I Stepped On A RATTLESNAKE While Filming & Survived!

  • While walking through a forest, I was filming a video and stepped right on a rattlesnake that was blended in with some leaves and rocks right on the trail. On this video you can hear the rattlesnake rattle loudly right when I step on it, and if you pause the video right when it happens and zoom in on the ground you can see the rattlesnake right under me.

@@nature10879 Funny, I lived in the desert for so many years, I got into the habit of banging my hiking boots together every morning, just in case something had decided to “move in” while I was sleeping…
Well, now I live in Yellowstone (where there are no scorpions), and I still bang my hiking boots together before I put them on. I guess I did that for so many years when I lived in the desert, that I just got in the habit of doing that. I guess it’s probably not a bad thing to do.😉

I came across your channel today, and I'm now subscribed. I live in Sierra Vista, AZ. I was out out at Empire Ranch last summer and was on a small path between building. I was about two feet from a rattle snake before I saw it. He/She never rattled; it crossed right in front of me. Scared me to death, almost. They do blend in well. This Diamondback was at least five feet and fat. But you are right, if you get outside, you're going to encounter stuff. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad you are safe.

Glad you're OK. I didn't grow up in rattlesnake country, but I've read they don't always rattle, and many times when they do bite it's a dry bite, no venom. I've also read that as long as you can get to medical care withing a short period of time Docs have antidotes.

I came upon a rattler called a mohave green, it didn't rattle it was all the way across a six foot wide dry creek bed so it was about seven to eight feet long. Mohave greens are aggressive and will strike with no warning and I watched this snake watching me and coming up to make a lunge. I wish I had the foresight to take a picture of it. I stayed away from that area for a while. The funny thing I'd, I'm always warned about rabid foxes, javolinas, Coyotes and other animals.

I'm 61 . I still love hiking ,kayaking, mountain biking ..All that jazz, but when I do go hiking, I take walking sticks because I take kind of cliffy mountain bike trails. There's a lot of rock and stuff .
Holy crap I'm addicted to those walking sticks now.
I don't know if you'd ever want to get any ,but boy that would be good because you kind of push the sticks forward before you take a step and then that way if there's snakes, they would probably at least start rattling or you would smack them with the stick before your foot would.
I don't know .I'm just kind of brainstorming but I do like my walking sticks. They've kept me from sliding around on those crazy cliffy trails I take 😁
Well keep on keeping on girly, keep on hikin❤️🌻🫶✌️

the darn things are so well camouflaged..you just can't see them...i used to live in an area where they were present...walking quickly on crunchy grass and sticks was risky as you couldn't hear the rattle until too late...if you walked slowly and didn't make too much noise ,as you mentioned, you would hear the rattle long before you came up on it.

With resilience you reacted perfectly jumping your feet away at a distance beyond the strike zone. You had promptings about it minutes before? I am like you with a virtually connected spirit. There are 13 different types of rattlesnakes in Arizona. The most of any state. I would defintely look into getting layered
rattlesnake boots. Now in Nevada the Southwestern Speckled rattler is most commonly encountered in a rocky wash
just like where you stumbled upon one. Comes in various colors and blends in quite well into it's surroundings. Glad you
made out OK there Sarah! Even Indiana Jones fears snakes! He may be just a fearless fictitious hero that carries a gun

they dont always rattle-- i had one in camp i stepped right in front of him in teh strike zone-- i only saw him as he just slightly twitched. i thought it was a bull snake at fist until i moved him with teh shovel and he went ballastic--- i spent three years in this camp never saw a snake other than one bull snake,, . and another snake was ina log, but it sounded like a ciccadia... never go picking up wood at night especially if you are alone and been a few brews,, that would have sucked if i got bit.

Also look up when in mt.lion or black bear country. Black bears can also be brown. Griz have rounder ears & a larger hump. Harkening back to days when I was young, and my late Dad had a subscription to "Outdoor Life" magazine, I recall reading an article, wherein, during a tour of a sugar plantation, the writer and the sugar farmer, toured the cane fields. Just ahead of the mounted writer and the sugar farmer was an old man brushing the trail just ahead ... Every now and again the writer heard a distinct sound: "tink" ... And he also heard the old field hand mumbling something just before he heard the sound of "tink" ... After touring the plantation, the writer ambled his horse over the the old field hand and asked "What was that sound ... that "tink" sound I heard ... and, you seemed to be saying something each time before I heard that sound ... " The old field hand smiled, lifted up has loose trouser legs, revealing stove pipe tin wrapped around his ankles and calves ... The old field hand said "Each time, as we were all a-walkin' the field, and I was-a beatin' the brush, I'd happen' onto a snake ... When I saw that snake I'd say "Yur gonna break yer tushes on me, snake," and they would, after dey struck at me whilst I's wearin' my stove-pipe tin." ... Glad you survived your encounter, Jeepsy ... If you shop Etsy, I recommend you look up Bald Mt. Moccasins/Boots ... Prices vary, but, based on the material cost and the quality, you couldn't ask for a better pair of snake-proof footwear, particularly if you invest in the 10-button moc/boot like I did back in `87. Safe travels, Jeepsy ... BTW ... I know you approve of travelling armed, so, my sidearm of choice is the Taurus Arms "Judge," which handles Colt .45 and 410 shotgun rounds ... A great "snake killer," if you should need it, loaded with 410 shotgun shells.

