Both horses are KWPN. One harness, the other dressage (Totilas)

Yes it's becoming difficult to tell the difference between Dutch horses bred for dressage and Dutch harness horses. It's a pity because extremes in movement distract from sport of Dressage.

What difference, so much knee action and exaggerated front movement, it's quite new thing in dressage breeding. It has been a slow development yes with pure dressage breeding, apart from Jumpers but its suddenly very much evident. When looking at any number of young Dutch horses you first have to discount all those with exaggerated knee movement then you are left with a mere handful of good movers. You then have to look at the back end and discount even more. Yes carriage horses have always been there in fact the original Gelderlander was a carriage horse.......seems to be showing through again in Dutch breeding of dressage sports horses. Maybe they need to diversify the gene pool or they will be breeding pure Gelderlanders again. LOL. A lot look like the rider is on peddle boat, neck set very high up in the air and head usually behind the vertical with front legs thrashing in the air, hind end left behind......there is always the danger when selecting purely for movement that you will in fact end up with exaggerations, useless for anything but perhaps in front of a cart. It used to be called the "expensive trot" before it became so exaggerated but now its known as the silly trot. Good for auctions usless to ride. You need to train a horse to extend through it's body, you can't do that with a horse that is already flinging it's legs all over the place, everything just speeds up instead. How can a judge mark that?

River P I had a pure Gelderlander, you see them all over the place here. Most of them have a high knee movement. They're proud horses. And in front of a cart is not useless. And if you want a riding horse then don't buy a harness horse.

I loved seeing this training until I saw the man riding bicycle behind the horse cracking the whip. No wonder this horse seems so agitated and spirited.
