Persona 3 Reload: The Reaper Level 16/Single Persona/No NG+ (Merciless) [No DLC]

- Thanks for the support on this video I noticed it sort of blew up with engagement which never really happened to me before! I love to break megaten games in ways nobody else does so if that's your thing feel free to stick around! I am currently the only one to have pulled off this strategy at all and especially at this low lvl
Me and @cantthinkofbettername5065 had been discussing strategies for a few different challenges, he's a dataminer and is always super helpful when calculating odds or looking into the AI of enemies and a bunch of stuff, after realising something about the reaper we knew it was hypothetically possible to manipulate his AI and beat him at the lowest possible level with no ng+. He also made the amazing thumbnail so huge shoutout to him!
In comparison to my Lavenza Level 1 fight I'm unsure where to rank this. Possibly harder but hard to tell. I knew mathematically it was possible but it combines AI Manipulation and a lot of luck. I'll explain the strategy
Whenever you are under an ailment like fear or confusion the Reaper will ALWAYS try to exploit your vulnerability with physical attacks so by keeping yourself feared with Weird Takoyaki the reaper will hit himself. The chance of being feared is very low and there is a high chance that with no ailment on you die, this took around 25 tries.
The first half of the fight is fast. He'll open with some sort of move to exploit a team member usually Mitsuru and will Primal Force with a 1 more, usually this ends up with all teammates dead but sometimes one can live and very rarely I had all survive. His final move will be Heat Riser always. After he will spam single target phys moves as long as you are under fear.
The second half of the fight he will start with an Insta-Kill then follow up with a single target phys and from then on providing you are feared he will use Akasha Arts or Vorpal Blade then follow up with an insta-kill. Homunculus is okay for surviving those however it removes your ailment so I chose Archangel for a specific reason. (You can also choose Gurulu at this level).
Abusing mutations you can essentially choose almost any 4 skills in the game you want so here I chose Repel Slash, Repel Strike, Repel Pierce, Null Dark. Archangel naturally nulls Light so it would stop the homunculus taking away my ailments and creating more needless rng. If you choose Gurulu you'd go for Null Light instead.
Then the other 4 moves must come either from the persona or skill cards so looking at the ones currently accessible I went for Arrow Rain and I will explain why. Rakunda to make the Repels deal more to the Reaper. Stagnant Air, this was supposed to increase the odds of items inflicting ailments however it doesnt seem likely, same with using Fear boost ring and Ailment boost which I had tried previously, the results seemed to be the same odds regardless. And the final skill was just a dodge passive but it never triggered in attempts ever.
My Full Build:
MC Level 16: (Can be as low as 14 mandatory fights only but I accidentally fought guardians without Akihiko and gained too much exp. I used the skip to reach the Reaper tutorial floor and missed out all Arqa part 2 guardians though)
Archangel - Level 10:
Arrow Rain (Sword 4)
Rakunda (Sword 3)
Stagnant Air (Sword 3)
Dodge Elec (Sword 4)
Repel Slash (Tier 7, Mutated)
Repel Strike (Tier 7, Mutated)
Repel Pierce (Tier 7, Mutated)
Null Dark (Tier 6, Mutated)
It takes a long process of fusing back and forth till your moves mutate up and up and getting money required for the items and personas necessary is tedious since you can only do a few fights and you need those for shuffle time cards so doing it this low is a very tedious and tight process.
