Okay- this shows a combination of naivety and twisted analysis on my part. Late last night, knowing almost nothing of this series except the basic plot outline, I watched this clip, and was delighted by what I believed to be a daring narrative choice by the show's writers. I figured that as deep, deep-cover spies these individuals would have to have some sociopathic elements to be as effective at their work as they could be (and this had nothing to do with their being Russian, simply their being deep-covers agents of any nation). So, believing that the subtitles were part of the original broadcast, I assumed that the mother was having a moment where, regardless of her love for her daughter, she was letting an old bit of toughness slip out, knowing that it would go undetected by her spawn- and then the father, without missing a beat, given his own reflexive powers of deception, was saying the 'politic' fatherly thing. I thought it was such a brilliant narrative move. I came back to it today and found out that you were just bullshitting us, Jack. Touche! Loved it. Hilarious. Though I liked my initial impression better...
I don't watch this show but was curious about it and looking up clips, so for a minute I genuinely thought that was the correct translation and this woman subversively hated her daughter.

They should have used an actual Russian actress for this line and adjusted the sound character to resemble Keri Russell's voice, so Keri just need to lip-sync :)
I think in season three there was a scene where they dubbed Phillip when he was talking to Zenaida. They made the room really dark so you can't see his lips moving very well. It was disorienting because the voice was way deeper than his and brought me out of the scene.
Can any Russian speaker tell me if that is good or bad Russian? I'm no linguist but it sounds a bit un-natural and forced. Native speakers have a "flow" to their language. Few people have the talent of understanding this flow or tone of different languages so it sounds artificial.
I listened to panels about the real Russian peakers cas in the other parts. I am second generation American descendant from former USSR and live in a Brooklyn neighborhood with a lot of first generation Americans from former USSR now independent countries. What I found remarkable was that Phillip and Elizabeth had no accents AND no grammatical "tells." That is took a suspension of disbelief, but sticking with saying "E-liz-a-beth" was a funny way to not fit in.
