Dividing the Year - Solstices, Equinoxes, Cross-Quarters

  • 🌄 This video details the patterns and complexities that arise in dividing the solar year and how ancient people may have set about doing so. This geocentric approach has important applications for archaeoastronomy especially in relation to how changes in orbital configuration have altered the situation over time. The video also looks at the temporal positioning of solstices within the year and compares the modern concept of equinoxes with finding a midpoint in time. Further subdivisions of the year such as cross-quarter days or even 16ths of a year are also discussed.

    Interesting content. I've been marking the shadows on my back porch for a few years trying to figure out a good place to create an analemma to mark the passage of the sun based on shadows from the corners of the rooftops around my backyard. Still haven't quite figured out the best place to create my analemma. This video had a lot of helpful information. Keep up the good work.

      Love it! Creating features to interact with the sun is great fun. ☀ I also have some marks for where the roof shadow strikes at midday over the course of the year. How do you play to outline the analemma when you find the spot?

      @@ArchaeoastronomyDatabase It really depends on where I ultimately place it...a wall or on the pavement. If it wants to be on the pavement, I will use a chisel and dremel tool to make some marks in the concrete...maybe place some glass marbles in the Solstice and Equinox spots. Might use a little paint. Haven't decided yet. Have to find the right spot first, then I'll plan out the design. Been marking the solstice/equinox shadows out for years, but just haven't found the right shadow configuration. It's a slow process, but a fun one. It slows things down when I have to miss a marking day. You only get four chances a year. It'll get done eventually.

      @@c2rail Sounds great! The analemma is very interesting. In the distant past the north/south length would have been slightly greater but the most noticeable effect over time is the asymmetrical layout of the figure changes when the near/far points in the orbit change relative positions with the solstice and equinoxes, and over VERY long periods the eccentricity of the orbit changes the overall amount of asymmetry.

    A very Big Thank you..I have been trying for years to figure out a big standing stone place where i live.No i think i know how to finaly do it.My standing stones are on a 3 km ridge in a north-south alingment..Thank you againg..Cant wait to try this..

      @@ArchaeoastronomyDatabase My place is at 59`44 N 17`56 E I think the first "part" of the ridge is som kind of horizon observation,the standing stones here are on a straight North-South line and the front of the stones are facing west..The standing stones here are ca 32 before it continues with more downhill so to say..Its a very complex geometric standing stone system im trying to figure out so to say../Maria

    ☀One interesting aspect is that although some of the knowledge would be cultural such as the intervals chosen and where to begin and end the year, the actual astronomical observations that are fit into those constructs are constrained by the realities of the sky at those times and places which we can extrapolate and compare to the specifics of theories and evidence. Keep in mind that counting out the same intervals today would yield slightly different declination values as the near/fast point in the orbit changes configuration over time.

      This is Professor Aleaxander Thom is full flow. he was the originator of Archaeoastronomy. He suggested the megalithic yard 2.72 feet was used by the ancient astronomers designing their monuments in the UK and France.

    I love this channel. There is no one esle (??) that tries to explains how observations were made and recorded in order to transmit knowledge to the next generations before writing and being able to count. It seems to me that modern online astronomy tutorials do not mention how we can calculate for example the distance from earth to sun, how to represent the difficult Mars orbit. Nowadays, learning astronomy starts at the black hole level. It is as if biology only discussed T-Rex. Sad.

Even among archaeoastronomers there are few that understand much beyond basic astronomy, and fewer still that understand all the changing parameters that affected the layout of the sky in the past in order to do a whole sky analysis.