Equipment:
Weapon: Gladius (+10hp)
Armour: Rash Guard (Not important)
Shoes: Inline Skates (+3 Ag but not important)
Accessory: Earrings of Grit (Endure)
At level 16 if you use the computer to give you +7hp and Gladius for +10 that takes your max hp over 200. This is important to lower rng as Weird Takoyaki heals for 100hp and you cannot use it to try and fear yourself if you are max hp. So you go into the fight at 1hp which allows you 3 uses till you reach full health instead of 2. Arrow Rain is the highest hp costing move we have access to at this part of the game so if we do reach max hp and are feared we can attempt to use it to lower our health to allow us to reapply a Weird Takoyaki after it wears off. Sometimes it's better to go for a Rakunda for the more damage especially if you have Endure left which will leave you back at 1hp and allow for more Takoyaki's. Theoretically it is possible without Archangel or Gurulu my original attempts were with Nekomata but the IKs taking away my ailments made the fight longer and much more luck intensive and it's heavily rng based as it is. You can go into the fight as low as level 14 like I said but really there is no difference in the strategy at all.
Thanks for watching and enjoy more masochism! ♡
A lot of people don't seem to know what skill mutations are or how it works. It's briefly in the description but I'm making this a pinned comment so I can just keep referring people to it. I will explain the full strategy in order to mutate anything you want at any level and how the Reaper AI works so anyone can try this for themselves.
First just know it will take a lot of saving and reloading and second a lot of money. I did this at minimum level so up until this area it was a mandatory fights only run, with the occasional fight to gain skill cards once I hit Arqa. The Reaper spawns F62 first so you cant fight him lower level so by missing all fights possible I could stay low levelled. Once I beat Emperor and Empress I used the guardian skip method showcased in my other video to stop gaining exp from any guardian in the 2nd half of Arqa. Doing all this meant I barely gained money so in order to get money I worked jobs and smashed breakables to sell materials. 99x of all Thebel materials can net you over 100k yen in a single tartarus trip and that's excluding other chest items and when you hit Arqa you can get even more. After accumulating a ton of money you then fuse 2 personas. Any 2 it doesn't matter since the 4 skills I wanted are passives any persona can inherit them. You can use skill cards you have to fill empty slots in your personas to allow the full 4 moves to pass down.
Essentially you save and fuse until a tier 1 skill mutates into a tier 2. Then you take this new persona and fuse it with anything else until that tier 2 skill mutates into a tier 3. Then 4, 5 and 6. Any time a mutation did not happen I simply reloaded to save money. Repel Passives are tier 7s so at this point it becomes a bit more tedious in that you need the mutation to be the exact skill you want but its the same thing you reset until the tier 6 mutates into Repel Strike for example. Now you can mutate another skill upwards and as long as every fusion you make sure to pass down Repel Strike you will keep it. Eventually after hours of resets you will get Repel Strike, Repel Slash, Repel Pierce and Null Dark. Null Dark is tier 6 so it's the same you just need to do it lower than the repels.
Once you have all 4 moves I just found a fusion combination that ended with the result being Archangel and pass all 4 of them down and there is your triple repel Archangel. It's impossible to mutate more than 4 this low level but with special fusions you can do 5. But anymore than 5 is strictly not possible. The other 4 moves were put on via skill cards that are obtainable at this point in the game.
Now for the fight itself. Essentially if you are under the fear condition (or any conditon that increases the probability of crits) the reaper will try to exploit you by ALWAYS using a physical move. He picks his move before his target so when solo it is exceedingly rare he will target your weakness normally. However when exploiting you his AI doesn't look for passives so here we use Weird Takoyaki in an attempt to keep ourselves under a constant state of fear. The 2 issues are it's a low chance to happen so this is very rng based even if you have the setup correct and if you are at full hp you cannot use the item. To mitigate the first one we enter the fight at 1hp to allow us 3 uses of Weird Takoyaki and give ourself a physical move, we use this when at full hp in order to drain it back down to allow us another use, there is luck in this too in that when under the fear condition you have a chance to not act. Any other time we have a free turn we use Rakunda to debuff the Reaper to make him take more damage. The first half of the fight he will use 2 single target physical moves of any type randomly with the highest chance being a Slash at 50.5%, Strike being 25% and Pierce being 24.5% except on a 1 more he will always Primal Force in this scenario.
