    Concentration is a balancing requirement for 5e, to prevent buff spam from prior editions and to try to close the martial caster divide.
    But even with the concentration mechanic full casters still out perform martials with just decent spell picks.

    Oh, right, Baldur is right around the corner. Man thanks to your builds I got over 300 hours in Wrath of the Righteous, big thanks again for the awesome builds. I wonder what will we be able to cook in Baldur. The studio's previous games, mainly Divinity Original Sin 2, had some fun and interesting builds. Fingers crossed they don't disappoint this time!
    Oh and Solasta is nice, but I mostly enjoyed it in a coop with my brother and 2 of our friends. It was wacky, it was challenging (almost got wiped by the starting goblins) but it was fun.

    I prefer concentration mechanic over stacking 1363636536 buffs like in Pathfinder, this stacking slows the game so much; I spend over 2 minutes buffing everyone once I enter a map in WotR I think. Concentration requires you to actually choose your buffs instead.

    Anyway, glad you're covering Solasta since it's on my CRPG shortlist. Guess you'll be covering BG3 too then? There should be a whole heap of your videos out on it by the time I feel it's patched enough to give it a go. Sneak attack only once per round is based on the 5e version of sneak attack (which can be forgotten/not applied by many tables, but that's what it is raw)
    But yeah, Solasta being mostly focused on fights, the skill monkey part of the rogue isn't attractive, and a ranger will be much more optimal to play instead.

    • @VikCachat
      @VikCachat ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By raw you should be able to proc sneak attack from reactions as long as its another creatures turn in the same round.
      Sneak attack
      Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.
      Note once per turn not per round.
      Example of this would be if a rogue is under the haste effect. With his action the rogue could take the ready action; "attack x creature as soon as it makes a hostile act" (x creature should be within 5ft of an ally). Then the rogue attacks the same creature or different creature with the hasted action as long as you have advantage or ally within 5ft of the target. The rogue gets sneak attack on his turn and then when the conditons for the ready action are met and hits the creature will also proc sneak attack since it will be the target creatures turn (assuming conditions for sneak attack are still met).

    • @okagisama
      @okagisama ปีที่แล้ว

I'll be using them for the Palace DLC as well.

    If you can be bothered to spend the time rolling, monks and barbarians can be outstanding tanks if you max Dex/Wis or Dex/Con respectively, and if you can max 3 stats, decent damage dealers too. I think way of survival monks in particular are excellent as tanks. If you go with point buy, however, they are no even close. Agree on battle clerics being fantastic. I would give a shout out to Paladins as amazing single target damage dealers, particularly with oath of judgement if you have other warriors to benefit. I personally played with a shock arcanist as my arcane caster as the passive bonus to damage spells is nice, but I understand twin magic can be great.

    Ill probably pick it up again if they ever make the level cap 20

    • @cRPGBro
      @cRPGBro  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd also really like if there was official campaign support for level 20!
      I found the story/setting to be overall average as well which is understandable based on their budget, but the gameplay part is great fun.

    • @VikCachat
      @VikCachat ปีที่แล้ว

      The unfinished buisness mod can increase level cap to 20, it can also enable multiclassing adds more subclasses, and you can enable more races/subraces like variant human (free feat and plus 2 abilities score bonus).
      The combat system is very well done, and I think this is the only crpg that has implemented flying so close to the ttrp, you can select a point in space to fly to and just hover there raining down death.
      BG3 flying mechanics in the EA for example is limited to surface to surface movement and immunity to ground effects (eg. No hovering 60 feet above ground only a slight levitation above a surface). It's effectively a very long ranged jump with ground effect immunity. Not worth a 3rd level spell slot imo unless they change it before release, but I'm assuming its a divinity engine limitation.
      WOTR has no flying mechanics, just some flavored abilities like the gryphon shifter.

    If you want higher difficulty, then it might be more fun to skip all the cheese at the start. Like rerolling is busted (makes humans worthless). Skip the overpowered backgrounds such as giving armor to wizards, etc. Choose human and pick a fun character class to play and then rely more on your tactics and strategy to win. The only point of rerolling is to cheat right off the start. What's the point of having +1 if you can just reroll until you have all 18s? Lol

    @yenthewitch ปีที่แล้ว

    Ah, no variant human in Solasta? That's a shame. It makes humans really good in 5e tabletop, a bonus feat at level 1 is a big boost and worth the reduction in ability scores and no darkvision usually. Also you should only be getting a disadvantage on ranged attacks if the target is in total darkness, dim light should be present usually as torches and the light cantrip have 40yd dim light radius and mean that you only get disadvantage on perception checks. On tabletop we usually had a melee go in first with the light cantrip cast on them (usually a fighter or cleric) which removed ranged penalties for 40yds around the target.
    Sneak attack should be crucially once per "turn", not per round so if it's per round then that's not quite accurate to the 5e rules. That is, you can get sneak attack from an attack of opportunity on someone elses turn even if you already hit on your turn with sneak attack. Doesn't come up too often but rogues only get one attack per round and should ideally be usiing their bonus action to dash or disengage over an offhand attack.

