Hey Jackie, I'd love to see you try your own version of this. You need acrylic medium though, not white paint. Paint has pigment already in it so it will affect the color. (Been painting minis and such for 25 years now)
Waaait a second. Giving (at least really young children) transparent paint makes sense! Some children love to just slap the paint all over the painting and if it is a coloring page the outlines still shine through and the image is the same in the end but colorful. Never thought about that until now.
@@kellyfoley3268 it´s often hard to put too much paint with these kinda paints at least with one coat and globed on thick. It probably can happen but still less often then with paint that is thick to begin with. I don`t know what brought you to make the E out of hearts but I am here for it!
i'm struggling to see what the difference is between mixing normal poster paint and this? it's obviously not cheaper, i think it's just because it comes with a machine but you could easily teach kids the colour wheel and experiment with colours yourself. for $30 you could get some good quality acrylics and some canvases too
Exactly! You can just mix paint, it's liquid. I understand the marker maker because you can't just mix markers, but you can with paint. I can't understand why people buy this.
There really isn't any difference 😅 it's just a novelty machine and those little paint strips you're getting that I don't think you could get for cheaper
It’s really cool though! I remember REALLY wanting this when it was 2016. This and the marker maker, too! Sadly, the paint maker is either discontinued or not available in America, but I did find the marker maker! Got it a few days ago… And honestly, this makes it kinda simpler because the quantities of each color to mix can get confusing if you’re little. With th color guide, it kinda makes it easier!
Yeah, looks like this kit isn’t available anymore, you must have purchased from one of Walmart’s third party sellers. They’ve made it harder and harder to tell the difference between what they sell, and what they’re third party sellers sell. Here’s hoping it works out! 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Haha, this was evidently only $8.75 when it came out (on Crayola’s website), and was 2014 Time to Play Media, Parents' Choice, National Parenting Publication, Toy Insider's Top Toys for 9+years/Tweens, The National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval and Toys R Us Holiday 2014 Hot Toy List Award Winner. HOW?? How did it win an award? Did they try it out before they gave it the award?? 🤣
@@sharkgoddess I’m a little confused what exactly you’re asking? Yes, they most certainly test the toys before giving an award, basically those toy lists are just expert-recommended holiday shopping lists for parents.
@@tiffanysandmeier4753 Unless it's something you can easily look the value up, like Funko Pops. There are evil people selling Little Debbies cakes for $50, and even worse
I think the kit came with a more transparent type of paint, almost like something used in paint, pouring like pouring medium. 25:16 Obviously it’s gone bad but that might be why the paint is so transparent. If you use white paint as the base, then you’re adding extra pigment and the colors are going to be lighter.
Its also Washable paint, and what she used from her own stash wasn't. She likes to crap on Crayola but doesn't stop to comment on how its made for primary use by Kids and Teachers in classrooms, stuff that's easier to clean.
But Jackie… you don’t want to use white paint because it already contains pigment, thus you’d pastel pink. You need acrylic binder to show the colors of the paint strips. But there probably wasn’t enough pigment in the strips to make nicely pigmented paint. 😂 It was fun to watch, though.
Btw, Crayola paint is water based. Water colors are more transparent. The paint you like is acrylic paint. That is thicker than watercolor. Even the soft body acrylic is thicker than watercolor. The cornstarch method is supposed to be for acrylic paints to make the cheap ones (which are usually not that good of soft body) to a better soft body or maybe even somewhat of hard body acrylic paint. It's not for making watercolor not or less transparent. I feel like acrylic paint is easier to use 'cause it doesn't take a long time to dry, but it still gives enough time to paint with and it isn't as easy to have bleeding of the colors 'cause the paint brush had slightly too much water.
