & “Medicine at Midnight” are really great albums. Well put together, with great songwriting for the genre.
TINLTL and Wasting Light yeah are pretty good, but Medicine at Midnight? That is the most bland, boring, generic stuff they've done

Hi Justin. Peddling and afun wee ditty is CENTIPEDE by Josh Hommes, its on a sound city album. just mentioned cause its an example of beauty but simple.
Dave Grohls voice live is way more powerful than you'd expect and the energy at FF shows is just overwhelming. It's a great time.
I think it's hard to dislike any musician who is so happy that anyone else gets the chance to make music, as long as it appeals to someone.
Been a FF fan since day one and they continue to keep me coming back! Love these guys

I do have a soft spot for them since they got me into music, but I gotta say, regardless of what you think of their songs, their live shows are actually very good
Depends how old you are. When I grew up in the 90's and 2000's they were huge for a reason. In the midst of all the teeny bopper pop scene, Foo Fighters busted out some really genuine rock songs and that kind of set in stone their legacy for that generation. They were one of the few rock bands that made it to the mainstream purely because they were so good at the time. I can understand the younger generations looking at them somewhat in the same light as what we may have seen Nickelback or something similar, because in the eyes of someone who hadn't seen their foundations and the transition in genres throughout that time period, they would just be another dad rock radio band churning out albums to stay alive. For many of us though, the character of the whole band is probably one of the last surviving true rock and roll attitudes and certainly one of the best live acts I have ever seen in terms of the energy of their performance.

oh and it also helped that the frontman, Dave Grohl was in Nirvana, which was one of the biggest bands of the early 90's.... that may have helped a little, because guided by voices are 10000 times better but just not as popular, because no one died....
I agree with what you said but that's also why I've been in the "Foo's are overrated" camp for years. My issue is they are still considered a current and relevant band when all their best tunes came out 20 years ago. Have they put out a song with a decent chorus in this century? Are they influencing and inspiring a new generation of musicians? Why are they special when there are dozens of bands decades past their prime, still touring and putting out new albums people don't care about every second year. If you consider them next to all the bands doing casino and state fair gigs are they really that great? Do they deserved to be talked about like they are the most important rock band in the world today when so many bands that had a much bigger influence and have an arguably greater catalog of past hits are still doing the same thing? As in "still touring and playing shows with setlists bullt around hits from decades past and putting out new albums that only the most hardcore fans will ever listen to". If you are going to consider the Foo Fighters a current band, you also need to consider AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, Cheap Trick, ZZ Top, Ted Nugent, Billy Idol, Rick Springfield, Elton John, Joan Jett, Duran Duran, Styxx, Yes, REO Speedwagon, ABBA etc as current bands.
The younger generation will hate them and look down on them because Rock music is no longer a young person's genre . A teen today will scoff at Rock in the same way that I scoffed at Country music or classical over 25 years ago .

Foo Fighters are my favourite band of all time. I’ve been listening to them since around 96/97 and although my music taste has gone from Metallica to Regina Spector over 2 decades, Foo Fighters have always remained up there! Their music fills me with happiness! ☺️
Justin killing it as usual. Foo Fighters are just consistent. They're also so likeable to the point where there's no way to hate them, even when a song isn't totally up to snuff. Wasting Light is probably my favorite album of theirs. I also thought Sonic Highway was a highly ambitious project, even though it wasn't their best.
@Black Coffee Now As people, it's hard not to like them. Music is subjective, and it's true, not all people are going to like their songs. The way they carry themselves is what is likable.
I have seen the Food live 9 times. I love them. I loved Nirvana as well growing up. The Darkness were tremendous at T in the Park years ago as well. Just subbed and I enjoy listening to your take on things.