  • @notalefty999
    @notalefty999 ปีที่แล้ว

    I gave this a go and its not bad. However, the combination of limited ability to buff AB, limited number of attacks per round and turn based combat really taught me to hate the D20 system. Missing in this game feels awful particularly if you get several in a row and the chance of this occurring is almost never trivial. I think 2D10 or 3D6 would work better to make getting very unlucky much less likely.
    Sylvan elves for me all the way for me too.

    Overall, it seems that your unusually attached to spike growth. I agree that it's a potent effect, but IMO it pales in comparison to the immense CC potential from other spells, and definitely doesn't earn the title of "best spell in the game" (That title 100% goes to Mind Twist, even after the nerf they gave it). Spike growth is a great pick at the point where you first get it, but quickly loses it's value once your sorcerer can perform an upcast heightened hold monster and instantly CC every major threat in the room. In general, the most potent effects in the game are ones that inflict paralyzed (IE Hold Monster) or unconscious (IE Eyebite) on an enemy, since attacks within 5ft. (1 tile) instantly crit unconscious or paralyzed targets.
    In a game where you can't stack a million buffs and debuffs on targets, the game becomes about finding the most powerful individual buffs (Greater Invisibility, Holy Aura, Blur) and the most debilitating individual debuffs (Mind Twist, Hold Monster, Eyebite, Slow). I think a great way to illustrate this is Haste. Haste is a spell that might at first appear to be a fantastic buff, with an extra action every round, but in reality it's kind of meh. The crux of why haste is bad comes down to the specific combination of it's downsides:
    1. Haste is a concentration spell
    2. When the spell ends, the target can't move or take actions until after its next turn
    This creates a number of problems. Because haste is a concentration spell and has such as debilitating effect if that concentration ends, it's very risky to use as a self buff, this means you need to have a separate caster maintaining concentration on the spell, which means its competing with their other concentration spells. Moreover, unlike with other concentration spells, said caster can't really afford to drop concentration on it to cast something else in the middle of combat, because of the aforementioned lethargy effect. Finally, the buff from haste is actually mathematically worse than the benefit you could get from other spells (Blur is a greater effective AC boost, Greater Invisibility is a better DPR boost since invisibility grants you advantage on all your attacks). The result of all of this is that Haste is almost never worth casting because it requires far too much commitment for the minor action economy boost it grants. The best concentration spells IMO are the ones that have very powerful, but short effects, rather than persistent effects that provide a minor impact, because of the effect juggling that you sometimes need to do in high level combat.

    • @pawep2966
      @pawep2966 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haste is amazing spell especially if it is casted by sorcerer. Also later you get access to haste potions so concentration is not a problem.

    • @theninjaguy2
      @theninjaguy2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pawep2966 IMO the sorcerer is the last person who should be casting haste. Haste doesn't really benefit from any of the metamagic options other than twinned spell (extend spell adding a minute is mostly negligible since most combat encounters don't last more than ten rounds anyway), and Solasta's 4 party limit means you don't really have room for two martials, plus I personally think sorcerers can get a lot more value out of crowd control spells since they can use Heightened Spell to inflict disadvantage on saving throws.
      I do agree that the potions of speed are indeed worth using, as well as Timekeeper warlock's Accelerate feature. I was specifically talking about the Haste spell, which in my opinion has too many downsides compared to other spells. IMO Haste should either not have the lethargy effect or not be concentration, the fact that you have to commit to keeping haste up throughout the entire combat is the thing that kills it in my opinion, since it restricts your caster's flexibility mid combat since they can't simply drop the spell if would be more advantageous to cast something else.
      Most other concentration spells can be dropped safely when a different spell needs to be cast, and most of the spells that have extra drawbacks to dropping concentration are highly powerful summon spells like Conjure Elemental or Summon Greater Demon. Haste is decent, but it just isn't powerful enough to warrant its debilitating drawback.

    • @pawep2966
      @pawep2966 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theninjaguy2 you should always have two martials like paladin/barbarian as a tank and rogue/ranger as ranged.
      My typical party always include raven(after level 9 haste means she can sneak attack another time - it's priceless)
      divine sorcerer for twinning spells like haste again, greater invisibility and aslo bless and healing word.
      Third spot is melee martial like palabard/sorcadin/bardbarian(depending on the multiclass can also get access to haste)