When you hit the last half of his hp he will use either Vorpal Blade or Akasha Arts with Vorpal Blade being a 50.5% chance and Akasha Arts being 49.5% meaning Pierce Repel is not needed at this part of the run since he will never use it. The problem with choosing a persona for this section is his second move per turn he will use an Instant Kill move which will always hit you. This isn't the end of the world as homunculus will save you, however doing so will remove your fear condition and that creates a ton more rng having to reapply fear every single turn so here I used Archangel as he naturally Nulls Light. Remember I can only mutate 4 skills maximum so my 4th skill is Null Dark to prevent insta kills from removing my status ailment. Then it's just pray that rng is in your favour. Hope that clears up anything ♡
Just curious, did you reset for every single fusion that didn't mutate? The chance of mutation on a given fusion is multiplied depending on how many fusions you've done on the current day (up to 5x after 50 fusions), so it should actually save you time/money if you allow some failures.
I kept going if a different skill mutated so like say I was at tier 6 going for a repel and a tier 2 mutated to tier 3 I kept that since that would help with another. I knew about the mutation and accidents increasing every 10 fusions in increments but CTOBN who originally datamined it all told me it resets after a success so that would just mean more money wasted but potentially faster mutations since I wouldnt need to reset and could gain the multiplier. But honestly got a bit lazy and tired of smashing items to sell for money since that took such a long time and since I had a "low" amount I really need each fusion to have a mutation and count for something
@@Ziroikabi Hmm, the counter resets after a success? Strange, that hasn't been my experience... I can definitely relate to the "smashing items sucks" part though 🙃
A few small corrections. For one, the counter resets each in-game day. I'm not sure when I gave the impression that it was after a success (or if it was before or after I figured out what the counter was), but I apologize for that.
Second, a bit more detail on the Reaper's AI targeting. It will specifically check for if a party member has "Confuse" or "Fear" (though the distinction between that and what Ziro said is only relevant for getting Frozen/Shocked randomly or being dizzied after a knockdown, as you cannot self-inflict Distress). If that condition is met, despite only doing this behavior in response to Fear and Confuse, he will then lock himself into a physical move that targets a party member with any standard ailment (if above half HP, otherwise it's AoE anyways. Also "Standard ailment" in this case means excluding Downed, Dead, Orgia Mode, and Overheat).
This means that (for example), if you have just a party member with Poison, he will not do this behavior. However if you have a party member with Fear and another party member with Poison, then he will do this behavior, but can target either of those party members.
Is fear the only debuff that weird takoyaki can give?
the fact that reaper fully went ballistic on mitsuru after her cool intro screen is so funny to me lol
His AI seems to prioritise her first so 9/10 she'd die first before even getting a turn. Unsure as to why but sometimes it would let Mitsuru have a turn before the reaper it was rare but it happened this attempt. I wonder if it is due to her never having used her persona by this point but not sure. And that Junpei counter was amazing, the only time it ever triggered in all attempts
@@Ziroikabi To speak from my PoV on this, this isn't a "seems to" thing. When the reaper attempts to target weaknesses (which he always does action 1 of turn 1), he will always check if Mitsuru is present before checking for anyone else, and if he detects someone when checking for weaknesses he will go for that weakness 51 times out of 101 (except for Ken, who he will always go for). In addition to that, if he fails the 51/101 all 3 times (which can only happen if Ken isn't present), the random attack he does instead is more likely to incidentally be fire than anything else (aside from Slash or Strike I guess), though the target for it in that scenario would be just non-null rather than Mitsuru specifically.
@@Ziroikabinah the Reaper just targets her first, It happened to me just the other day.
she's just a girl
"Let me show that i haven't lost my touch. LET'S GO! PENTHESILE- ⚰️"
The hilarity of the start holy shit, seeing Mitsuru have her initial "I'm far stronger than you'd ever believe" cutscene while casting Rakunda, and then being fucking annihilated with Agidyne for like 1600 damage 😭😭
I'm not quite sure why but occasionally Mitsuru would outspeed the reaper. It only happened a few times in all my attempts, I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact she hadn't used her persona by this point but it's hilarious that both that and Junpei counter happened on the winning try

Im so confused lol how does archangel reflect all physical damage, block light and dark, and what does the takoyaki have to do with this? 😂
OH lol nvm im dumb. I just dont understand how you got all those moves so early on and what the takoyaki did, does fear manipulate his AI somehow?
