There were a LOT of Scotsmen settling the South early in American history. It could also be from "firecracker", for a similar meaning or a guy with tons of energy. Where it gets _wild,_ is that the first baseball team in Atlanta was actually called the Atlanta Crackers -- the term had a similar kind of regional pride that "redneck" sometimes carries now, instead of being insulting. BUT, since this was pre-integration era in baseball, that also meant Atlanta had a Negro Leagues team called the _Atlanta Black Crackers,_ also known as the ABCs.