Just because it's water based doesn't mean it's watercolor paint. Many acrylics are water based. The difference between the two is that watercolors are revivable. Once they dry, you can add water and it becomes paint again. With acrylic paint, once it dries, it's done.
I love how Jackie gives her honest opinion like not giving a crap about what others would think because i saw another person review this same kit and they said they really liked it and here Jackie just saying what she thinks is really great so you really know what your getting :D
I know they used to use cloth to hold and ship dyes. They would super-saturate a cloth with undiluted color (whatever they used to make the color base from) and sell that. Then, the buyer would soak the cloth in oil or egg white or whatever they needed for the medium. Dunno if that's even relevant to color strips lol, it's just what popped into my head. 😊
the reason the kit had so many views was because of the nostalgia of the product. many people had it when they were younger so it was of sentimental value to them when they saw it.
Jackie you should try and get some vintage stuff from Crayola and compare it to their newer things. Like crayons (from the 80s) vs crayons from the 2020s. Might be interesting, or might be the same. IDK. lol TYSM for the video!
For a lot of her reviews/tests, she gives the item a fair chance and only hates on it when it doesn't live up to expectations but not with this one. It seems some brands, especially Crayola, she purposely sets up to fail. Not only is the Crayola water-based, WASHABLE paint, that she's comparing to acrylic, non-washable paint, but the paint base for the Crayola was also so badly expired that even when reincorporated was still the wrong color and consistency from what it should've been. Not to mention the Crayola paint if bought pre-made is less than half the price of the stuff she's comparing it to. It didn't stand a chance.
Talk about being a trooper! I can't believe the kit came from 2014! I would love for you to try to find one of the new kits to see what differences you notice. I had heard about the cornstarch trick before. But not that it wouldn't last so thanks for the warning that something precious could be lost. Blessings.
The cornstarch mixture honestly just reminds me of gel medium. It allows you to extend not only the amount of your paint (mostly acrylic paint) but also the dry time (again, mostly acrylic paints 😂). It wouldn’t really make the paint “denser” or anything. Great recipe with cornstarch is to make your own gesso AND modge podge (same recipe for both is cup of water, cup of corn starch and cup of white or clear glue. If you want it to be colored or sparkly or both just add a drop or two of whatever acrylic paint andor any amount of glitter -that’s safe for the world and you!- to the mixture and mix to your desired thickness. It’s also a handy recipe for texture paste, with or without the glue 😉 😂).
Pretty sure it was last year when I bought raycons with your code, can't believe it's been a year already. I still love them, and they still work great.
You have no idea how much money you have saved me!! Your reviews are spot on, and watching your humor ( a bonus with either your hubby or sister, helping) make my day. ❤~Gina ~❤
It doesn't specify that the plastic is there, but it clearly says remove the paint strip, hence making it understood that it's not just the paint sheet. Also, the video you showed clearly shows them removing the paint strip from a plastic backin.
When I was younger I used to have these like purple strips of some sorts that I THINK were for sore throats. But they were kinda like thicker listerine strips. I think part of the gimmick with them for kids was they'd even turn your mouth purple or something? And seeing the paint strips really seemed to have unlocked the memories of using those and so I have a very strong instinct to put these in my mouth, oops

