Hey there! One of the dev of Roboquest here. I really enjoyed your video, you explained lots of things really clearly and we can tell you like the game! Thanks a lot for your amazing review! We are so glad that you love the game :)
Bloody brilliant game you made Elliot. Not really my comfort zone yet (like Dead Cells before it) I've become completely obsessed with it, playing it non stop for the past couple of months on Xbox. I especially like that there's multiple difficulty levels - I've got nerve damage in my hands so I tend to play on lower difficulty levels (at least at first. I'm up to hard now 😊) and there's far too many great games that have too much of an initial difficulty that just are off putting (a hearty fuck you to Sekiro). Any plans for DLC/more content? I'd happily pay for more DLC
The shovel is an unlockable starter weapon, really not a weapon that seems very powerful at first glance. Upon learning that you could upgrade it significantly, and very early in a run, I then took it as far as possible, eventually getting my first ever victory with only the shovel. That's how I knew this game truly got the sauce.
What's most amazing about this game is that it not only has like 90 weapons, it has 90 genuinely different weapons. Each and every one feels different even the similar ones, like the Scout Sniper and Shark Sniper might both be bolt-action, just the difference in firing and reload speed makes them feel really different.
I was pleasantly surprised at how hard this game is. When I played through the demo, I beat the first area several times on hard mode and thought, "This game is really fun, but it's kinda easy." I then went on to play it in full, and man, after the first two areas, it picked up big time. I dropped the difficulty down to standard and still haven't beaten the second boss yet
I have never played the demo so I'm not sure how reflective of the full game it is, but yeah the first few stages are significantly easier than what comes after the first boss for sure. The game has also gotten considerably harder over the course of its lifespan, in my opinion, I think for the better, but it's something I've noticed having played at least a bit since early access.
@DumpsterManTV The demo is the entire content of the game that you can access up to the first boss, at which point upon being defeated gives you the victory screen and sends you back. It's probably the best demo I've ever played, because it tells you everything you need to know about it without spoiling the game. (It's also worth noting that the demo is bugged, so when you buy the actual game, it registers your demo victorys as full game victorys and gives you the achievements for them)
Futuristic Roguelike Movement FPS has got to be one of my favorite genres. I've been enjoying get to the orange door recently, so I am excited to get into this game.
Great review of a great game! The only major omission from your talking points was that got-damn soundtrack. I think its right up there with Hotline Miami and DOOM for getting you hyped up and into the gameplay.
Been playing this one for awhile now as well, was super stoked for the 1.0 release. I really feel like this should be more popular than it currently is, so I agree with making more videos on it!
I didn't know anything about Roboquest until I watched this video two weeks ago but I saw there was a free demo so I gave it a try. The demo was literally just the first two levels but I was having so much fun I played it for 3 hours. Now I'm 30 hours into the full game and I never would have known if not for this video and the miracle of the youtube algorithm showing it to me.
The best part is the fact that I started playing it yesterday, played it all night, looked at the clock 5 am I HADNT REALIZED IT EVEN WAS 5, Plus it’s on gamepass, if you don’t know if you wanna buy it
this game is so good, ive tried it recently and just bouncing around an arena with explosive jumps and chaining melee and headstomps feels so satisfying to pull off, cant wait to see where this game goes in the future!
@@Meowerr404 That would be Nightmare Reaper! I thought because I mentioned it in the voiceover at that point I could get away without labeling it, but... I probably shoulda still labeled it for consistency.
Roboquest just feels like a culmination of FPS design, too. To me, it's more of an FPS than a Roguelite. It has the "base" movement of Doom Eternal, not too complicated, fairly simple and basic with good air control, but with enemy projectiles filling the arena, it is imperative you remain calm and maneuver. Not only that, you have free Rocket Jumps, no health needed. It all just feels like years and years of first person shooters have culminated into this gameplay loop, and it is incredible. (Of course, this could be just me since I really am into some videogame history myself)
I’ve played this game since early access and the full release is amazing. At first the game really started to kick my ass but once I learned all the upgrades and how they interact I started having insane runs. I think what makes this game special is you have so many ways to upgrade your character other than like risk of rain for example where you only have items. In this game you have guns, there affixes, perks, items, classes, abilities, passives and so much more and I think that gets rid of a lot of the rng elements this genre usually has.
About that earning topic at the "Balance" section. Sure, you can get basic items easily,by destroying casual enemies in casual areas, but the chances for a proper weapon is pretty low, hence, the game will force you to earn the upgrades and gather enough scraps until you can get way better equipment, more synergy-linked builds and so on.
I think too, even though the odds are low, you *can* luck into a stupidly overpowered weapon but it won't just give you a free win unless you build your perks and items around it. I love that about the game.
@@DumpsterManTV have been playing it for a year also and the power spikes that exist by each major section changes of the game can be *truly* felt. I always had to do emergency sweeps and dashes with the Rogue class,as my RoBro(Coop Player Friend) was usually downed the first second he moved.
If I were to compare this to any roguelike, I'd probably say dead cells. With the numerous paths and the constantly changing/upgrading weapons are both very alike. They both even share some roguelike elements with unlocking newer areas. Obviously with the massive difference being this one is a fps while dead cells is a 2d platformer/hacknslash.
It does have an 'FPS Dead Cells' feel to it mostly in the way progression works and how the basic systems are designed, now I can only hope future updates add more alternate paths, one of my favorite things about Dead Cells
I love roboquest it’s a great game it’s just I can’t get past the fields. I try to use my setup aka hornet bow and the tomahawk do you guys have any new setups I can try???
I played the demo recently and it was JUST what I was looking for honestly! I love robots, I love fps games an the rouge like genera, It's a lota fun and I plan on buying the full game!
Love this game! Nit just my favorite roguelite fps, but one of my favorite roguelites! Absolutely an incredible game with some of the best fps gameplay I’ve ever experienced.
I am neither a super fan of fps games or rougelikes. In fact, I am no good at fps games and I would have a hard time naming 3 rougelikes. That said - this game is stupid fun. If roboquest was around 35 years ago it would have taken all the quarters.
Let me just say, the comment you made at 2:27 ("If you're someone who really loves roguelikes, you might not instantly mesh with RoboQuest.") was right on the mark, at least for me. I love me a good FPS Roguelike (with me having 75+ hours combined between Deadlink and Gunfire Reborn), I couldn't really find a place for RoboQuest within my personal enjoyment scale. I found it enjoyable, yes, and the time I played with it was quite fun, but it didn't really fit in with the other two games that I adore. Now that I've actually watched the video and taken into account what you brought up, I do want to return and try it again, but with the mindset of "It's an FPS, not like the others" instead of my previous mentality of "Ooh, Roguelike. I want to run around and kill things quick" like what I had become accustomed to with GFR and DL.
I actually don't know why you think this is some sort of 'gotcha', I'd love for you to name one of these supposed upcoming massive games that is *anything* like this game, I'll wait.