The riff is a classic blues riff where the “One” comes in on the G.. “don’t forget what your good book says” is a Neil Young quote (where the assumption is that the listener is the believer more than the singer necessarily) and yeah.. they’re a terrific band
I think they're huge mainly because of Dave. Everything Dave touches turns to gold, whether it be Nirvana, Queens of the stone age, Them Crooked Vultures or Foo Fighters. He's a phenomenal songwriter and composer

I don't know man, I disagree. Here's my take. Nirvana were paving their own path before Dave came along. He just took them over the edge in the right place at the right time to hit it big. As for QOTSA and TCV, they're both a hell of a lot more than just Dave. Everyone involved with those bands paved their own path and are all brilliant musicians and songwriters. Go down the QOTSA/Kyuss rabbit hole and you'll see what I mean. Nobody in their right mind would say no to playing with Josh Homme or John Paul Jones. I think those were passion projects for Dave. They wanted him because he is an exceptional talent, but they didn't need him to be successful. I think the Foo's are still huge because of Everlong and because they stick to their formula. Fun rock and roll songs that don't ask too much of the listener. They've got nothing to prove so they're just having a good time doing what they love. I definitely agree that Dave is a phenomenal songwriter though. No doubt about it my friend!
@@qotsajr Vultures was definitely a passion project and Josh/Dave taking the opportunity to play with John. I remember the interviews from the tour etc and they both were fangirling over him 😅
@@qotsajr Ive been a critic of Grohl my whole life. That being said, you act as though being “a great songwriter” is somehow easy. It’s possibly the most difficult thing in music. There are plenty of world class musicians who will admit that they cant write a good pop song. Its an art form in its own right.
@@qotsajr I agree, but I'm a drummer and I know Dave is a seriously good composer. He's no Vinnie Colaiuta or Dave Weckl, in fact he's nowhere near the level of an actual drummer's drummer, but the parts he's written for the bands he's been in are iconic and fit the songs perfectly. Jon Theodore is a way better drummer, and his era with The Mars Volta is the best, but Dave's parts on songs for the dead are way better than anything Theodore has ever written with QOTSA. That intro fill to smells like teen spirit is a perfect example. It could've been any flashy fill in the world, yet my kid's kids are gonna be playing that shit that Dave played, and as soon as anyone hears it you instantly know what song it is. That's what a good drummer does
I've had the pleasure of seeing the Foo's 4 times now. And each show is better than the last. Full of surprise performances and high energy. Even when he had a broken leg. I also met Dave and Taylor back in 97 and they are just as down to earth and cool as they appear. Or at least they were. This is my first time catching your channel, but I look forward to seeing more.

Never really heard them, but was in a a band once with a drummer who wanted us to be like the foo fighters. We ended up doing a load of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani covers.
Now THAT is a cover band that I would like to hear…

I saw you guys in London for first time in 2018, and I remember dear Taylor coming on to announce you. The whole night was amazing! The Damned, The Darkness (you were so entertaining :)), The Hollywood Vampires. What a night, and bless Taylor. I have some videos and photos of that memorable night.
Monotonous dad rock! I did buy the first album when it came out but that was more out of intrigue after Nirvana, I haven't bought or liked anything since.
Stoked to see a Backpacker right at the opening (and continued through the video). I bought one years ago, my house ended up getting robbed and then a few years later, a new girlfriend heard me lamenting about missing it and ordered me another. We’re engaged now…
Love the Foo Fighters. Seen them twice.

Their first few albums were great, then I sort of went off them abit as they started seeming samey, then I saw them half a dozen times and realised they are just a really, super high quality rock band in the old school way and I knew all their songs. Loads of integrity, which might preclude innovation, but they still rock. February Stars is pretty special.

I respect Dave Grohl for being a world class drummer, an extremely hard worker, a decent songwriter and obviously a very nice guy - But I've never been able to avoid comparing them to Nirvana and felt they lacked edge which might be down to the character of the songwriters, because when you compare Kurt Cobain & Dave Grohl as human beings it's not really a surprise that Dave Grohl's music isn't burning like a star on a collision course with a black hole... although I imagine Dave would be a lot more fun at parties...

Concrete & Gold was a fantastic album. It's been on high rotation for me since it came out. I even bought it on vinyl.
I've always just thought of them as a good decent rock band - I listened to The Color and the Shape a fair amount when it came out. I never thought they were brilliant, but solid.

Can you remember years ago when some of the more credible rock press would review an album and conclude it would have been a great E.P ? That is how I feel about every Foo Fighters albums I have heard , having said that saw them live couple of years back and the show was a great hard rock show . Kudos to them for giving the next generation the arena rock experience , and lets face it their are not many bands left providing that .

I loved their first record so much and wore it out listening to it back in the day. It was such an important album to me after Kurt’s death; I adore(d) Nirvana. So that first one will always have a special place in my heart.