I see a lot of people in the comments saying that this is meant for primary school children and teachers and that it may actually be a blessing that the paint is transparent for easy cleaning ect. Often “cool gadgety type mechanisms” don’t work at all or as advertised, the actual art or craft supplies are dollar store quality or even less, and for the $20-$40 average these kits cost they are almost always missing out on tools, supplies or creative freedom (or all of the above!) Also- I know for a fact over the recent years Crayola has marketed themselves as not only being for kids but also the aspiring artists out there, and even producing “professional” products for advanced artists. At least in this video it looks like you could save probably $25 by going to the dollar store and getting poster paint and mixing it yourself. The quality seems the same. In my opinion even if you were buying these kits for your children you still wouldn’t want to waste your $30 on a crappy, flimsy piece of plastic. And for that price I believe you’d at least want your child to have some creative freedom and be able to use the item more than once.

I always kinda figured Crayola paints were supposed to be pretty transparent, so parents wouldn't have to buy completely different types of paint based on whether their kid is using a blank page or a coloring sheet
Ok I'm sorry but do NOT use cornstarch or flour in paints!! NEVER do that unless you don't care how your painting will look in a few years.. Using those can encourage mold and mildew growth on your paintings; They can also cause unsightly cracking and flaking over time! Not to mention it'll alter your colors..It can also affect the water-resistant qualities of some acrylic paints and make your paints gummier (and dry faster) when they dry making it hard to store and re-use. Instead you can use: Super Thick Gesso (It'll alter the color of your paint and dry to a matte finish), Acrylic Gel Medium (depending on the one you use it may give a different finish such as clear, opaque, matte, or gloss and it may alter your colors but most won't..so make sure to read the labels well), Modeling Paste (it'll alter the color), Baby (talcum) powder can be used but it may make your paint crumbly/brittle.. The Best thing to use to thicken paint is probably Acrylic Gel Medium! It gives a variety of finishes, it's texture can vary, it's quite customizable basically..and you can choose whether or not it affects the color or not (like whether or not your colors look a bit whitened).

Have you tried just adding corn starch directly to the paint instead of reducing it to the translucent paste? I think I've seena few videos where just adding the powder makes the paint wayy more opaque. Great video btw!

Paint strip technology which is just color dye absorbed into paper. . Of course adding an opac substance will create a thicker and less see through paint. I think this is made for children, and they are just excited to paint and make their own colors. I am just realizing we are judging these toys like they aren't made for 6 yr olds.. what is my life.
Ah Cayola, what would we do without you testing Jackie 😅 BTW, thanks to you, I got my husband a pair of Raycons (the fitness ones since he loves to run) he really enjoys them.
I Love ur vids!!!! Id love more with Moriah- i watched her before i saw ur collab, idk who I watched first but ever since middle school ive been watching you guys' vids and painting or crafting!!!
so its not the vintage one, the 2014 is when it was copyrighted :3 and all the molds are all the same, but the products are new since this is being re-produced
It probably wouldn't work with this kit anyway, but if you do want to thicken paints, make them go farther, I suggest using just cornstarch, don't like make a paste or anything, just put straight cornstarch into the paint.
I suspect that something like household paint mixing base might be a closer match to the cheap mixing paint from the kit or use a mixing white (zinc not titanium). Some sunscreens use zinc because it's relatively transparent. Mixing white is more tranlucent. Titanium is quite opaque which will give you those great pastels.
20:48 Jackie, you poor thing. You're so jaded by these kits that you think those paints aren't that bad 🥲 I can see how this kit would be a fun way for kids to learn about color mixing, though. I wonder if a better quality adult version of this exists.

The amount of laughing I went through watching this. You made my day for sure watching this Crayola Paint Machine.
Yeeeees! Crapola kits! please please more
“iNcLuDeS eVeRytHiNg YoU nEeD” and “figure it out” is my favorite lines😂
Paint strip technology which is just color dye absorbed into paper. . Of course adding an opac substance will create a thicker and less see through paint. I think this is made for children, and they are just excited to paint and make their own colors. I am just realizing we are judging these toys like they aren't made for 6 yr olds.. what is my life.
17:05 The ICONIC Nerdecrafter And Crayola Song

Jackie being multiple time s on the screen and singing: ,,Figure it out, hmmm, figure it out, hmmm." That´s all I needed today to laugh😂😂😂.

❤️❤️
But I am pretty sure that when the video for the paint strips was playing, you could see them peeling it off the plastic background…
so its not the vintage one, the 2014 is when it was copyrighted :3 and all the molds are all the same, but the products are new since this is being re-produced
I swear I saw someone (Jacky or someone in the craft community) do a video on this kit years ago when it first came out.
20:48 Jackie, you poor thing. You're so jaded by these kits that you think those paints aren't that bad 🥲
I can see how this kit would be a fun way for kids to learn about color mixing, though. I wonder if a better quality adult version of this exists.
Paint for bright colors have a clear base. Pastels have a white base.
jacky can you please consider trying the marker maker from crayola i haven’t seen you do it yet.❤
Yay! You’re doing crafts again!
The salt shaker should be red it is crayola after all lol love the crayola content all we need is sika with you an its like classic Jackie ❤❤❤