Lol. Nvm again. I see the video description 🤦♂️
@@briandorough498 Being inflicted with fear and dizzy prompts the reaper's AI to use physical moves on the aflicted target to do a knockdown, you can get mutations for passive moves by doing fusions, so for example if you have a "dogde pierce" passive, it has a chance to evolve into "evade pierce", if you keep evolving it, it will reach "repel pierce", that process can be repeated for other 3 skills (since archangel is a low level persona, it can only evolve a max of 4 skills, but high level personas can evolve 5).
When developers rewards you for making the impossible.

Lvl 99 fuuka is so actually nice!!! Cause a lot of sp for scans and full access to her abilities
We don’t understand how rng works in reload yet but if we found a way to manipulate skill mutations like in persona 5 and 4 this could become part of the speedrun. Not just for level 99 early on and access to Siegfried but also like you said all Fuuka abilities early would make tartarus much faster as well!
@@Ziroikabiwhy Siegfried?
@@lenblackquill8608 Siegfried is easily the best middle tier persona in the game. He competes with all the level 80+ super personas while just passively learning good skills for a slash build. Your strategy here was really impressive, and the amount of prep to do this is insane…
That being said I think Junpei was the real MVP of this fight.
i decided to look at your channel after seeing this vid and like… man i thought i was starting to get somewhat knowledgeable in persona and your channel completely humbled me 😭 great job though!
Lmao thanks I appreciate this a lot! I just feel like 99% of popular persona videos are generic build videos or min max things which, while cool to see isn't really impressive at all. I'm not exactly great at content creation but I just like doing dumb challenges that nobody else will do and comments like this always make my day and motivate me to do more!
“Let me show you that I haven’t lost my touch” *dies instantly*
Damn not getting a Megidolaon spam after all the Repels is insane. Crazy good manipulation of the Reaper's AI.
Fun fact he will only Megidolaon in 2 situations (that i know of) If the first move his turn was Virus Breath the second will always be Megidolaon. Or if he used Concentrate the prior turn.
But since we are feared which gives a high chance for him to crit us the AI will try to exploit that and only spam physical moves. His AI actually picks its move before the target so it never checks for passives or attack/magic mirrors. Even with my strategy it involved getting lucky with self fear and took around 25 attempts total
@@Ziroikabi I've seen that his AI is a lot more forgiving in Reload. In FES if you used Tetrakarn or Marakarn he would immediately cast Megidolaon to bypass that, and while I never used Tetra/Mara or Attack/Magic Mirror in Reload due to being single member-only, Ken's Divine Intervention Theurgy in Reload doesn't trigger Megido despite essentially fulfilling the same purpose.
Yeah in FES you can just use Thunder Reign or Thunder Call to cheese him then. But that requires you be a high enough level to get Thor or Odin. Mutations work a bit different in FES compared to Reload but I may try and do a minimum possible level reaper win on that too

So i can tell you manipped the ai into using physical moves with fear. But would you have lost if he'd used 1 more magic attack?
Still crazy that this is possible though, and Mitsuru dying immediately like that after her cutscene is hilarious
Yeah. I had earrings of grit which endures 1 hit but it got used up. As long as I kept feared it was fine he would only use physicals (insta kills as well if he was in phase 2) whenever it wasnt on I was at risk of dying essentially
you do the most insane things and i’m all here for it
Me watching the video:
USE A MAGIC ATTACK OR SOMETHING YOU STUPID AI
We purposefully fear ourselves so the AI tries to exploit your vulnerability with a physical move to crit you so as long as fear is active he will never ever use magic

theres a similar exploit in P5R, where you use a ring of gluttony to force the reaper to spam megidolaon every turn.
