Thanks so much for watching! Up next, check out our other videos on Bridget Jones: - Why she so insecure: th-cam.com/video/VR9SgC1zVXc/w-d-xo.html - Why her failure is actually so important: th-cam.com/video/zyOCtVxkRy4/w-d-xo.html & Let us know if you're excited for Mad About the Boy or if you think they should have just stopped at Bridget Jones's Baby
I always loved how Bridget looked like an average woman, as opposed to a skinny model, which helped to keep her relatable to audiences. Her hair didn't look like it was elaborately styled, but that she'd simply done it herself, and she wore minimal makeup. Fortunately, Renee didn't have to gain extra weight for the third movie, where Bridget had reached her ideal weight.
Speaking of the weight, I get annoyed when people misrepresent the movie as being problematic™ for the Bridget Jones's weight comments, when it reads like a true reflection of an avg person with insecuritiee especially at the time (but even now). Yes, she's only 130 lbs, but she still *feels* fat and is encouraged to think of herself that way by societal standards for women's bodies, particularly of the 90s and early 2000s, when every aspirational figure was ridiculously thin (and it's pretty sad to see body image trends going back that way over the past couple of years imo). It's also worth noting that Bridget makes comments like "will lose 20 points obviously" when she thinks she's hit a low point in her life and is making ridiculous resolutions for herself to feel in control again. It ties back into her general lack of self-esteem, which is why Mark and her friends loving and wanting her for being who she is just like that is so powerful, and she never had to change her looks or personality. Bridget has flawed thoughts and that's ok because _portrayal isn't endorsement_ - it's how you write characters who feel relatable. I find female characters get this type of shallow scrutiny more often than male characters, for whom we more easily accept that just because they say or think something doesn't mean the movie is saying you need to agree with them.
So you need an actress to look exactly like you otherwise it isn't relatable? That is kinda weird. Like how do you relate to movies/literature that do not depict your culture or are period pieces then?
Why is the next "chapter" of a happily ever after alway killing off the first love interest? HIMYM, Jane the Virgin, Sex and the City, Downtown Abbey, etc. There is plenty of conflict in a normal relationship without it needing to be toxic or someone ending up a widow.
Seems it might be considered the most acceptable way of returning a protagonist their independence. Because making the protagonist divorce "the one" might still be taboo
@@swanne.9 But why do they need to be "reset" at all? Couples can go through a rut and fall in love again. Long term relationships can go through many up and downs without it ending in divorce: disease, kids, aging parents, money, career moves, etc.
If you like Bridget Johns movies, PLEASE read the book. It’s a way deeper. The movies made me think that Bridget is the clumsy, clueless woman who cares only about the man who doesn’t show any respect. But in the books you see her as an adorable, real woman. Who isn’t afraid to be herself, has flaws and a brilliant sense of humor. P.S. I’ve read the second book, the edge of reason. And was shocked when watching the movie. Especially the Thailand episode, when Mark Darcy showed up like out of nowhere.
This is incredibly interesting because it reminds me of an ex-girlfriend which I broke up with because I knew that she thought of me the same way that you're describing this woman in this video and deep down inside. I knew that at some point I. Would not live up to a dream and this would shatter a potential future. It was more complicated for us because it meant that I would have to move to Switzerland so adding all of that baggage on top of what I just said was too much for me and so I ended things looking back after visiting her. Recently I knew I made 100% the right decision.
All that work with Mark D'Arcy and they will kill him off? Unacceptable. I hate it when the love of a protagonist's life is killed off just so the protagonist can date again 🙄 I swear Hollywood hates happily married couples.
. @CineEquality did a good video on the series and like me she points out the red flags in the series. You forget that some of Bridget's mishaps were caused by others: Uncle Geoffrey did "forget" to inform her and other guests the dress code changed. Thanks to Suzie Kokoshka, shitty Boomer marriages, Dede Hill, Marge Simpson for showing me that there are worse things than being single after 30. Mark Darcy is 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
The first one was okay, it wasn't anything special. There was no need for three more movies. Hollywood, stop reviving dead projects that don't need to be revived.
@@blinkur09momI am in complete agreement. Liked the first one but saw none of the sequels. I had a glimmer of hope with Barbenheimer, but it seems like we’re back to the same old rehashed stuff. The Fall Guy? Gladiator 2? A Beetlejuice sequel after 36 years? More Bridget Jones? No, thanks.
No, no good at all could possibly come to anyone from seeing a middle aged woman on screen as a love interest in a society which would otherwise suggest we're all washed up after 30 /s

Not to me because I am a Black woman. Like the Breakfast Club movie, unrelateable.

I don't see what's fucking relatable about her! She IS skinny! And she's very white and blonde and very cute!
The irony of course is that in the first movie, she was very literally as skinny as a model. Just with a puffy face and big boobs 😂😂😂😂😂
So you need an actress to look exactly like you otherwise it isn't relatable? That is kinda weird. Like how do you relate to movies/literature that do not depict your culture or are period pieces then?
Thank you for another Bridget Jones video. I love learning and re-learning the lessons. She’s so iconic.
Preach, she's my favourite rom com heroine of all time.
I am so freaking happy to hear there will be more Bridget Jones 🎉
The throwing of the self-help books montage will never not be hilarious
Bridget Jones 4?!? Thank the heavens and the gods. Can't wait!!

I agree! They make the lead character end up with an older guy (mostly) and then BAM! he dies after a movie/ few seasons. LOL. wth??

@@mbanerjee5889 same thing, couple protagonists aren't the same as "the" protagonist. Or at least that's my guess
It's usually because the actor doesn't want to play the part anymore. An other example of men being selfish :D
Bridget Jones is one of my favorite characters.

I did not even know there was a book, so, that's something! I can add that to my to-read list, thanks!
Is the second book good? I couldn't finish watching the second movie because of how bad it was compared to the first.
I love her 😍😍😍 I don't care if she is cringy... I 💖 Bridget Jones...
So excited for number 4!!
more rom coms yayyyy altho I would like to see a Bridget jones movies without a love interest just her finding out more about herself
Bridgette Jones is my favorite 90s-2000s goldfish-brain
Oh 😭 3:13 the mighty tummy control, wast snatching, nude bloomers 😭 thank you Bridget.
She is so beautiful in the first movie
I’m still processing the fact that 136 is considered “heavy” that really makes no sense
I am still processing the fact that society is trying to make overconsumption and being overweight normal.
Lovely!
I would love to hear your take on 4B movement
I love Renée Zellweger so much
she IS Bridget
I hope Mark Darcy doesn't die in the 4th film...
The 4th movie will kill him off unfortunately. I had a bad feeling about him, and I read the spoilers.
He is dead in the book. So she is basically a single (but rich) mother

We're getting Bridget Jones lV? 🥳
*She was T H I C C boi!!!*
What's it like to see yourself everywhere all the time?

at 3:07 body positivty is NOT the same as fat acceptance stop conflating those 2 things.
and don't use Lizzo if trying to put a positive spin.
What’s up with the stories today and killing the male character???

Mark Darcy is 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩
Thank you for announcing the spoiler
I must be one of the few women who doesn't like Bridget 🤷♀️ but then I don't centre love or men so I feel that plays a part

I think Hollywood may be out of ideas, just recycling the same things

I think the two first ones are fine. I like the second one better. They didn't need to continue it after that.
Ugh, you say the same things over and over in this review.
was she 61 kg and they call her fat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