This kind of reminded me of an old joke I heard as a teenager. When in bear country wear bells on your feet to let them know something is coming, always holler if you see a bear, and carry bear spray. And while you are out there and see bear scatt on the trail use a stick to look through it to determine what kind of bear it is. If it is a grizzly, it often has bells in it and smells like bear spray. lol

You say "pack"...it's actually a family unit.
They don't run in packs... just like wolves...
If you see more than one they will usually be related and never hunting humans. If your dumb enough to take them a snack(your pet), that's on you.
They are always operating on instincts, just like humans should be. But humans have been brainwashed into ignoring their animal instincts by cults of various ferocity.
Smart humans rely totally on their "animal instincts" and don't believe some voodoo cult faith to protect or save them.

I am always cautious when hiking on trails but eventually I run into snakes. I am not a fan of killing them on sight but I will encourage them to move off the trail gently. Mosquitoes are a different story. Glad you weren't bit. I try to think like a snake and if I think they are trying to warm up I am more cautious. I was on a nature hike at a reservoir that was being filled and the leaders were some herpetologist types and the nature hike quickly turned into a snake catching event. They just so happen to have some pillow cases. Anyway, it was hot and we had just captured a big beautiful rattlesnake in a pillow case and it was rattling like crazy. The snake guys were worried because an over excited snake can have a heart attack which I did not know. Anyway, my only comment was, "You know that snake is a reptile?" So we doused it with cold water and the rattling significantly decreased. It was an "interesting" nature hike.

How is the snake? I've never heard a rattlesnake rattle. I was fishing one time on the bank of a swamp when one came swimming up and came to the shore a few feet from me. I had always wanted to hear one rattle so I popped her in the head with the end of my rod. She just looked around so I popped her again. Well, she just slithered up the bank and around me. I popped her several more times but she just slid on around me and went off into the woods. Never did coil up or rattle. I don't kill snakes just for the hell of it. I usually only see black racers and chicken snakes around here and I let them go, but try to keep them out of the chicken coops.

It might be hard to remember in the moment, but it would be better to stop walking when you do that. I bet that snake was cussing pretty hard, too. It might have been lethargic after a big meal.
When I was 12, my buddy was bitten by a rattlesnake. He ended up losing half of a middle finger -- he couldn't flip people off with that hand anymore, but he could pretend he had his finger most of the way up his nose.

My wife stepped on a Rattlesnake on our property back in 2009 and got bit on the ankle. She spent 3 days in ICU and went through the antivenom treatment. She said it felt like an ice pick going in. She is Ok, but has some lingering nerve pain. Be careful they are not warning us ahead of time here either! Glad you're OK! BTW - You can have your Dog trained to smell, see and hear Rattlesnakes. We watched our Dogs behaviour constantly after they were trained and they knew when a rattlesnake was close by. Great advice about NOT wearing Headphones while hiking! Steve

I’d be crying by now. I’m so glad your ok. I stepped on a wet rope one night in the dark right around a corner of my husbands race shop. I was screaming so much, my husband came out around the corner to see why I was screaming. I shook for hours. I couldn’t sleep that night without shaking. Unreal.
Sarah, God bless you honey. I’m so glad your baby wasn’t with you. I’m so glad you are alright.
I don’t know if you want to but if I was you avd it’s not too far away I’d go buy a lottery ticket. Cause you are so blessed. And lucky. God was looking out for you. Be sure to thank him!

According to the US Forest Service website, "Rattlesnake bites are rarely fatal with less than 1 in 600 resulting in death, and approximately 33 percent not containing injection of venom at all. However, you should assume for your own sake that venom has been introduced and always seek treatment. There are over 2700 different Breeds of Snakes in the world."