@@howisthis8849 a lot of bosses have that. It’s not really an exploits its just ring of gluttony gives you a mirror for an attack. A lot of secret bosses will just spam almighty if you have a mirror up to bypass it
This video is absolutely marvelous
Congrats, that's a great strategy
Arahabaki is proud
"Finally hes almost dead- GOD DAMMIT"
I love how brain dead the comments on this video are. Yes, the game is extremely easy if you "exploit" the extremely rng heavy Skill Change system in fusions with a less than 1 in 20 change rate while constantly rerolling skills until you miraculously get the THREE skills you absolutely need for this to work (which took 25 attempts according to the video) so a ton of save scumming is required for this strat.
PLUS, knowing the weird datamined ai shenanigans of The Reaper and how he interacts with very specific ailments that you couldn't know without a tremendous amount of trial and error without looking it up.
You guys are definitely 5D chess masters and aren't pulling shit out of your asses. I swear to god SMT fans think they are the greatest RPG players who ever walked the earth and when someone comes up with a genuinely impressive workaround that took hours and hours to do your first thought it "GAME EZ. GAME BROKE 👎🏼"
@@KaptainFalkon the battle itself took about 25-30 attempts with the setup. Mainly due to Weird Takoyaki having very low odds to self fear. The save scumming mutation chains took hundreds if not thousands of resets, basically more time than 99% of the player bases entire game time just to get these mutations. (Literally over 100 hours)
First had to do minimum battles possible which was easy, then when this section of tartarus unlocked because this floor is the earliest the reaper spawns. I had to do the alt tab pc skip I showcased in my other video that allows you to skip past all the tartarus guardians of that zone by inducing lag to bypass the fight triggers. I could have done it for Thebel guardians too however due to exp scaling if you do 0 fights before Priestess and Emperor & Empress using the skip you actually get more levels in the end
So then i needed to get over 100,000 yen without doing any battles for all the fusions I was going to need to do and rebuying personas back from the compendium. 99 of every thebel material from breakables gives around 130,000 from selling.
Then generally if you get a mutation it goes up 1 tier. (Not always sometimes it can go up 2 in rare circumstances or sometimes it will drop a tier or stay the same tier but most often it increases a tier)
Because I’m a low level eventually the persona im mutation chaining on reaches my mc level so I then need to actually stop chaining 1 fusion before then fusion accident and pray i get a very low level persona i can chain again. Accident results are entirely based on -10 -> +1 of MCs level (ingredients dont matter)
Sadly due to the save loads I don’t have an accurate exact time this took but I’d argue this is more impressive than my challenge run when i beat the game solo, orpheus only, mandatory fights only, merciless.
@Ziroikabi That's what I was thinking as someone who did a second playthrough, actually delving into min maxing this time around and holy balls the rng is so bad for so many skills. I cannot imagine how long it would've taken at such a low level with limited resources. The tedium had to have been the hardest part of the challenge for sure.
Wow! @cantthinkofbettername5065 is the real Fuuka, isn't it?
This is interesting. How’d you get a tier 7 skills to mutate for, when the earliest you can get a Tier 7 skill-having Persona is on level 40 (Vidyaraja’s Blessing from DLC’s Cendrillon)? This is according to the fusion calc’s skill list table ofc
Skill mutations. Fuse 2 personas to upgrade the tier by 1. Fuse off the result to something else till that upgraded move mutates again to higher tier. Lots of save scumming and time was involved obviously. And you can only pass down 4 moves at once so the maximum I could have is 4 moves being the 3 repels and 1 null dark. The other 4 moves were skill cards obtainable that early
Bro took all the exp for himself
Me who thought that beating reaper on level 50 was badass 😅😅😅
Never thought of using takoyaki or musle drink to do that
Great job on showing the reaper who's boss 👍👍👍
You are a madman.
