@@pre-dawnraid9037 Stormers fan here also - problem is if Stormers loose, and Ultster win, then Stormers face prospect of playing Leinster (or even Bulls) away. Tough for Lions but if they just had one more match during the season they wouldn't be depending on the permutations for other sides. They just needed more consistency - and not to have lost to some silly teams. Hope they make it. What's really cruel is that the pathetic Sharks still have a chance to make it to Champions Cup if they beat Gloucester.

Well done to the Lions from a Glasgow fan. Incredible defense leading to incredible counter-attacking rugby with 14 men. Glasgow looked completely shot. I'd respectfully suggest Lions' second and third tries were both way offside at the breakdown/turnover, but the way Lions (and Glasgow) played in the second half, I don't think it would have made any difference. JC Pretorius is following in Kwagga Smith's footsteps - Same high school, Blitzbokke, Lions and hopefully the Boks
Jordan Hendrikse had a great game in the unfamiliar 12 jersey, standing in for Marius Louw
Krappies van den Berg is behind a long line of Bok scrummies as well as Nohamba
The Lions back three - Edwill van der Merwe, Rabz Maxwane and Quan Horn - were solid on defence and on attack
Sanele Nohamba changed the game when he came on

I was at the game, incredible. I have spoken to a number of European players after Lions games and many of them say they struggle with the altitude in the second half so I thought this is what happened. I met Matt Fagerson after the game, wonderful gentleman, he said the altitude didn't bother them at all, so apparently not that. Just not their day, I guess. Lions are interesting because tho they may not have the big names, they have good structures and systems... goes back to their overhaul via John Mitchell some years back (built on by Johan Ackerman), even bringing in Carlos Spencer. Crazy that this Lions team has no Boks. But certainly quite a few knocking on the door. I agree about van den Berg - he's been consistently good this season. But so has Nohamba, in two positions. Who do you call up between those two? Another Lion who's having a blinder of a season (and pity he got hurt in this game) is Emmanuel Tshituka. For a few years he played in his brother's shadow, but ever since Vincent left he's been absolutely brilliant. But to be fair, all the other loosies - Horn, Venter, Pretorius - would look at home in green and gold. And then there's my man, Edwill van der Merwe. What a player. Fearless, lightning quick, brilliant feet, a rock on defence - he's just an allround great winger and would be my first Lion call up to the Boks. Possibly in place of Mapimpi. Oh, and of course Quan Horn. He must be in the running too.

You have a good chance of beating the Stormers as they are now in the playoff stages. And beating the Lions won't really move them up a position. So very good chance of them winning. I really hope the Lions make it to play off stages. I just want as many RSA teams to be there. And with a more than likely Bulls vs. Stormers QF, we need them. And I want Francke Horn to make the bok squad.

Regarding Morne, when he first came onto the Lions team around 3,4 years ago, I was always comparing him to a young Faf De Klerk (from around 2015-2017, coincidentally also at the Lions), in that its a scrum half who loves playing the game at a high tempo and is always willing to have a snipe, one major drawback though is that the kicking game I don’t think is up to Springbok Standard, Faf fixed that when he went to Sale but everytime I see Morne lining up a box kick I’ll admit I do brace for any possibility.
At the moment the South African scrumhalf depth is also insane with Faf, Cobus (granted he is probably going to be phased out now because of age), Williams, Hendrikse, Nohamba, Papier and Jantjies (albiet I don’t rate Jaintjies’s chances, he has been on a downwards trend since 2019) but that is still some list
Oh and don’t worry, I’ve been supporting the Lions for over a decade now and they don’t make much sense to me either 😆, I've seen them loose some absolute shockers and I've seen them come back from 20 points down against a Barret infused Hurricanes side, I've seen them put 40 points on a Sharks team in a currie cup final with 7 well known future springbok names (Lambie,Beast,Alberts, Du Plessis brothers, Pietersen, Marcell Coetzee) and then get relegated from Super Rugby a few months later, I've seen them go through an entire Currie Cup campaign unbeaten and seen them go through an entire Super Rugby campaign with only 1 loss only to loose the final (1 of 3 finals lost in a row), In short they, like any sports team I suppose, send your emotions for a 6 every 5 minutes And i wouldn’t change it

I like your comments about the law changes maybe backfiring. This goes double for ideas to reduce subs to return rugby to more of an endurance sport compared to today’s power game. That was a big part of the 95 bok win. With half of SA teams based at altitude and producing players like Elrich Louw and PSDT, even those reducing subs can really empower the boks rather than the opposite.

The altitude is nonsense excuse from amatuer days.
The highveld isnt high enough per the actual sports science on altitude lvls to make actual impact on professional sports wrt fitness etc. Its only impact on ball carry etc, not the players.
What is the impact, the 'burning' described by sportsmen from outside South Africa, is actually the harshness of the climate, its dryness. Its not a climate other rugby nations are use by comparison who all based on or close to the coastlines, in much more lush/green climates.

Would love if the SA teams would move to smaller capacity stadiums... I know they have as good an attendance as any of the other teams (or more) but in such large capacity stadiums, it looks empty and takes away from the feel.
20,000 SA in a 20,000 seater would be way more intense, and better for the tournament feel.

Lions have historically blown hot and cold and Ellis Park has been a death trap for many a top team on a day when the Lions get it right.

People call Mornè Van den Berg “Faf Lite” since that’s where Faf also played when he left was younger . Probably needs to work a bit on his kicking game.

When I saw Glasgow come out flying in the first 20min I understood the lions had been given a fantastic opertunity to prevail. Altitude in the second half would take its effect and that is what happened . It was a massive systematic and strategic flaw by Glasgow. They where never going to win that game with the approach they took.

The Lions problem has always been player drain to the Sharks or Bulls, so they're constantly establishing a new early season base squad and building their team back up. End of this season they're again losing a bunch of their 'A' squad.

I had free tickets but we couldn't make it 😅 We watched them live last weekend and also a great game. This one was next level, one man down and yellow cards. Reminds me of their Connacht game a while back and also a red card against them.

@@onlookervb I fully understand what you mean, nobody wants their team to lose. I am sorry about the Stormers outcome today and it was such a close game. I am a Sharks fan and they had a horrible start to the year and out before it got to the advanced stages. On the Lions side they have always had a electric running rugby side but they blew hot and cold over the years. Seems they are busy building up a formidable side and excited to see what the competition will look like next year. This year is anybody's guess as there are so many teams with the chance to make it to the semis.

@@free_stylabro6490 yeah it sucks but I kind of expected it to be honest we haven't looked the same this season with the new coaching group but they're all young so hopefully they get better and kick on next season and I think the knockouts are shaping up to be class so I'll still enjoy the rest of the season cheering on the underdogs that make the playoff

We need to rate the Laws too. Why is there a Law requiring a player to roll away after the tackle. There is already a Law saying that you can’t play the ball or interfere with play when a player is on the ground. I’ve seen two match results changed by referees awarding penalties for “ not rolling away” this weekend. In both cases (a) the player couldn’t roll away and ( b) he wasn’t interfering with the play.

The Lions always seem to give their best performances when they are under the cosh. This season there were 3 matches where they got a red card then went on to win against the odds. Great character and grit to win. But seriously, they have to pay attention to their discipline, soft cards or not, they must have one if the worst records in the URC.
