    Also is the point load taken as the design load? As normally you'd have to multiply the load by a partial factor (given by EC3) to find the design load.

    It is better to tell whether it is a statically determinate structure or indeterminate structure then you can tell the bounday conditions for statically determinate structures. Your points are ok but for a pinned joint support you should mention the horizontal reaction and how it is going to zero.

    The problem I'm working on has a distance of R1 > R2 = 6m ; R2 > R3 = 3m ; R3 > R4 = 6m

      Hi Artika. R_A is drawn as a vertical upwards reaction. Calculated R_A value is a positive value. That confirms R_A is a vertical upwards reaction and drawn direction of R_A is correct. This is a simply supported beam and the direction of R_A is expected to be vertical upwards. This video might help you understand the concept: th-cam.com/video/6SJiDkYkOLs/w-d-xo.html

      Shawn Drumm I’m not sure whether you can calculate exact figures without knowing the imposed load effects. But certainly the structural failure can be explained.

      Hi Jonathan - External force acting downward (vertical) considered to be positive. This results in upward (vertical) reactions. If the external force was negative then it would result in a hogging moment. Please check out this video about typical sign convention: th-cam.com/video/m9Ecdii47Fk/w-d-xo.html

    How ti identify if its clockwise or anticlockwise??

    • @Eurocoded
      @Eurocoded  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First imagine the point where you are taking moments is the centre point of an analogue clock face and then consider the beam elements to be clock’s hands. Now you should be able to figure out whether the force in question will rotate the beam (i.e. clock's hand) in clockwise direction or anticlockwise direction.
      If it is still not 100% clear to you then please let me know. I will explain in bit more detail.

      @@Eurocoded how to know the appropriate rotation for taking the summation of moments? Is it based on our decision if it is in clockwise or counterclockwise?

    • @Eurocoded
      @Eurocoded  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure I follow your questions. When a structural system is in equilibrium, the summation of moments would be 0. Typically clockwise moments are taken as positive moments and counterclockwise moments are taken as negative moments.
      Check out this video where I talk about clockwise and counterclockwise moments: th-cam.com/video/6SJiDkYkOLs/w-d-xo.html