Meanwhile in the background you can hear "stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself"
Certified "why are you hitting yourself?" build
Level 99 from 1 fight lmao
im on lvl 39 now i can fuse girimehkala with some repel but for some reason he weak to dark can we withstood those attack eventually?
edit: i don't really want to waste all my money on those endure accessories so will muscle drink useful for poison?
Poison doesn’t increase crit chance so it wont manipulate his AI into going for phys. You can farm homunculi to stop yourself dying from Light/Dark insta kill but using homunculus removes your ailment making it a ton more rng because in phase 2 you’ll need to spam reapply ailments every turn. (The odds of getting a self inflict ailment is around 20% so its very luck based even if you only need to do it once every 4 turns)
He usually will just Primal Force on a one more so theoretically you dont need to block light and dark buuutt its luck based even with blocking it so without your chances are likely worse than 1/5000 odds of a successful attempt

You automatically get J shuffle times from beating the reaper since he is a special encounter. He’s classed as a final block enemy

Oh definitely. Speedrunners can get to endgame in around 10 hours on merciless. It took me MUCH longer than that just to do the mutating alone. Even a casual playthrough would likely be faster to fight the reaper lol
Two megidoloans and It would be over in instant xD
Thanks to AI manipulation he would never megidolaon. That's why we fear ourself on purpose so he thinks he can exploit you with a physical move and it just repels back
Nah bro definitely paid the reaper.
I thought the Reaper would randomly use an Almighty elemented attack or maybe I'm thinking of P5 I guess.
He only uses Megidolaon in 2 states. If he is concentrated or his first attack was Virus Breath. He never checks for mirrors or passives in reload lol. There are also a bunch of AI checks he does when someone is feared but Atlus made it a guarantee to attempt to crit and put that as the priority. So none of the other AI checks ever happen lol
@Ziroikabi I gotcha and that's neat to know!

Thank you stranger.
That button will eventually be mine.
hi!! i just wanted to say thank you for this video ^^ I've just finished getting all the skill mutation needed and apparently save scumming helps a lot instead of trying to keep doing fusion if the previous one didn't get you one!! (wasted a lot of money)
but i did get a lot of great skills and actually got a lot of magic mastery (i did reload my save tho so i didn't waste money) but now I'm just grinding more money to buy the accessory and I'll update if necessary! thanks again!!
how you get the skill mutation?
Omg that lucky with the last evil smile

"Haha, one!"
All of the cringy comments are making fun of Kirijo for some f***ing reason while I’m just trying to mimic the strategy
I’m guessing having a status effect causes the Reaper to use physical attacks which then allowed you to repel them and with Archangel naturally having null light, you just needed null dark to complete the build that would nullify his light and dark spells. A surprisingly effective strategy indeed.
Yeh any ailment that gives increased crit chance like fear/confusion/distress. We use fear since you cant have full hp to use any heal item and confuse would mean you never get a turn to act so you need turns to use a hp cost move to drain your own hp on purpose. And distress while good cannot be self inflicted. Luckily weird Takoyaki gives fear while only healing 100 unlike every other ailment heal.
You dont need to null light and dark since homunculus work but insta kills remove ailments which creates more rng. So either Archangel with Null Dark or Gurulu with Null Light work here
Does reaper really not use fire/elec/wind/ice? Talk about a design flaw, it would be nice if superbosses could “cheat” and see your resistances to always avoid them
He does. He has heavy variants of every attack in the game. I and a friend datamined his AI and found a flaw with how it works when an ally is feared/confused/distressed. They give a crit rate increase and the reapers AI will try to exploit that by using physical attacks. Thats why I spam Weird Takoyaki to try make Makoto feared on purpose so the reapers AI will mess up. Any turn im not feared has a high chance for instant death. The description and pinned comment go into more detail about mutations and how to manipulate his AI