Shovel gang 😤
I have an idea
man you gotta love a game with a sledgehammer
*teardown noises*
Da wack

I’ve never played a rouge like game before but god damn the mechanics with implementing fps and rouge like games together looks very good.

criminal you didnt mention the soundtrack. EVERY SONG GOES SO HARD. thank you noisecream for your blessings
Didn't think I even needed to say anything when I had it bumpin in the background the entire time... Speaks for itself.
Roboquest and deadlink coming out in the same year is a blessing. 2 really solid fps roguelikes.
Roboquest has such a charming art-style, I especially love the comic book onomatopoeias. BONK!!
Futuristic Roguelike Movement FPS has got to be one of my favorite genres. I've been enjoying get to the orange door recently, so I am excited to get into this game.

I'm hoping to post some edits of my runs on this channel, keep an eye out!
Somehow this game has flown under my radar, and it looks damn fun. Thanks for introducing it to me!

hell yes roboquest! one of the most consistently fun games I've played this year. Great video
Found this a few months back while looking for a crossplatform co-op game, so so good.
Thanks for making this video, picked up the game because of it. I have been loving it for the entire 16 hours I have payed it.

Just beat it on guardian 4 difficulty and man i really hope they add some more to it. The best rogue game ive ever played.
YES! MORE! I WANNA SEE ROBOQUEST SUCCEED! (Fr though, I've been play since the beta so I really want this to get far)
More on the way!
My friend and I got bored one day, picked a random letter in our library, and accidentally found a new favorite roguelite. This game is crazy good!
Love this game. The soundtrack also has mostly bangers
Best review of this game I've seen yet. Great work!
Alright, next challenge video, GoombaStomp%
this game is all ive been playing for the last week. easily my favourite roguelite.

i’ve been looking at this game for a bit and i gotta say, this video sold me
Damn, this game looks fire. Thanks for the recommendation.
now i want you to beat the game at max difficulty, nice video
I'm working on it lol but it'll probably take a bit
This game absolutely slaps fr
less than 10 seconds in to the video and i’ve added the game to my wishlist
guy from thumbnail has literally the *exact* same guns as commando from risk of rain
Funny enough this game also has a 'Commando' it's not the thumbnail guy though, that would be the Guardian
i hate to burst your bubble but a guy wielding dual pistols does not equal commando risk of rain
look at the magazine
I love the game, but the crosshair hanging is terrible if there's a way to turn that off please let me know.

this game is great but multiplayer is riddled with bugs

just beat it for the first time today on standard with elementalist and a legendary shredder!
