    I found this demo on a local BBS in early 1993 and was totally blown away. Via the ending screen which you can see at 19:27, I got the number for The Sound Barrier (run by Daredevil who was the leader of Renaissance) and it was the first long distance demoscene BBS I called. I eventually became friends with everyone involved - they were such an inspiration to me and seeing this really pulled me into the scene for good.

    The opening sequence may be the technically simple part of this demo. - But it is so atmospheric that it can be called poetic. It is actually this part I remembered best after 25 years. Thank You for uploading.

    The year I bought my first PC -- a life turning moment. Learning MS-DOS on a whole black CRT screen, playing fantastical games, programming in Turbo C. Those were the days!

    The first Demo I ever set up and got to run back in 1993. This introduced me to the demo scene and in my heart it’s second only to Second Reality by Future Crew, when it comes to nostalgia. This is what got me into the ANSI/Demo scene and led me to starting an ansi/warez bbs. I miss those simpler days, before the internet became widespread and shell accounts were the only way to get there.

    Funny thing... when I first got this demo, I didn't have VGA yet, only EGA, but I did have a sound blaster. But that was fine, because it turned out the demo had no actual video detection - if you ran it on a box with only EGA, it would just play the music with no video. For this demo, that was still worth it!

      I believe that was CDFM - that is, 9 2OP FM channels + 4 sample channels in one module file. It's kind of limiting, though.

    I usually scale the original for youtube by x2 to get a better bitrate ratio for youtube.
    But there is a link to the original video in the description. Just remember to set 70 Hz refresh or it will show stutter on a usual display running at 60 Hz.

      Actually it's just a regular sound blaster. The samples are software mixed plus there adlib FM instruments playing as well. Renaissance were ground breaking for doing that as I don't think any other demo scene coder had bothered with MOD music + Adlib.

    • @MarcusTDM
      @MarcusTDM 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Purrbox Read the description, it’s running using a Sound Galaxy Pro 16 which is Soundblaster compatible. I know the demo well, FM synthesis and samples, worked very well.

    • @styleisaweapon
      @styleisaweapon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can hear the scratchy aliasing of the resampled 8-bit sounds that wouldnt be there on the GUS, which resampled and interpolated at 16-bit. The software mixing they are doing here absolutely did not do any real interpolation (they are doing nearest neighbor) and absolutely is outputting an 8-bit final mix. The magic of the GUS was the 16-bit resampling and linear interpolation... that it was done for free was just icing on the cake.

      Nope. You can be barely mediocre at linear algebra and do it. The differential analysers are fairly simple to write. It's why I'm not mad about demos. There's plenty examples of commercial software with far more complex mathematics.

    I never heard of these "demos" before, I didn't even know it was a thing
    at all. Me, like many others I'm sure, would LOVE if there were a
    channel out there who provided detailed commentary on top of these
    videos, pausing of course to be able to explain what's going on,
    repeating a few seconds etc. I mean, what's even going on? How much time did each one of these require to be made? Did the guys who were involved in it got jobs out of this? There's so much to know!

      @@OpenGL4ever Cool, good to know. That's what pisses me off about what is happening nowadays and this entire "open source" philosophy in the job market (basically a lot of people exploited and taken advantage into providing Highly-Skilled Labor for FREE... a scam basically...)
      In a very recent past, people with such knowledge (or even less, most of the time) would end up hired by companies, startups, etc. We have to stop this modern slavery model before it's too late.
      Because it's not only affecting people's wallets, it's affecting the quality of the software too. I've been noticing more and more games and programs with memory leaks, performance problems, etc etc
