    Intel is the world's largest and highest valued semiconductor chip maker based on revenue and is the inventor of the x86 series of microprocessors: the processors found in most personal computers (PCs).
    Intel supplies processors for computer system manufacturers such as Apple, Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Intel also manufactures motherboard chipsets, network interface controllers and integrated circuits, flash memory, graphics chips, embedded processors and other devices related to communications and computing.

    Nice video, however IMHO you missed the paradigm shifting product known as the 80386.
    Intels first fully 32 bit x86 cpu, that allows hardware multitasking, 4 GB flat address space, virtual memory, and virtual x86 mode , which allowed multiple fully functional real mode DOS VM'S to run simultaniously. in 1985!

    More interesting story would've been about the "Traitorous Eight" and how they founded Fairchild Semiconductors that established Silicon Valley in what it is today seeding the area with talent people who left and made their own companies. Robert Noyce in particular. He was known as The Mayor of Silicon Valley for a reason. I think Fairchild Semiconductor was one of the the most influential company of 20th century.

      AMD stole the 8080 arhitecture, thei didn't did anything in history, only the 64-bit computing and dual core-ing

    • @doohansmith4327
      @doohansmith4327 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      'only the 64-bit computing and Multi-core technology'. Only.
      They were also given the 8080. Not stolen.

    • @michaelmoorrees3585
      @michaelmoorrees3585 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      btw: other than some register naming conventions, the 8080 and 8086 (x86) are two different architectures. If anybody stole the 8080 architecture, it was Zilog, with the Z80, which could run 8080 machine code. Can't do that with an x86 processor. Software emulation doesn't count. I've written code for all of these in assembly language, which makes you intimately familiar with their architectures. You need to know the register structure, just to do basic (basic as fundamental, & NOT the BASIC language) assembly programming, for that particular processor.
      AMD may have copied Intel's x86 architecture. In the old days, both computer architecture and software was not patented. It was protected by copyright, which has more wiggle room. If two people write "War and Peace", in complete isolation from each other, and no link can be shown, both can be published, under copyright. Under patent law, the one that registers first, wins. Of course, all of this can turned on its head, by high paid attorneys.

    The original IBM PC in the US (August of 1981) shipped with a Intel 8088 CPU (not the 8086). The 8088 was 8-bit, cheaper to make, and had higher production yields than the 8086. I had one of these original PCs (when it was new on the market), it ran at 4.77MHz, and was very fast for it's day.

    • @BusinessCasual
      @BusinessCasual  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nerbil according to Intel's internal documentation, the 8088 is just a 8086 with a replaced external data bus (8-bit instead of 16-bit), which is why I just simplified it in the video

    • @Nerbil
      @Nerbil 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, except it is called the 8088 for a reason, because it is different than the 8086. It is not the same as an 8086 chip, and isn't referred to as the 8086 by Intel or IBM in the original PC release. Example - tonyrollo.com/content/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/IBM_PC_5150_ad_1980.jpg

    Having a CPU those days was the equivalent of driving a great car. I remember the first intel up I had, was a Prescott, fast and strong, had a great grip and could break any code, then I had an athlon amd CPU. Was perfect, playing games on it was smooth like hot knife cutting butter. It was just beautiful to see a motherboard with no north bridge... eventually and stopped doing good coups and I had a sandy bridge. The first of the first core 2. This was a new era. Amd took years to catch up...

    Why didn't you mention the Altair 8800 computer which came pre-built or as a kit where it needed assembly down to the individual component, it originally used the i8080, introduced to the market in 1975. The computer that was seen in the movie War Games used an Imsai 8080, which also used an i8080, the Imsai 8080 was a clone of the Altair 8800.

    There is still so much more to this subject, but it is a good scratch of the surface. :) For example, in the early days, perhaps the biggest driver of this development was the military and a lot of of the money to that field came from the different type of government projects and research. I doubt we would have much of the computing technology today without WW2.
    Then when personal computers started to really take off, the hardest part was already done. After that it has been a lot about iterating the same idea, making the transistors smaller and fitting more on the same chip. The biggest revolutions here have probably been in the manufacturing technology.
    Why they stopped increasing the clock frequency is largely because it increases the power consumption so heavily. The increase of calculation power itself did not end, the means to increase it are just different than by increasing the chip operating frequency. Power consumption is a problem in two days. It directly defines how much heat the chip is going to generate, and therefore defines the size of the cooling system ( you cannot have a massive cooler for example in a laptop ). Secondly for mobile devices one big problem even today is the battery life. Energy consumption in relation to the computation power is very important parameter for servers and data centers as well. By other words, how much you can calculate with some unit of energy consumed.
    General purpose processors nowadays adjust their clock frequency up and down constantly depending of the load, to generate less heat, and to consume less energy. They also turn parts of the chip completely off when they are not being used, for the very same reasons.

ARM chips are highly customisable, more power efficient and have better perf/milliwatt and perf/mm2 than any of Intel's current offering. Not to mention ARM's business model which revolves around its multiple core/graphics IP.
