  • An original video essay on the lessons every creative person can gain from watching Stanley Kubrick's debut feature, Fear and Desire.
Do you suffer from a fear of being creative? Experiencing creative burnout? On the brink of creative bankruptcy? Stanley Kubrick is, without doubt, one of the most notable filmmakers in the history of cinema. Kubrick's films range from The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and Dr. Strangelove. It's no debate that Kubrick's filmography has reached wide and far and continues to do to this day. Yet he wasn't always the master behind the camera that we know him as today. Just like every notable creative person to ever exist, Kubrick too had to earn his bones.

I just watched this for the first time and I absolutely loved it. I even gave it a round of applause when it was over. I had no idea it was such a maligned film. Sure, it’s not to the quality of what he will come to do, but I wasn’t expecting a Shining level picture here. And given the budget and the fact that it was his first film, I think it’s pretty damn awesome. I was invested in the journey of these four people the whole way through.
I think people need to realize that Kubrick was a very insecure, sensitive man. He took his work VERY seriously to the point of extreme levels because he was so afraid of being anything other than perfect. That’s why he left the theater and cried when someone laughed during the showing of this film. And that’s exactly why he said it sucks. He can’t take criticism. One person laughed, so now he feels shameful of it. It’s easier to say it’s garbage and disown it than it is to accept the criticism honorably. He let the opinions of others guide him way too much.
The fact is that this is a pretty damn good movie. Kubrick is just extremely sensitive. The guy was a legend, but not the most well adjusted person.

I can’t believe he went through such great efforts to get rid of the film, like we all understand he was young and it was his first film and it’s not even bad to begin with

After a long build up, one of the soldiers goes nuts and kills the girl. Pretty much exactly like HAL in 2001 and Jack in The Shining. Not to mention Pyle in FMJ. The dark/crazy/murderous side of human nature breaks out eventually after a slow burn of the fuse in just about every Kubrick movie. It was practically his way of revealing the human condition!

My take on “Fear and Desire” is that it’s quite accomplished for a debut; it’s pretentious without its pretensions quite being balanced by its creativity; and it addresses several of the themes that preoccupied Kubrick his whole career. In particular, it explores the connection between violence/war and sex, a theme Kubrick would return to often, especially in “Dr. Strangelove” and “Full Metal Jacket.”

I just saw this movie on Wikipedia and I agree with Kubrick that it's very cheap and easy to see how much you have to start somewhere.

What’s crazy is that even before this video, I looked to Dan Harmon and Kubrick as sources of advice when trying to create my work without even realizing it lol great work, you’ve earned a sub my friend!

Fear and Desire is a great movie. I would even call it a masterpiece.
Is it a perfect masterpiece? No, but masterpieces don't have to be.
It has a lot of heart, and a lot of artistic merit. It touches people.
Are there moments with unrealized potential? Yeah, there are.
But even the moments that don't hit the mark - the cacophony -
were Kubrick attempting new things, and that has much worth.
Being critical of your own work is fine, perhaps necessary,
but you also need to be able to love what you produce -
mistakes and deficiencies included. If you do not,
you'll just make people feel dumb for liking your work.
That, as an author, is something you just cannot do.

I appreciate Kubrick's creativity but I was really disappointed in his treatment of Shelly Duvall when filming The Shining. I know what he was trying to do there but it was still uncalled for, assuming it was true.

If Stanley Kubrick would have celebrated this film as a great accomplishment, film critics would agree. This reviewer and many others that criticize this film as somewhat of a failure, do so mostly because Kubrick himself did so. The film was great. It’s obvious the budget was limited and it screams debut film for someone as complicated as Kubrick.
He doesn’t normally spell out the central theme in his films like he did in the beginning of this one. If you keep that central theme in mind throughout the film, that the war in this film isn’t real nor “has been fought or will be. And the enemies who struggle here, do not exist unless we call them into being,” the film is phenomenal! The film is a general illustration of war and the fear, doubt and death that surround the human mind and behavior. The reviewer ignores what makes this film much deeper than just a simple, run of the mill war movie. It’s a horrible review, honestly. I understand Kubrick‘s embarrassment, because compared to his other work it obviously stands out as a more simple film. It is great, nonetheless.