I don’t believe the forest service...I only know of a handful of people that have been bit but 100% got a venom injection. Highway Patrol brings anti venom from larger hospitals to our small hospital. Neighbor’s dog gets bit nearly every year...he gets a shot at the vet (don’t know what he gets) but he is pretty stiff/slow for a few days, but he always recovers.

Snakes that live in areas where they are hunted are learning not to rattle to remain hidden from people hunting them. Your angel was watching out for you! Don’t let this stop you from enjoying the outdoors. If this would have happened to me. I would need to stop in town and clean my laundry. Lol

When I'm out West, Ain't trusting no mountain lion ... so carry a 357 ... also carry a 357 in Florida but that's because Florida is Florida...

*Tennis shoes would not have helped much at all.
Rattlesnakes move to the edge of trails in the morning to warm up.
They’re very drowsy when cold, and try to reserve their energy for hunting. But juveniles are known to be more aggressive, they haven’t yet learned to reserve energy. Tread carefully Anywhere in Arizona.

3 things for the hikers out there, 1, getting a ANTI VEMON SHOT FOR THOSE HIKES, the cost is around 40-60.00 , but it WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE, 2, HIKERS WEAR YOUR SNAKE GAITERS not the chins guards like the baseball catchers wear REAL SNAKE GAITERS, ONLINE AROUND 30.00 A PAIR, i know there people out there hikers, fisherman, etc, that are saying to TO HELL WITH THOSE THINGS, ? but the different is life or death , example, without the shot and your still been bit with the leg gaiters on, less then 6 hrs of life to a hospital, with the shot 24-30 hrs, not bad for a 50.00 shot, you ll have to go to the hospital for the treatment ,but YOUR LIVE! 3 A WALKING STICK PREFER A STICK TALLER THEN YOU , THE WALKING STICK IS A WEAPON AGAINST OTHER ANIMALS IN THE BUSH ON A HIKE, , MINE HAS A KNIFE ON THE TOP POINT , SIMPLY TURN IT AROUND AND ITS BETTER THAN NOTHING,? TO NOTE: A SIMPLE WALK IN THE BUSH OR ON A HIKING TRAIL IS FUN , BUT YOU HAVE TO BE PREPARED,, FOR NATURE TO BITE YOU

I had a snake that was getting on the branches near my Hummingbird feeder trying to get my birds ... I looked at it's eyes and the pupils were round ...so I grabbed the snake and told it to stop messing with my hummingbirds and put it across the street.... the 3rd time, I told the snake, " 3 strikes and you should be OUT, but, I'm giving you one last chance, not to come back ... That worked for over a year ...then it came back ... This time, I wasn't able to grab it ... but, (during the other encounters, I thought the snake was rattling the leaves to mimic a rattlesnake) ... this time, it was on a bicycle frame rattling its tail ... turns out, I've been catching a Timber Rattlesnake 😳‼️ ... after a little research, under dim lighting conditions, poisonous snakes eyes will be round 💯
I'm in W. Tennessee ... I've been an outdoors person for at least 50 years of my life.

We Texas and Oklahoma girls dont wear cowboy boots and shorts for nothing. But seriously if you know your in Rattlesnake territory wear some boots and walk heavy because the vibration on the ground is what warns them. They do NOT always rattle especially if they are taken by surprise.

EeeGads! I'm good 'n paranoid now! MONTANA HAS "Western Rattlesnakes" UP TO 5 FEET. They're literally EVERYWHERE in the western U.S.. "Timber Rattlers" (a few) even back east up into New England, and down through MOST ALL of Georgia, to Florida (Eastern Diamond Back). It wasn't fun wading through those Georgia swamps up to chest level either! Savannah has VERY BIG ALLIGATORS also, as you know.
Yeah, it sucked. But someone has to do "these things" to keep us all safe at night. Often under only New moonlight too!
A few years ago here in Cali, pounding in tree fertilizer stakes, in summer shorts, I lowered my right knee down to within 6" on top of a small rattler (only looked closer, as I didn't want to "scrape" my knee). HE got the dead blow hammer, INSTEAD of the tree spike. They're fast too. I now carry a .38 with snake shot all summer on "the acreage". I've seen them change MANY colors fast too. You CAN'T see them. That one, just didn't see YOU either Sarah!
When you get to working on your new land, FIRST thing you MUST do is get SAFE (for Lil'One) RODENT bait stations. THAT'S how you get rid of the vast majority of rattlers. Which you definitely WANT to reduce the numbers of. It's really the only way. No food, FAR less rattlers. Do so. I haven't seen one in 3 years now.
Reality bites, as does MOST of nature! Including us. As REAL as the "birds and the bees"! EVERY LAST THING reproduces, and in big numbers too!
