This video was very helpful, I bought a Rawhide mallet from you guys like a year ago and never used it because it was so hard a the surface coating would flake everywhere, I am definitely going to be doing this cause I love the finish rawhide mallets leave on your jewelry it's just hard to get the surface soft but I am definitely going to be doing this! Thanks so much really appreciate it! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

You just saved the day! I'm teaching a riveted ring class on Saturday and we will be using our brand new rawhide mallets. Guess I better get to work on conditioning.

Someone already said a sander i would think a belt of stationary disc sander would do the same thing faster and not risk embedding any sand or other grit from the cement?!?

It's a good way to release some aggression too.

#80 belt sander works like a dream, then finish with the file

That's what i was thinking they have a lot of equipment in that place I'm surprised they went with such a primitive method?

Ken Richner Probably because not everyone has a belt sander. I took a jewelry class years ago and they recommended the pound concrete method.

I use a screwdriver to break holes in the surface and then soak it it hot water for 20 minutes.... then I use a meat tendrizing mallet ( spike side ) to bash it... it flares out perfectly and no crushed and broken rocks, stone or brick in it. I wouldn't even use rough sandpaper, because it does stick inside the leather mallet head. Cheers

So if I have a very old rawhide mallet, from the 40s or 50s, and it's a bit worn and dry...does it need to be conditioned?
It was used in aerospace for decades, from a test lab. The joke was that it was used for "percussive testing." Then they were cleaning things out in the 90s and this was going to be tossed. So I took it home. It's still solid, but I'd like it to last.

I made my kids smash a new rawhide hammer into a cement step. I even took over for a very long session of beating up the step. It hardly removed any of the varnish. Took it to a belt sander to see if that would help. Neither of the 2 ways worked for me. I bought a rubber mallet instead and threw the rawhide one in a box.......can I rent you to beat one up for me? Or do you sell them all ready broken in?
I'm not a weakling either. I've broken delvin Ross into pieces hammering them

Just a query...does anyone use just one side of the mallet head...or just me?...

How long do you whack it for? Is it “5 mins” type thing, or “100 blows”, or “until it looks xyz”?

Great question! You do this until it feels softer on the surface. All of the lacquer will be removed at that point when it doesn’t feel hard on the surface.

One of my 3 huskies chewed up my only rawhide mallet the other day and I'm in no position to even buy another right now :(

Not a good idea to use a file without an handle...The Tang can perform major artery surgery...

99% of people who use files don't waste their time with handles. 100% of those people haven't injured their arteries.
